Tho vaults of the United States Sub-Treasury
nro snid to exceed in size thoso of the Bank of
England. The strong and burglar-proof manner
in which they have been constructed excites the
admiration of all beholders. There are two of
these immense vaults, one at each cornel - ot tho
Pine street end of tho rotunda. Tho rooms are
perhaps twenty feet long bv llftceu feet wide, and
ten or twelve' leet high. They contaiu no win
dow ; there is hut one door opening into each,
and gas lights aro kept burning inside. The in
ternal appearance of these vaulls has a striking
a
resemblance to a fasldonabie tomb in Greenwood
Cemetery, rows of eases being arranged around
wo feet square,
the sides of the room, cacli about tw
with iron doors attached. There is oue door for
eacli case, and when the apartment has been
tilled with bags ot gold or bundles of greenbacks,
the doors aro closed. Eacli case will contain
half a million of dollars pul up in bags of tlvo
thousand dollars each. When a case is thus
filled, the door is closed and a seal is afllxcd in
the presencu of tho Naval Officer and the Sur
veyor of the Port. It takes one hundred bags to
hold halt a million of dollars. In the first vault
entered, there were seventy-two compartments I
arranged round the room, which formed a tier
somewhat higher than a man’s head.

now THE VAULT IS MADE.
The fioor of the vault rests on thirty feet ol
solid masonry, from the ground up; on the top
of this granite them nro two lent of wrought
iron, and between the iron tfiates a. soace filled
up tvitn onuets. It a rogue should succeed in
boring through the granite aud iron, the moment
his drill touched a bullet that would commence
to revolve, and by the time he had penetrated
it, another hall would drop in its place; in this
way he would soon find that he had an endless
job before him, and the attempt to get into the
vault would have to be abandoned.
The sides and top of the room are composed
of eight feet of granite and two of iron arranged
in tlie same manner ns for the floor. This safe,
as it is called, was invented by Mr. Isaiah Bo

THE DOORS OF THE VAULTS.
There are lour doors to be opened, one after
tho oilier, before we can enter the safe. Each
one of these doors weighs two tons, and contaius
two locks of different patterns. A lever is so
arranged that alter the doors aro closed, tour
large iron bolts arc thrown across tho door-way,
resting in sockets, which have been made in a
pillar of wrought iron. If a thief should succeed
in cutting the hinges of one of these doors, usu
ally considered to be the most vulnerable point,
the door would not drop down from its pluco,
and nothing would be gained. Like the deacon's
celebrated one-horse shay, these doors are made
as strong in one part as uuother, and the hinges
show no signs of weakness, It will take a fear
ful earthquake to shake them down.
CURIOUS LOCKS ON THE VAULTS.
No good idea can be given to the reader of the
locks and their operation, but a few general re
marks may lie of interest. Tho first door 1ms
oneot Dodd’s Eureka locks; there is no key-hole
tor this, and the outside combination wheel ia di
vided into tho letters of the alphabet, the nine
units, and fractions ot figures. The combina
tions which may be made by this arrangement
aro endless, und no ono enn open the lock, shov
ing back the bolts, unless he knows the words,
figures, and fractions which have been used in
locking tlie door. Even if a person was so for
tunate as to get from Mr. Birdsalf tho combina-
u-mj t'l?..ii 1, n.'fuv^ 1 h4'wtt'manipulate it cor
rectly. The second door contains an Isham lock,
which is altogether ditferent from Dodd’s lock.
The third door has L. Gale’s Monitor lock, and
tlie fourth door contains Gale’s double Treasury
locks. From one of these doors, after it has been
Isstened, a portion of the lock is taken off, and
put under lock and key in some secret place.—
Without this it would be useless to attempt to get
into the sate.

INTERIOR OF TUE SECOND VAULT.
The second vault is much larger than tlie first
one described, but just as difficult to get into.—
There are one hundred and twenty cases in tills
room where gold can be put and scaled up. At
tho time we looked into tho vault there were
ninety tons, or forty-five millions of dollars in
gold stored in the room, and twenty millions in
paper. The greenbacks, as they are paid into
tlie Treasury, are put up iu packages of one
thousand hills each, all of tlie same denomina
tion. A package of one dollar bills contains one
thousand dollars ; of five dollar bills, five thou
sand dollars; of five hundred dollar bills, five
hundred thousand dollars. In oue small box we
were shown six small packages, each of which
contained ono million of dollars. Money is
handled in thu treasury building in a wholesale
manner, packing trunks standing about full of it,
large willow baskets on wheels being used to
carry it in, &c. The sight ot it becomes so com
mon that tho clerks employed regard it witli tho
utmost indifference, handling it as they would so
much brown paper.
The vestibule of tlie second vault is called the
lawk vault, aud contains thecanceled obligations
of the United States, a ton or two of paymaster’s
checks. All these hooks and checks are carefully
preserved.

don, of an exploration made by him in 1804, of
the Purus river, one of the great affluents of the [
Amazon. With a small native canoe and a crew j
of Indians, he ascended the river nearly to its |
sources, a distance of one thousand eight hun
dred and sixty-six miles, finding a good depth of
water, qnd no obstacles to navigation lor tlie
greater part ot tlie way. It is peopled only by
a few tribes of Indians each speaking a distinct
language. The banks are formed of alluvial
soil, and aru covered throughout with dense for
ests, rieli in India-rubber trees and other vegeta
ble products of commercial value. The stream,
however, did not lead to the settled districts of
Southern Peru, as had been supposed. The In
dians met with near the sources, had never had
communication with white men or civilized tribes,
and were ignorant nl'the use of iron. In 1805,
Mr. Chandless explored tlie Aquirv, a branch of
the Purus river, iu hopes that it would open a
route to Peru, but was again disappointed. This
stream, like tho Purus, terminated in trackless
torests. He spent nine days in attempting to cut
liis way across the country, but found it impos
