aed to look at.
HVk learn that the Western & Atlantic Rail-
ad paid into the Treasury Of the State, the

weltirnisbed another evidence ot the admi-

,y safely say that litis great property of the
imfiionwealth was never so judiciously man
ed as now.

St. Philip’s Church.
The congregation ot this church having so in
creased of late, an enlargement of the building
lias been rendered necessary. This will be done
by tho erection of two wings 24 by 27 feet in
size, a corps of artisans being now on the spot
with material for that purpose. The church
will bd otherwise improved both inside and out,
which will add still further to its growing popu
larity. Improvements of this character are of a
peculiarly gratifying character, betokening ns
ihey do an increased heaitliiulness of our moral
mosphcrc. To tho incessant labors of the
lev. Clias. W. Thomas, Rector of SI. Philip’s,
ay be attributed tire interest which now nt-
achcs to that church.
Elegantly Done.
The substantial manner iu which Forsyth,
t nd a part of Alabama street, havo been graded
ttracta general attention. It is by far the finest
id most durable specimen of Btrcet work ever
rformed in this city. A once almost impassa-
street, and one more important to commcr-
lal circles than any other, has been made as
mooth and easy of travel to heavily laden teams
the more favorably loeatod Whitehall street,
o trust tho city may bo able, through its eiff-
ent Street Commissioner, to continue the good
uric.
The Lillie Giant.
This is the name of a watering apparatus
hich tho enterprising banking and mercantile
pulation of Alabama street have put in opera-
ion to keep in subjugation tho dust that, in
brmer years, proved so annoying on that busy
lioroughtare, in tbe dry summer mouths. The
Lillie Giant” is anew machine, and by tbe
iffleient manner in which Us labor is periormed,
dearly entitles itself to tho name it bears. It
regrinates to and fro in a very modest way,
lucceasluily combating the clouds of dust pro
ceed by the incessant travel on that popular
ommcrcial highway. The gallant gentlemen
Alabama street bad another purpose than
ibeir own personal comfort in allaying the dust,
bey are all ladies’ men, and In thus making
tbe )>roiucnade an attractive one will induce the
ir creatures to lend Ihcir t miles to the solid
msincss see nisi peculiar to that locality. The
Little Giant” Is, therefore, a “success," and if
tlier streets we could name hops to enjoy in
le coming summer exemption from dust, and cn.
oyihe presence of lair woman, the liberal spirit
’ Alabama street must be emulated. Tbe two-
id inducement is such that other “ little giants ”
ill spring up. We shall expect to see them.
Testit.—IWIeft Rtary A. H< Gay.
Wo announced many month* ago the purpose
of Miss Gay to visit Toxob for tho purposo of
raising means to complete jhe “HcGavock Ceme
tery," located at Franklin, Term., a spot whereon
was fought one of the most Bangulnary battles
of the lata war. She had labored zealously for
several months In collecting together the remains
of Confederate soldiers lVom all tho Southern
States who fell In that battle, and a plat of
grouud having been donated by Col MoQavock,
a cemetery was arranged under hor own person
al supervision. Liberal contributions in money
had been given to Miss Gay by parties in several
States, but the magnitude of her undertaking re
quired a larger outlay, and rather than the labor
already performed sbould bo lost, and the grand
object of giving propor sepnlture to so great a
number of hor countrymen be abandoned, that
excellent lady resolved to visit in person the Stato
of Texas, and solicit means for a further prose
cution of the self-imposed task. This she thought
might with propriety be done, inasmuch as very
many gallant Texans had yielded up their Uvea
on tho spot where tho cemetery was to be located.
Alone and unaided Miss Gay went to Texas, and
wo were pleased yesterday to greet her. In onr
sanctum on her return from the mission. She
visited and received substantial aid from about
twenty cities and towns In that Stato, and we are
gratified to learn that her collections amount to
nearly four thousand dollars! Sho was warmly
welcomed everywhere, and assisted by commit
tees of citizens in the several places. . Her en
tire expenses on the tour amounted to only
*192 In specie, and $35 in currency, the libe
rality of tho people being such as to very
greatly lessen her expenditures. The several
amouuts obtained at each point were sent directly
on to Colonel 'McGuvock by aomo prominent
citizen,"In order that the donors might have
every assurance that the money would reach its
proper destination. The cemetery will now he
pushed rapidly forward to completion, and to
tho giffed lady—gifted In intellect and a noble
heart—will It remain a monument for tho balance
Of time. She returned to her home In Decatur
yesterday afternoon, where she will remain until
her presence shall become necessary at Franklin,
to superintend the completion of her grand en
terprise. It is due her to state that her labors
have been performed without the hopq.of re
ward,'-mvc that which is priceless—the gratitude
of the widow and orphan, tho resting places of
whose loved oues she will rescue from oblitera
tion. Wo give bolow a brief statement of her

Tho fulled State* Hotel.
This new hotel, a rejuvenation of tho once
popular “Planter's,” over which “mine host”
O’Halloran was wont to preside, having flaunted
its banner to the breeze under the above name,
continues to grow in favor, and when the con
templated additions and improvements shall
havo been made, will constitute one more place
ot entertainment of which Atlanta will have
occasion to feel proud. The proprietors, Messrs.
Whitaker & Sassecn, are no tyros in the busi

present field of action a vast deal of experience
in catering to tho public taste, and energy that
will know no abatement. The new candidate
for public favor will receive a hearty wtlcomo.

The spirit ol improvement hereabouts does not
eem to flag even In tbe dull business season now

rather respectable store house is being torn
own to make room lor an elegant building, soon
be erected. Tbe lflcality Is one door lrom tbe
irner of Whitehall and Hunter streets, and the
provwncnt is lo he pushed forward by Mr.

lie predictions of the Hon. Mr, Kelley, Atlanta
