The Origin or Gold
[A correspondent of tlio Now V'ork Tribune
writing from Sell Lake City, gives tho following
poem of a young Morntoncos, Miss Sftntb E. Car-
mlchncl. It is one of the boldest flights ot laucy
we have seen for many ft dnj :.|
Tho Fallen lonked on tho world sod sneered;
•*I ran gueaa," ho muttered, “ why Ood to feared.
Fur tho «ro» of mortals «e Bln to ohnn
The midnight hosvon that hoth no atm.
1 will atand on the hlght of tho hills end wait
Where the day goo* oat at tho wrttara gate,
And reaching np to Its crown will tear
Front Ito pinnies o( glory the brighten there;
With the stolen ray I will light the end.
And turn the cyet of the world (tom (loti."
He rtoud on the high! when Ihc eun went down.
He tore one plnme (Win the day'e bright crown •
The proud beam stooped till ho touched Its hrow.
And the print uf his fingers ere on it uow;
And tho blush of Us anger forevermore
Hums red when It paeses the western door.
The broken feather above him whirled,
to flames of torture around him curled.
And he dashed It down on the snowy hlght.
In liroksn dailies ef Quivering tight.
Ah I more then terrible wss the shoe
lock
Where the burning splinters struck wav* and rockt
The green earth shuddered, snd shrank, and paled—
The wave sprang up and the uionnlatn quailed.
Look on the Utils, let tho scars they besr
Measure the pains of the hour's dcspslr.
The Fsllcn wstched while the whirlwind tanned
The pulsing splinters that ploughed the sand;
Snllcn he watched, while tho hissing wavea
bore them away to tho ocean cavrs ;
Sullen he watched, while the shining rills
Throbbed tho' the hearts of the rocky hills ;
Loudlv he laughed, “ la the world not mine ?
Proudly tho links of Its chain shall ahiue;
Lighted with gems obeli lta dungeon be.
Hut the pride ot tta beauty shall kneel to me."
That splintered light In the earth grew cold,
And the diction of mortals hath railed It " Hold."
