LADIES’ PAIR.
This, Thursday evening, May 2d, the Ladles
Fair will terminate with a Full Dress “ Hop," to
which the ladies respectfully invite tho gentle
men of Atlanta.
Admission one dollar. Doors open nt eight
o’clock P. 11. A full band will be in attendance.
By order of Hits W. II. Cntsr,
President.
Miss E. Latimkk, Secretary.
Mrs. HcKeon, Treasurer.
Departure of Cavalry.
One eompauy of the detachment of cavalry,
which reached this city yesterday, has been or
dered to report to Qen. Swayne, at Montgomery.
The remainder, we aro informed, will remain
here as Qen. Pope’s escort.
The Steamer of Fire Company No. 1,
This elegaut new steamer made her debut upon
our streets yesterday. Her rapid journey from
New York necessitated a complete toilet re
arrangement, which the polite gentlemen of the
company were prompt to do in their eagerness
to introduce to the public a maiden of comliness
and beauty so rare. Tastefully wreathed in rose
garlands, the steamer remained in front of the
lmll ot the Ladies’ Fair nil the altcrnoon. We
need not add that she was the cynosure of all
eyes.
Tho Aldermaulc Cane.
There appears to bo considerable rivniry for
the honor incident to the gold-headed cane now
being ballotted for at the Fair. It having been
determined that the votes shall not be counted
until the Fair closes, we are unable to form an
opinion as to the result. Aldermen Gullatt,
Hayden and Cox have, it is believed, thu&iar re
ceived the largest vote, and, unless some other
“Richmond” shall enter tho field, one of them
will bear off the honor, and the cane, also.
Sunday School Plc>Nlc Yesterday.
It was not our pleasure to be of tho happy
throng that went in procession out Washington
street yesterduy, to the grove near Mr. Iiichard-
son'a residence, but learn that the day proved a
most profitable one iu pleasure to all who parti
cipated. The precession of smiling faces em
braced tlie Sunday Schools of Wesley Chapel
and Trinity Church, in the special charge of
their parents and teachers. On reaching tho
grove the usual exercises peculiar to such occa
sions were gone through with, when the cliil-
dre* wero set at liberty to enjoy themselves in
such ways as most pleased their fancy. At one
o'clock, a bountiful collation was sprend by the
parents and teachers, in discussing which the
little ones had a merry time. Tims was cele
brated most appropriately the bright, happy
May-Day by the children ot the above two
riunday Schools. May each return of the festive
occasion find their young hearts as light as they
were on yesterdny.
The Fair-Grand Pillule.
The Fair will close this evening, and as will
be seen by the announcement above, the ladies
have determined that its finale shall consist of a
grand "hop,” at which tho ladles and gentlemen
of Atlanta are earnestly invited to assist. As we
recognize in the proposed tcrpsichorenn diver
tissement not only exercise of a most healthful
character, hut enjoyment in which a large pro
portion of our people delight to indulge, we
trust the attendance will bo large. The utmost
decorum will obtain, and not even the most fas
tidious need invest the occasion with objections
sometimes alleged against public halls, for none
such will exist. Wo would direct special atten
tion to the card of that accomplished lady, Mrs.
Crisp, the President, whose action is authorized
by the ladies now conducting the Fair.
The Kenauaw Excaralon
The speciul train for this delightful allair will
leave tiie general passenger depot nt 8.50 this
morning. We aro intormod that every uoeossary
arrangement has been made to secure a full uica
sure of enjoyment to all the participants, aside
from the rare pleasure peculiar to a day in the
rural regioos. Professor Clark's brass band will
accompany the excursionists, and with tho Joy
ous, ringing laughter of old and young will min
gle the sweetest music.
“Well End” Academy Pentlvnl
The pupils of the above institution of learn
iug will have a floral festival on Friday after
noon, commencing at 4 o'clock, on which occa
siou a “ May Queen" will be crowned. Tlic
citizens of that delightful suburban locality, nil
of whom *8 presume, will be present, will have
a men ue. The interesting exercises will
tak. i the open air, and will be iollowcd
by ui pleasantries incident to May-day fes
tivals. A. 8 o’clock in the evening, the “ Lite
rary Society” of West End will have u social
re union. Wo send hearty greetings to an occa
sion so fraught with interest, and tliauks lor the
kind ipvitation to be present
In this connection, we may not inappropriate
ly add that the above academy, under the dircc
lion or Dr. Brumby, is in a highly prosperous
condition, and in every way supplies the educa
tional demands of the locality In which it is situ
•led.
Tbs Bellevleu School
The second term of lilts school will open on
Monday next, the flth iust. Tho efforts of J.
Hunt, Jr., and J. V. Bradiord, A. M., the propri
etore, to establish a first class school have, we
are pleased to learn, beeu attended witli Hatter
tng success, and they enter upon the second
term with the hope of still furtlier increasing tho
popularity of their institution. Mr. Bradford
will give private instruction iu mathematics nud
the languages, and will form a class In botauy
for young ladies.
An evening class lor young men will be open
rd. Bee notice elsewhere for particulars.
Early Strawberries and Pea*
There were placed upon our sanctum table
yesterday, by an honored gentleman whose mod
esty is such that we withhold his name, two
remarkably fine specimens ot the above delicious
succulents. They were grown iu his own highly
cultivated garden, under the supervision of his
ewn excellent lady, and we perhaps the finest
that this locality has produced thug far. Tho
are lull/ matured, and the strawberries ripe
luscious.

“unanimously chosen” by your Committee to
address the contemplated assemblage ot all your
Sabbatli Schools, and your citizens who may
Iccl sufficiently enlisted in the beuevolent and
noble work, to honor tho speaker with their pre
sence, caunot be otherwise than highly apprecia
ted, and suitably acknowledged.
Although overburdened with professional aud
domestic cares, I cannot consent so far to do vio
lence to my own inclinations—alter your kind
and complimentary appeal—as to decline the
performance of the service which you solicit—
under the prooision that you consent to accept
such a contribution as my laborious and muliti-
plied obligations will allow me to present.
“My life-long interest iu, nud devotion to, the
youth of tlie laud,” to which you have been
pleased to make so touching an allusion, cannot,
at this htle day, he lightly abandoned; and trust

for the service anticipated, I may be expected

mentioned. With high respect and esteem, I
