The ladles are reminded that on the 10th Inst
by general understanding, the graves ot Con fed
crate soldiers will be visited and strewn witli
dowers. As the sacred task belongs peculiarly
to woman, it is hoped that in their annual visit
to the cemetery not a grave will be omitted, but
that at least the cheap tribute of a dower will be
thrown upon tlio resting places of those whose
memory will ever remain dear to us.
Wk were aoain the rccipieut, on yesterday,
of strawberry favors, and certainly nothing so
delicious 1ms been placed within our reacli lor a
long while. Wo found in them a complete re
futation of tlio argument made in this “sanc
tum” some days ago that high cultivation de
tracts from the delicate llavor of tlio strawberry.
The sample sent us was from the garden of Mis.
J. I. Whitaker, and were grown under her own
personal supervision. She omittc^ nothing that
could add to their culture, and the result is a very
large and deliciously flavored strawberry. That
excellent lady will please accept our profoundcst
bow in recognition of her remembrance of the
editor’s sanctum.
We leaun that scvcrul altercations look place
yesterday afternoon between tlio police and sol
diers ol the garrison. We believe nothing se
rious resulted therefrom.
Personal,
We were called upon yesterday by U. W.
Button, Esq., editor of the Lynchburg Virgin-
itn, one of tbe spriglilliest of our exchanges.
From him wo learn tlmt the wheat crop along
the line of railwny in Virginia, Tennessee and
Ueorgia looks unusually fine, and if no imtowavd
circumstance retards its growth,’the yield will
be abundant.
■in Itoute.
The Maryland delegation, consisting of about
fourteen gentlemen, nearly nil of them clergy
men, to the Methodist Episcopal Convention,
now in session at Montgomery, passed through
the city yesterday.
Address of Senator Wilson.
It was expected tlmt tlio IIon. Henry Wil
son would reach the city to-day, and address a
meeting, but owing to some railway detention
he will not arrive in Atlanta until Thursday
morning, at 7 o’clock. We learn that arrange
ments have been mnde for him to deliver an ad
dress at 11 o’elock, at tlio City Hall. He will
take Ids departure on tlio same day.

Trade ha* been quite active all thewo8k,_
though, except with ono ot two houses,'there is
not so much of a “ rush ” as is usual at this sea-
s m of the year. It is no easy matter to mako
sains on a falling markot; and, whllo all sound
merchants In tho Interior ffcol compelled now to
replenish their stock, they buy In moderate quan
tities to sliip by express, expecting noxt month
much lower prices. Tho recent fall in cotton Is
a stubborn fact with which our jobbers, manu
laclurers aud commission houses havo to deal
ntnl they seem disposed, most of thorn, to meet
it with proper concessions. Prices muBt inevi
tably go lowor, and no human agency can slop
tho movement. * Those who attempt it will cither
bo ground to powdor or get punished la propor
tion to tho resistance tlioy make. Tho hotter
way by far, for all parties, is to meet tho market
promptly and make tho best of it. The domauil
lor lino goods lias fallen off considerably. Thin
foreign dress fabrics oro selling at a groat sacri
flee, with no prospect whatever ot any improve
ment in pricos. Tho auction rooms arc crowded
with these goods, and tlioy nro soiling at an
average loss of at least twenty-live per cent.—
Tho weather has boon so cold and rainy all tho
season that no one would buy such merchandize,
except in tho most sparing manner.
Brown sheetings and shirtings are beginning to
accumulate in stock, excepting a very few brands,
and prices are lending downward. Sales arc only
made in small loLs to meet immediate wants.—
Bleached goods for best makes still remain very
firm, lo the surprise ot everybody. Most of tho
loading brnnds are sold ahead, and therefore no
early change in prices is anticipated. Less popular
goods are lower, and are pressed on the markot,
the ownors judiciously feeling that nothing will be
gained liy holding on, in the face of a falling cotton
market. Prints ol best spring styles aro Btill in
good demand at linn prices. Some new patterns
arc on exhibition which probably surpass any
thing ever lioforo offered in the market of Amer
ican manufacture. Tlio printing is good and
tiie style quite perfect and Frcncliy. If our
manufacturers continue, to niako improvements
in these goods, we shall soon be able to say good-
by to all foreign prints. Drills are dull of sale
and heavy of price. Stripes and ticks aro also
lower, and aro accumulating in stock. Denims
are weak, and sell only in very small lota. Print
ing cloths arc inactive. No important sales could
now lie made except at lower figures. Corset
jeans are selling to a fair extent, but prices, ex
cept lor very best makes, aro lower. Cotton
lings are less in demand and weak in price, evou
for most desirable brands. Ginghams nro in
steady demand, without much change in price.
Undesirable makes are considerably lower.—
Printed lawns for small lots sell at unchanged
quotations. No large sales could lie modo ex
cept at lower figure*. Job lots are pressed at re
duced prices, but “ buyers are shy.” Musliusde-
laine ol newest styles nro in steudy demand at
firm rates. No very largo lots, however, could
be sold at present quotations. Other grades are
sold at nominal prices. The wholo market is
tending dowuwurd, but just where tho stopping
place is lo be is the question. Borne of the more
lending styles of goods, which hitherto have re
mained Arm, must break soon, if cotton contin
ues to fall, ns it probably will. Our merchants
have eaten their bread buttered on both sides for
some years past, and now they must take the
crust; and they will do it too, without a parti
cle of damage to any questioning outsider.—N.

