Atlanta.
The editor of that uprighly hebdomad*1, th*
Ifonroe Advertiser, was recently on a visit to our
large and growing city, and seems to have.beeih
favorably impressed with what he saw and heard,
and tho appearance of things generally. Wo
occupy a little space In quoting the result of his
observations: ■ ■ j
"Ths peoplo of Atlanta are enterprising, and
soon tho city will bo herself again. Business
thoro is much better than we anticipated—as our
political condition and financial troubles have a
tendency to depress all kinds ot trado, am) al
most to annihilate it altogether. The business
men deserve praiso for the improvements—which
are almost magical—thoy have mado since tho
war. Many hnndsotno buildings have been
orcotcd, on tho sites of tho onos destroyed by
fire and shell, and those partially injured, have
been repaired and re-fUrnlshcd, and thus, tho
ruthless ravages of desolating war, have been
outsped and overcome by industry and enter
prise.
Atlanta is the great emporium ot Georgia.—
She stretches her iron arms from tho mountains
to tho seaboard; and from nearly every direc
tion of the compass the iron homo brings its
freighted trains, laden witli all that agriculture
can create, or cowmerco ask for, to this Gate
City of the South—destined to exert, with her
numerous railroads, at no distant day, as much
power, inland, as New York will, with her com
mercial facilities.
‘Her merchants are liberal patrons of the press,
and never make the interests of purchasers a
secondary consideration, hence they are attract
ing the large and lucrative trade ol Monroe and
contiguous counties, which has, in the past,
found an outlet through other channels. Their
prosperity is attributable to this fact, and we
confidently recommend ail in quest ot cheap,
fashionable goods and wares, lo call on thoso
whoso advertisements will be found in our issue
of to-day.”
Wu omitted to state yesterday morning that
Jno. P. Kino had been re-elected President, and
E. W. Cole General Superifitbndent, of the
Georgia Itaihoad.

We had, on yesterday, the pleasure of a visit
from J. H. Christy, Esq., the Editor of that
excellent journal, the Southern Watchman.
Though years have flown since flrst we met, oiiV
friend appears in excellent condition, and is the
same genial gentleman ns in tho days of “lang
syne.” lie represent* peace and quiet in his
bailiwick, and tho crop prospeet never more eu

The Georgia State Lottery.
“ Class li,” of tho " Georgia Slato Lottery
for tlie benefit of the Masonic Orphans’ Home,”
was drawn in this city, on Wednesday morning
last, at the Principal Office on Broad street, in
the prcsenco of its Managers, anti a large and
respectable audience, the drawiilg occupying
about two and a hull hours, from ten o’clock in
tire morning till half-past twelve. Oi course
great interest was manifested by tho large audi
ence in attendance upon tho result, especially
when the large capital prir.es were atinouuced a9
coming trora “Fortune’s Wheel,” that blind
goddess who showers her favors as often upon
those who least expect them, as upon those who,
during life, have basked in her favors. We
were present when the principal Capital Prize
of f50,000 was drawn from tho wheel, and was
much amused at the general expression of the
audience, especially that portion of it, who
‘‘kept hooks," aud who hurriedly and somewhat
excitedly referred with rapidity to tho several
pages thereof. Results, however, nro what our
readers most desire to know, nnd we placo the
principal of these before thorn in tho following:
The capital prize of $50,000 in half ticket was
returned to the managers, the day before the
drawing, by J. M. Sparks, Cedar Town, Georgia.
The other half ticket of tiro $50,000 capital
prize, was returned by J. P. llorback, of Sa
vannah.
The prizo ticket of $10,000 was in the hands of
G, W. I). Cook, Agent, at Macou, Georgia.
The prize ticket of $10,000 was in the hands
of Mrs. General Doles, Agent, at Milledgevilfe
Georgia.
The prize ticket of $5,000 was in tho hands of
C. H. Andrews & Co., Agents, at Greensboro'
Gcorgin.
The prize ticket of $2,500 was in the hands of
<X. B. Harwell, Agent, at Eatonto*, Georgia,
The other prize ticket of $2,500 was in the
Rands of Dr. 8. P. Bower, A gout, nt Thomas
•ville, Georgia.
Whether these last named prize tickets were
disposed of by the agents, previous to the draw
ing, wo did not learn.
A number of other prize tickets, ranging in
amount from $500, $i»5D, $200, and $100, were
sold in different parts of this State.
Thus hath ended tire second drawing of the
Georgia Bute Lottery. Most of the high, and
tli* hiyhest prize tickets, it will be seen, wer
held for sale in Ibis State, and were within the
rcacli of our own people. At Cedar Town, and
Savannah, the enpilul prize tickets of $50,000
went a tagging, oh it were, aud were returned
to the Lottery for luak ol a purchaser. Such
the fickleness oi tho blind goddess, “Fortune,
whom all do worship, whether she showers her
lavors upon us, or withholds tkem. Still she
leaves us hope.
Proceeding* In Milton Comity-Corn lor
the Destitute.
We publish on tho first page of this paper the
proceedings of a meeting held in Milton county
in tins Stutc, setting forth tho destitution that
prevail* among the fanners there, who, in the
absence of relief from somo quarter, must ahan
don tho cultivation of their farms, for want
corn lo feed their families, laborers, and stock
We are advised also that from close inquiry, the
firming population of this prolific couuty w
require six thousand bushels of corn to relieve
them from their present necessities, and until
crop shall lie made. Mr. E. J. Campaud Dr.
IJ. Hnrpe, two of that county’s most reliable
citizens, have llicxeioxe been appointed to go
Weal, in order to obtain, If possible, tho desired
relief. We commend these two gentlemen and
the object of their visit, to our brethren of the
press iu Louisville, St. Louis, and other points
they may visit, trusting they will extend to them
such aid aa may result in their obtaining the
quantity of com the county they represent abso
lutely needs, in order that ths farmers there may
he able to work on, and reap from what they
have already sown. _
Ntrawberrlea—A Compliment.
We have to return opr kindest acknowledg
ment* to our old and highly esteemed friend nt

