The illness of Samuel Grubb, Esq., necessi
tates a suspension for the present of the State
Tax Returns for Fulton county.
Thebe was transacted at His Honor’s tribu
nal yesterday about tho usual amount of busi
ness. We believe tho cases were generally un
important.
Grave Decoration*.
A large number of ladies assembled yesterday
afternoon at the cemetery for the purpose of de
corating with flowers, garlands, etc., the graves
of Confederate soldiers. The ceremonies were
opened with prayer and a few appropriate re
marks by tho Rev. Mr. Hornady, when the la
dies asserted themselves to the labor of love.—
The sceno was a most Impressive one, aud the
tribute thus paid to departed valor was pecu
liarly Boleran aud appropriate.
Theater To-Night,
The last performance of the “New Orleans
lavoritea " will take place this evening, un which
occasion will bo produced tho splendid ballet and
tableau spectacle of the Seven Sitteri. This con
cluding entertainment is a compliment to the
Vane sisters.
The Portal Car •yatem—A Pleasant Ex
cursion.
As a prelude to thq introduction of “ postal
cars ” on the Western £ Atlantic Railroad, a
pleasant excursion, as far as Marietta, took place
yesterday afternoon, in which about twenty gen
tlemen of tbo city participated- Tho affair was
gotten up at the instance of Mr. P. H. Wood
ward, special agent ot the Post 6feco Depart
ment, whose cflorts in Georgia to place the most
ample mail facilities within the resell of our
people, liavo been of a most zealous character.
The two elegant cars lu which the excursionists
were seated attracted by their beauly and finish
much attention. They were manufactured at
the wood shop of the Western and Atlantic
fflailroad, and reflect great credit upon all con-
.ctyued Id their make up. We frankly admit
.oursurprise at the ability of that establishment
tto pruduco a specimen of mechanism that will
compare Javorably with the work sent out front
Ybeimnro pretentious shops of the North. The
Interior arrangement embraces every conve
nience necessary to tho transaction of the postal
business for which the cars are intended, and
how invaluable such a feature in the Post Office
Department will prove to commercial circles
anay be tuus explained:
The main object ot the railway, post office
system is to secure tbe avoidance of all delay
while mail matter is in transitu. Under tho old
arrangement It was necessary to make use of
distributing offices, where letters and papers were
detained from twelvo to twenty-four hours. The
work of distribution, where these cars are em-
.ploycd, is performed on wheels, so that however
.close the connections between railroads, all ntailB
•can be dispatched in the right direction with ns
imueb speed nnd certainty os the baggage of
passengers.
For tlM present, the postal car service at the
South will bo confined iojfie roads from Atlanta
to Chattanooga, and from Chattanooga to Mem
phis, as Abe location of these great thoroughfares
will open to the States south of Virginia and
Kentucky all tbe benefit to be derived from the
system. The State Road will distribute for Cen
tral and Bouthern Alabama, Central and South
ern Georgia, aatl Western Florida; and the
Memphis & Charleston rond for Northern and
Western Alnbamn, Southern Tennessee, the
whole ot Mississippi, and portions of Louisiana
and Arkansas. By moans of this great improve
ment, letters wifi pass to and from nearly all
lots in tho Gulf States with as much rapidity
passengers can travel by public conveyance,
nothcr great convenience to our businfts corn-
unity is, that letters can be mailed up to the
oment the car leaves. The locul mails on tbo
tate road will be sent by the nigtit train.
The excursionists, on reaching Marietta, passed
ball hour very pleasantly in that delightful vil
lage, many ot them being invited to the private
residence of M.w. C. Wallace, while others
trolled around Uyt quiet streets. We observed
that our little sister is by no means devoid of vi
tality. but on the contrary exhibits decided evi
dences ot recuperation. The extensive flouring
mills of Messrs. Cook & Cheek, a resuscitation of
ho old « Keaoesaw Mills," aro being rapidly
ed Onward to completion, and iu the course
f ten days will ho in partial operation.—
immense engino of 103 horse power, with
ubular boilers, lias becu placed in position, and
ill prove a propelling power sufficient for wlml
ill doubtless bo the largest establishment of
he kind in tho South. They propose to turn
ut 000 barrels ot flour per day when the pres-
nt wheat crop shall have been gathered. We
observed a corps of VllsauB engaged in the
ion of a now hotel, while other improYc-
ents were visible here and there. We aro cm-
hatic in Iho opinion that Marietta It any-
ing hut the "defunct” town It is gen-
ally represented,- but is destined again to
me, not only a place of much business, bdt
e same popular summer resort it was in former
ears. Tho excursionists returned to the city ot
o’clock, delighted with the pleasant Jaunt, and
ling under many obligations to Messrs. Wal-
i, Peck, Flynn, and Grauibling, of the State
ad, for courtesies shown ihom, and a special
nseof indebtedness to P. II. Woodward, Esq.,
\rhose instance the excursion was gotteu up.
