Faintly Grocery and Provision House.
Among the many snug and genteel establish
ments in the Oate City, Is tho house of R. S.
1 Camp & Co., on Peach-Tree street, two or three
doors from Walton. Their stock comprises
most articles in the Family Grocery and Provi

members of the firm make it n very desirable

Wo learn that Messrs, Allen & Ladd, of tho
Whitebait Agency, sold fifteen prizes in the Sup
plemental C&ws, No. 40, drawn on Baturday.
Those who will invest, should patronize the
lncky Whitehall Agency. It is the head
quarters of fortuno—at least wo so hoard a hap
py young man exclaiming, whom we met com
ing from that direction with both hands full of
greenbacks.
Insure I Insure!
In these times of stirring incident, by Are and
flood, land and sea, no sano mind will question
tho prudence ot insuring property. With n rea
sonable amount secured in some of the ster
ling companies of the country, one may retire
from business when the shades of evening are
closiug around, with the comforting ossuranco
that in the event ot a casually, now only too
common, he will not awake in the morning to
find himself afoot and penniless. Such a com
pany is the old .Etna, Hartlord, Connecticut—
the Agent for which is Mr. N. S. Angler, whose
office is o4or Jack’s confectionary, Whitehall
street, Atlanta. See advertisement.
" Chawed.”—Mobile had a good laugh over
tho removal of Mayor Sloss, of Tuscumbia, and
appointment of Cockbnrn, by Gen. Swayne.—
The latter was an original and violent secession

Savannah Hardware Store.
Among the new advertisements which appear
in our columns this morning, is that of Weed &
Cornwell, Nos. 159 and 101, Broughton street,
Savannah. This house is one of the largest and
best established in the country, and dealers from
the interior towns and cities will no doubt find
it to their advantage to turn their attention to it,
when seeking supplies.

Kiel-line’* Southern School Book*.
Prof. Richard Sterling, of Greensboro’, Nortli
Carolina, lias laid npon our table his series of
Southern school hooks, consisting of two Pri
mers, Spelling Book, First,- Second, Third,
Fonrth, and Fifth Readers.
These books were first published iu Greens
boro’, North Carolina, during the lata war, to
supply the necessities of our bcIiooIb, and such
was tho favor with which they were received by
the Southern public, that, having been revised
and materially improved, they are now present
ed in a very attractive form.
Prof. S. has had thirty years’ experience iu the
difficult profession of teaching; and these books
embody the varied practical information gained
by their author in that long period, in a clear and
perspicuous manner.
The progression is easy, and tiio method so
thorough os to leave the pupil no necessity to go
beyond the text for further illustration of the
| subject taught than those in the text itself.
The selections for the more advanced works
I -ado largely taken from the finest productions of
| Southern literateure; and while everything sec-
; tional or recriminative towards uny section of
l our common country, is carefully avoided, the
I tone and character of these pieces arc mainly
j Southern and suggestivo of Southern ideas,
(.thoughts and feelings. Wc regard tills as a
strong point in favor of thoso hooks for South
ern utc. One, at least, of the objects of the an-
fihor seems to be to give our children some just
I appreciation of their own native South—of the
j writings and achievements of her statesmen, her
philosophers, artists, orators and authors.
It is surely time that our children should be
(taught by tesebers identified in interests, princi-
Iplesand sympathies witli our own people, anil
(from books prepared by those who understaud
|our character and the wauts of society as now
constituted. A home school literature is certain
Jy ot the flrat importance. Our strongest and
nost lasting impressions are received in child
(hood, and we cannot be too careful what hooks
shall furnish the mental pabulum of their young
j miuds. We have secu so much in some ot the
(school books hitherto used, false in morals and
eligion, that we have long regarded all such
with suspicion, and desired to see our children
supplied with a pure and more wholesome litem
tore.
We congratulate Southern teachers, that they
|Lave now an opportunity of getting rid of
treading books that contain selections offensive
Ito sectional feeling, and of adopting such as arc
[in themselves equal to the best in any section.—
>Ve look in vain, iu these volumes, for exam
pies of slang, patois, negro or provincial lan
ges, and similar blemishes; all oi which are
so calculated to mislead the young mind as to
vhat is genuine English.
We commend these hooks to our teachers, be-
ause we consider them the best Southern seriej
vc have ever seen. We are glad to learn that
bey are being rapidly introduced into the schools
Virginia, North and South Carolina, and our
f>wn State as far us visited by Professor Sterling,
bese books may be obtained from the publish-
», Owens & Agae, No. 110 William street, New
fork, and B. Sterling* Bon, Greensboro’, Nortli
Carolina. ___
The Church Convention.
We leam through the Montgomery papers
bat tbe Convention of the Methodist Protestant
uhorcb, which has been in session in that city
or several days past, adjourned yesterday. The
i has been most harmonious, and product-
ve of much good feeling and religions inter-
ourse, though the union of the two Methodist
Burches was not consummated. A move in
t direction has been made, however, and it U
obable the churches will be united iu at least
twelve month’s time,