compliment he had conveyed to us on yesterda),

most delicious strawberries wo have ever seen,
In size superior lo any wo have ever seen iu the

Public Mooting of tho Freedmenof Henry
Couuty.
Puisuant to previous notice, a largo portion of
the freedmen of Henry county met at McDon
ough, on Friday, 10th instant, and at 11 o’clock
assembled in a beautiful grove at the edge of the
town, for tho purpose of hearing addresses from
several persons, whom they hud formally Invited
to ho present on the occasion.
On motion, tho meeting was organized by
culling S. E. Dailey, Esq., lo the Chair; and re
questing James A. Maxwell to act as Secretary.
George M. Nolun, Esq., being called for, pro
ceeded to address the largo concourse of people
for more than an hour, in his usual earnest, and
forcible manner. He stated that ho was presont
at their solicitation, nnd thanked them for their
expressions of confidence; but were he to con
sult his feelings simply ns a private individual,
ho would sliriuk from the respousibility tho occa
sion Imposed. But owing to his position as their
“ Bureau Agent,” he felt that he would prove
r»creant to the duties confided to him, and the
general obligation of his olllee, were he to fail to
respond to their call, aud speak to them plainly,
cordially, honestly, fully, and fearlessly. After
paying a glowing tribute to their past devotion
former masters, and unabated adherence to
their interests even when the whole country
rocked and groaned with civil convulsions, he
begged that they would strive to discharge all
their duties iu their new relation as well as they
did in the old.
To do this successfully, great labor, persever
ance uml honest effort would bo necessary. At
present, their general situalion was “uninformed,
illiterate.” .Mr. Nolan then spoke of their edu
cation generally, and at least in the elementary
branches.
Alter which, lie read the acts of tho Georgia
legislature ns to their legal rights; then spoke
of llie nets of Congress—their political and civil
rights generally. He admonished them, as they
bad been admilled to it, to preserve the purity
of tlie ballot box and look close in tho exercise of
the elective franchise. Hitherto thoy had boen
slaves ia bmly, but let not history ever record
that, by their folly and stupidity, they had be
come slaves in body and in mind. He urged
them to elevate their standard of citizenship,
sense of obligation, morals, and religion, at least
equal to that ot the white. Mr. Nolan clearly
'stabliahed and dwelt upon tlie identification ol
interest of the white and black man of the
South, and urged general chnrity, kindness, and
mutual confidence. He urged them to practico
economy.
In conclusion, ho spoke of tho greatness and
glory of the country—Unit though she had been
lorn by tempest, and distracted by dissensions,
there was life in the old land yet’’—and he
trusted that her progress would be onward and
upward to greater glory and promise, and that
crumbling thrones upon other continents would
arguo and uttest tlie perpetuity of our republican
form of government.
Mr. Nolan’s Bpeech throughout was greeted
with huzzas and shouts of applause, and after
conclusion, three cheers were given him for ills
speech, and lor his general conduct as “ Bureau
Ageut."
The next speaker was Henderson Beck, col
ored, from Orillin, Georgia. He, as did the suc
cessive speaker, stated that the preceding speaker
had so fully "covered tlie ground” that nothing
was left him to say. lie would, however, say a
word in reference to education, &c. ■ The Bpeech
was very appropriate, and well received.
The meeting then adjourned, and tho parties
paid their respects to tlie lengthy dinner table in
"barbecue style." If there was not the gieatest
profusion, it can lie truthfully said that quality
sulliced tor quantity. Alter dinner the meeting
was called to order, and Hubert Smith and George
Pills, colored, from Grifllu, were called to tlie
speaker's stand. Their speeches were timely,
appropriate, and well received. They were at
times truly eloquent, and the advice thoy gave,
IJ acted upon by the people ol Georgia, would
be productive ot incalculable good.
Some of Hie best white citizens of the county
attended the meeting, and general good feeling
prevailed.
Alter lhaiiks tendered to the President and
Secretary, and a motion made for the Secretary
to furnish tlie proceedings of the meeting to the
1 merican Union and Daily Opinion, with the re
quest that other papers friendly to similar meet
ings copy, the meeting adjourned tine die.
