The new and beautiful steamer of this com
pany, llms formally introduced to the great pub
lic to tho saving of whose property she will
henceforth be devoted, was gorgeously arrayed
in a livery of flowers, and drawn by four splen
did. liny horses from the Wooten stables. Her
beauty and finish were the theme upon every
tongue, ami the gallant hoys bore themselves in
a manner that clearly indicated a full sense of
pride at the coniliucss of their then uain. less
maiden beauty. She is a second class steamer,
ami was manufactured by the Auioskeag Works,
of Manchester, New Hampshire. Her cost, in
cluding appurtenances, was about seven thou
sand dollars.

medical Lecture Yesterday.
As had been announced, the introductory lec
ture to the regular summer course in the Atlanta
Medical Co',lege, was delivered yesterday at tho
City Hall l»y Prof. Ebkn IIii.lykh. Tho lecture
was well received by the class ofstfldents, about 40
in number, wc learn, and the small though nj -
preciativc audience. Prof, llillyer, evidently a
gentleman of much culture, handled Ids subject
ably, reflecting alike credi: upon himself ami the
profession to which lie is attached.
The regular course in the College will continue
from to-day, and it Is believed that tho number
ol students, including those now present and to
come, will lie larger than the most sanguine
triends of the college had imped.for. Success to
it in the “ even tenor ol its way,” ami may great

Last.
This was, beyond question, the grandest exlii-
lion of tlie kind ever witnessed in this city. In
accordance with a programme previously ar
ranged, the several schools moved Ironi their re
spective churches at !ij o’clock, and formed In
grand procession, when tlie head oi the coin lira,
at which was Dr. A. Means, orator for tlie occa
sion, a number ol clergymen, and several gen-
tlemeu of the press, was put in motion for tlie
spacious hull of Mr. Davis, on Hroad street,
where tlie exercises were lo lake place. Tho
throng of children numbered about two thousand,
und considerable time was occupied in seating
them. 8o vast a sea ol human (aces, and nearly
all ot them youug ones, was a spectacle intense
ly interesting. The little folk had looked for
ward to the occasion with unusual interest, and
their happy, smiling faces betokened.how much
they enjoyed tlie pleasant re-union. Tho stage
was occupied liy tlie combined choirs of several
churches, (tlie whole directed by tlie Messrs.
Harinsen,) tlie orator, and a number of gentle
men. Alter a beautiful anthem by tlie choir, a
song, arranged so that all the children could as
sist, was sung, and tho ricli gushes of melody
that weut up from two thousand little throats
can better he imagined than described. There
were alternate songs by the choir and tlie chil
dren, prayer by Ilev.-Air. Brantly, when the ora
tor, Dr. AIbanb, was introduced. His address
was such as can only come from one whose long
and useful life 1ms been largely devoted to tutor
ing the young mind. He was followed by oilier
gentlemen, wlio addressed tlie children in brief
and appropriate remarks, when, alter songs by
the choir and cliildrcn, and benediction by Kev
Air. Wilson, tlie immense auditory retired from
tlie hall.
The entire programme was most successfully
carried out under tlie direction of Messrs. Clan
cy, Whituer, Abbott and Hell, who constituted
the Committee of Arrangements lor tlie eelebra
tion. Such exhibitions have a tendency to
awaken an interest in tlie highly important
matter of Sunday School education, and it is to
be hoped that others will follow,

The Jail.
We believe it has been tlie custom of eacli sue
cessive Grand Jury of Fulton county, to con
demu tlie miserable caricature situated in this
city, and by courtesy known as tlie jail. From
tlie piesenlments contained in our paper of Sun
day morning last, we copy tlie following allu
siou to it. Wo do so hoping that tlie attention
ot the proper officials may lie drawu to the mat-
j ter, and the crying evil, it possible, remedied.—
Head it cveryliody :
Having carefully examined the County Jail, we feel at
a lues for language to express our feelings In regard lo it.
It la certainly a disgrace to any civilized community
nuisance so Intolerable Hint It should uot longer be en
eored, and we therefore recommend that Immediate steps
,be taken, at any reaaonable expenditure of money, to
luve erected a salo aud respectable looking building. As
i additional reason for the ereetlou of a lietter and more
•cure building, we would stalo that the amount paid
from June, ISM, to April, lo()7, Inclusive, for guard. only.
was twenty-six hundred aud sovonty-twu (2,1172) dollars.
We understand this amount has teen paid In county
checks, which checlu do not command par. So it would
uot seem ao very extravagant when wo take into consld-
ration the present depreciation uf the county checks
till, the county Is responsible for the full aniunnt uf tin
fsce of the checks. We do not Ih'.uk there should be any
srtlcular blsme sttached to the officers uf the conuty
•ho have tble matter In charge, fur their object seems
ve been to aecnre the prlsouera rrom escape from what
evidently an Insecure Jsll. But we do think that
he time his arrived when the same officers shuuld sub
lltute a suitable building for the present one, and thus
void the expense of a guard. On the snbject of building
uew Jsll, so far as we are aware, there has lieeu but one
pinion with grand Jurors fur the last three terms of the
operior Court; and whilst we Intend no reflection upon
he county authorities who have this matter In charge,
we do desire to be emphatic In the expression that every
rnse of decency, of humanity, of regard for securlty-of
rlaoners, and economy, demand action, and actinu at

TEST OF THE STEAMER.
A test oi tlio steamer then followed, and as
water was thrown a distance of 272 feet on a
horizontal lino, tlie trial was, of course, entirely
satisfactory. This, so far as ltenrd from, is ahead
of anything of tlio 'kind in tlio Charleston, Sa
vannah or Augusta Fire Departments. A trial
of steamer No. 2, and of Tallulah No. 3, would
hnvo taken place, but the severity of.the rain
was such Hint tlie Chief of the Departtfifcht wns
induced to dismiss the parade, thus cutting short
a very interesting part of tho day’s programme.
After tlie engines had been secured in their rc-
spective houses, Hie members of tlie several com
panies were invited by Fire Company, No. 1, to
repair to a newly erected hall, near tlie corner of
Alabama and Broad streets, where a
SUBSTANTIAL COLLATION
was in readiness for discussion. As guests ol
the genial gentleman of No. 1, and wo must do
them Hie justice to say that they were found en
tirely “at home” as hosts, the Fire Department
mingled together in a social way for an hour or
two most joyously. Firemen, ol all men in tlie
world, thoroughly comprehend the convivial
“situation,” and in this instance there was a
regular carnival of jest and sentiment. The
esprit dn corps maintained among them is one of
their happiest characteristics, and we hope to
meet them on many such occasions.

This little favorite, whose career since site was

six beautiful hordes, tlie two at tlie wheel being
tlie splendid grays belonging to the steamer, anil
lour elegant blacks from tlio stable ol O. H.

privilege of selecting a name for the now stenmer

From Washington street, the parade passed

Tree to Decatur, down Decatur lo Butler, down
Butler to Hunter, up Hunter lo City Hall, where
a trial ol steamers and engine was to take place,
and where an immense number of people lmd
assembled to witness llie spectacle. Tlie intro

Prof. Euen IIillybb, having just concluded
the occasion was made more interesting by the
presence of tlio audience that bail gone to llie
City Hall for the purpose of bearing him.
Tlie various machines were placed in graceful
position on tlie vacant spot in rear of the hall,
and a guar d line of firemen formed around them,
the new steamer, by general courtesy, and from
the peculiarly interesting part site was to play in
