More Precious llisu Gold
Tho ancient philosopher who hunted in vain
for an honest man would probably have had no
better success If ills soarcli had been lor a con
tented man. Discontent seems to be inherent In
human nature. It is natural fora man no matter
what his circumstances or condition In life, to
strivo for something which lie sees ahead and
which is beyond his Immediate reach. He is
nover satisfied with his lot. There is always
something ahead to draw him forward, and lie

follows tiie magnetj reaching his apparent goal
only to find that, in somo slmpo or oilier, it is
still ahead. Thus, tho man who stands upon
the lower round of tho ladder of fortune, who
has nothing that lie can call ills own with tho
exception of his family, looks forward with eager
expectation to the day when ho shall own a
simple home. Ho thinks it that point were
reached lie would bp contented and happy. But
live that man liis collage, aud lie will soon move
ils aspirations a peg higher, and sigh for some 1
thing a little better. Tlio samo feeling ot rest
lessness .pervades every grade ot society—the
millionaire as well as the laborer who owns
nothing in tlio world.
Hero in Now York are men who count their
wealth by millions. Aro they satisfied or con
tented?, No. Tlioy see the same ignis fatuus
ahead which Oils beloip the mental vision ot tbe
laborer. It is a fact, although few people ap
preciate it, that wealth brings neither content
ment not happiness. The more a man gets the
more lie wants. It is well of course, that nature
has endowed man with tlio quality of acquisi
tiveness, for it is that, chiefly, which stimulates
bis energies and makes him industrious and am
bitious. It is well, too, that every man should
strive to accumulate the means of enjoyment,
for the physical .organism is such that it needs
work in order to prevent a loss of vitality. But
while laboring and striving in a reasonable de
gree to secure additional comforts, it is the great
est ot folly for any man to grlovo about tbe
lowness of his station or tho emptiness of his
purse. And it is worse than folly to envy those
who aro more fortunate, or who by any means
enjoy a greater degreo of prosperity. As a rule,
the man who carries tbe hod in assisting to build
the costly residence is quite as happy ns lie who
will occupy that residence. In fact, we believe
that there is less happiness and more discontent
among the wealthy ttiau amoug tbe poor. Man’s
desire for enjoyments increase quite as fast ns
his menus tor gratifying them, aud hence there
is always a void to till. Every man, whether
rich or poor should school himselt to be content
with his lot. Happiness dwells in cabin9 as well
ns in palaces and he who would he happy must
learn that it is something which gold cannot
buy.—New York Sun.
