Death of Col. Ira Taylor.
The palnfnl tidings of the unfortunate dentil
ol thin gentleman reached the city yestcrdayi
causiug a universal expression of regret. Meagre
particulars only of the sad event have beeu fur
nished us, and we give them as follows: Colonel
Taylor left tho city on Friday last for a brief visit
to tho home of his brother-in-law in Burke
county, at Station No. 10, on tho Central Rail-
rosd. His most intimate friends state that for
some time past it was apparent that feelings of
despondency would come over him which only
could be shaken ofi at the expense of great ef
fort on his part At times, while seated in the
Auditor’s office, his docp dejection would be
such that only an urgent matter of business could
avuil in arousing him. To those who knew him
best this was not singular, for while his warm,
generous heart could bear witli patience the pe
cuniary reverses brought upon him by the late
war, there was that in his noble nature which
could not brook the political ills now overshad
owing our unhappy country. Tho latter is
known ho have exerted a most unfortunate influ
ence upon his mind, hut his wnrmest personal
friends had no thought that he contemplated tho
irttbli act it now becomes our puinlul duty to re
cord. It seems that ho reached his destination
on Huturday last, and so far as was observed his
cooduct exhibited nothing of an unusual charac
ter. On Sunday morning, as stated by our in
formant, lie locked himselt iu a room at his
brother-ln-lhw's house, and putting a loaded
pistol to his head, endqjl the life 4lmt had become
a burden to him. A brief letter was lound on a
table near at band, in which Colonel Taylor gave
as a reason for tho perpetration of self-destruc-
tiop, that ho was sensible of tho (act that his
mind had become greatly Impaired by both per
sona! financial losses and the dark political In
ture of his section and State, and that he pro
ferred death to the mental chaos ho felt was
gradually coming on. Farther than this we
imve not been apprised of tho contents of his
letter. His death was instantaneous.
Col. Taylor was aged about 47 years, and for
more'than a year past had filled the position of
Auditor of the Western & Atlantic Railroad.—
For many years ho was Treasurer of the Macon
A Western Railroad, and was regarded ns a most
efficient officer. He leaves in this city to mourn
his untimely end, a wife and two children, to
whom he was devotedly attached. He was a
gentleman ol lino social qualities, and by his ge
nial manners and high-toned deportment, made
friends of all with whom he came in contact.

Gloucester, Mass., Ang. 1,1856. ED. SEELY.
It Is an admitted fact that tho Mexican Mustang Lini
ment performs more cures in shorter time, on man and
beast, than any article ever discovered. Families, livery
