Wheatland, March 23,1807.
Gentlemen—1 have received, with grateful
emotions, your very kind invitation to a public
dinner you propose to give mo, in the city of

ideut. After having administered the most ex
altcd office which the country could bestow, they
deemed it expedient to remain in the retirement
of private life, and whilst holding their own
opinions on the political questions of the day,
they left the public discussion of them to gentle
men, like yourselves, still on the busy theater ol
active life.
If any other reason were required for my self
denial on this occasion, I might refer you to my
advanced age, of which you remind me, by stal
ing that I am now the last survivor of “American
statesmen of the olden time, the only living con
temporary of Webster and Clay, and Benton nnd
Calhoun." In passing, permit me to say, you
might have justly added to these distinguished
names tlmt of Silas Wright. He was a statesman
who, for sound practical wisdom, lor far-seeing
sagacity, and for lucid and convincing argument,
had no superior in the Senato, even nt. tho period
when it was tho greatest deliberative body iu the
world. You have my cordial thanks for your
opinion “that no responsibility for the years ot
blood and sorrow we have endured rests on me,
who l ried, in a moment of terrible exigency, to
do my duty under t he Constitution." Proceed
ing, as this does, from a largo number of my
follow citizens, equal in intelligence, character
and patriotism to any similar number ol gentle
men in tho State, may I uol, with much confi
dence, indulge the hope tlmt you but anticipate
tho general sentiment ol future times ?
Under this impression, and always firmly rely
ing on Divine Providence, I have borne with'a
tranquil and contented spirit all the harsh criti
cisms which have been published on my official
conduct throughout the last unhappy years. As
suming, ns you do, “the immediate future of the
country to lie full of peril,” you ask me “for
words of counsel, of consolation, and, if pos
sible, of hope." Consistently with my sell-im
posed reticence, I may say to you: Adhere
steadily to the Constitution of your country ; ex
ert all your power and influence in disseminat
ing and enforcing its general principles, by menus
of tiie press, public speeches, private conversa
tions, and in every other honorable manner, and
employ the same untiring energy in exposing
and condemning every departure’ from its pre
cepts. Never despair, for tho time will surely
come when these shall triumph and control the
administration of tho Government.
Witli sentiments of grateful respect, I remain |
your much obliged friend.