Atlanta.—A corresponded writing to the
Augusta Unity Press, says ot our city:
V We reached Atlanta in duo lime, but, al
though wo stopped there nearly two hours, I iiad

tainly boro very few traces of having lain in aslies
two years ago. The pulse of business bents high
there, higher than in any other city that I have
visited in the South since tho war. The National

Prior tttreet Opened.
A passage way for vehicles is being made
across tbe tracks near the car shed, thus opening
to travel, without further interruption, that prom
inent thoroughfare, Prior street. Much time
hitherto consumed by vehicles, in making a Hank
movement on the car shed, will heneclorlh he
saved, and the wonder is that the street lias not
been opened long ago.
Cleverly Done.
Tho substantial manner in which Forsyth
street has been graded reflects much credit upon
the city official having in churgosueh matters.—
What was recently an impassible street for ve
hicles is now one of tlio smoothest and hand
somest thoroughfares in the city. Tiro good
work still continues, the "squad" oi Mr. Craw
ford having “filed to the left" on ranching Ala
bama street, and are now in the vicinity oi
Broad. It is to lie hoped that the city’s finances
will soon admit of more such work ns the above
id other localities.
Postal Cabs.—Last week, Mr. Woodward,
special agent of the Post Office Department, was
in tho city with a view to inaugurating the postal
car system upon tlio railroads centering at this
point. The system is very simple. A car is tit
led up specially for the purpose, with all neccs-
sury post office appurtenances. Along the side
of tho car nro apertures for tlio insertion of mail
matter. Into these apertures letters or papers
niuy be pluced up to the time of starting the
train to which the post office car is attached.—
Then, when on tho way, tlio postal agent pro-
ceedsOo assort the contents ot the boxes, and to
arrange the matter for distribution. At each
station on the route letters may be deposited, by
the amended plan, all the work of preparing the
mails being donu in the car. The advantage ol
this arrangement is the gaining of about an hour
in time up to which letters may he mailed, a
consideration which is often of tlio greatest im
portance. An equal gain in tlio time required
lor delivering mail matter is likewise secured.—
Tho arrangement will go into effect ns soou ns
the proper cars can be procured.—Chattanooga
Union.
Mb. Woodwaui) is now in this city, and in
formed us yesterday that his new “postal cnn£
will soon lie pluced upon the several lines of
railway. They are now being manufactured at
the shops of the Western & Atlantic Railroad.—
An excursion with ono of them wilt be made up
tbe road in a few days, when parties curious in
sucb matters will be afforded nn opportunity of
examining into their usefulness.

invitation to our old friend, Manager W. it.
Crisp, and liis estimable wile, to visit this cily
and play an engagement nt one of our theaters.
There was never a time when there was such a
dearth of public amusement, and an established
theater in our midst possesses tills advantage
over strolling exhibitions, that it circulates mo-
pey in tiie community, while tlio other simply
