Book-Bindibt.—In this branch of business wo claim
i to do work as well as It can bo done In Now York. Spe
cimens of our work may bo seen everywhere, both In
Binding and Printing, and we may safely assort that sat
lefaction has been given In every Instance.
Gold Snap,
Our city readers need not be Informed of the
|" cold snap,” as overcoats and shawls have been
i in considerable demand, nnd may be seen upon
' our streets at all hours, but for the benefit of
‘'outside barbarians” we will remark that for
several days tbo genial glow of the grato lias
been found quite attractive at evening. Old
Boreas, too, has been on a regular “ bender,’’
scattering dust, and some other things wo could
mention, about in wild confusion. The littlo
tender flowers look timidly out from their nest
ling places in utter astonishment at the strange
proceeding, while all vegetation doubtless feels
as if it bad been warmed into existence too soon,
Ice cream saloons, soda founts, sherry cobblers
mint juleps, etc., are at a discount.
PIoNIc To-Day.
The Sunday School children of St. Philip’s
Church will visit Marietta to-day, where they
will Join the children of St. James Church, of
that town. We learn that arrangements have
been made for a delightful time among the little
ones, and their freinds, and that all who attend
will spend the day delightfully we have not a
doubt Tho train will leave the city at 8|, and
return at 0 o’clock.
Sllghlly Wounded.
A Irecdman received a flesh wound in ono ot
his legs yesterday at the hands of a Braall white
boy. It appears to have been a business disa
greement, the boy having employed tho negro to
do some kind of work, and when a settlement
was had the difficulty arose. Tho belligerent
youth fired two shots, one of which took efTect
at above.
A. It 8honld Bo.
The troops comprising lliis garrison, both in
fantry and cavalry, are usually a very well be
haved set of fellows, and give our civil authori
ties little occasion lor complaint, but as an evi
dence of the entente eordiale existing between the
latter and the military authorities, wo will state
that when a soldier indulges in too frequent li
bations of “ Robertson county,” or from other
cause, is found (o disturb tho public peace, be is
promptly taken in charge by the police and kept
in durance vile in the “ calaboose ” until sent to
his company. Cases of this character lmve not
been frequent, but in every instance tjlicrc they
have occurred, the officers were prompt to sanc
tion the action of tho police, nnd to ofler assu
rances of their readiness to produce the erring
■soldier at the Mayor’s Court, if bucIi whs re
quired. This is eminently proper, and it gives
us pleasure to note it us an evidence of that lmr-
mony which should everywhere exiBt between
alio civil and tho military.
The munificence or a Stranger.
It is peculiarly gratifying to note so praise
worthy au act of disinterested generosity as that
which came under our notice on yesterday, and
since wo arc satisfied that tho benevolent gentle
man bad no object in view but to alleviate suf
fering, it is proper that full credit should bo
given him. Tho facts are briefly these: Judge
John PEAitsoN.of Danville, Illinois, lms brought
to tills city, at his own exponse, over one thou
sand bushels of corn for distribution to destitute
widows and orphans, every bushel of which is
contributed by himself. Accompanying the corn
is about one hundred dollars worth of clothing,
sent by the benevolent ladies of Danville, to he
disposed of in a similar manner. Jiulgo Pear
son left the city yesterday for Cherokee county,
, -carrying with him three hundred bushels for the
[ more needy of that locality. Ho wus accompn-
; uied by our townsmnn, J. J. Thrasher, Esq.,
who will assist him in the noble work. The re
maining seven hundred bushels of corn, and the
clothing, have been turned over to Rev. II. C.
Hornady, who will make a pro|icr distribution
1 of Judge Pearson’s munificence.
where in fhturo he will bo entirely St the service
of the public'in the above lluo. His ico cream
saloon will be kept open from 6, a. m., untl 11,
p. m., during which timo he will bo prepared to
receive visitors, especially the ladies. Prom his
Bakory—and the name of Henry Spoor is known
to fame in tills city in connection with bread and
cokea—will bo furnished to families, in any quan
tity desired, fresh broad and cakes. He is also
prepared to supply wedding parties, or any other
kind of parties, with all in tho line of nice things
that may be wanted for occasions of that charac
ter. Remember tho location—corner of Hunter
and Broad streets.

There was served up on yesterday morning bo
tween ten and twelve o'clock, at the “Post Of
fice Saloon,” under tho direction of its enter
prising and courteous proprietor, Mu. George
Johnson, to a largo number of Us visitors,
Turtle Soup ot tho moat sumptuous quality—
such as would make a London—nay, on account
of tho nationality of our friond “George," wo
will say, a Dublin alderman, profuse in his ac
knowledgments. We learn that this will not
bo the last of the season, but that "George" has
“more of tho same sort” of marine chelonia from
which to concoct that most delicious beverage,
"Turtle Soup.” For the compliment extended
to this office, tho “Post Office Saloon” has our
kindest acknowledgments. “May the shadow"

been couuectcd with tho Presbyterian church
some forty years.

Quick Work.
Already has the exenvation been commenced
lor the new buildiug of Mr. Ryan,on Whitehall
; street. A substantial building was torn down in
two days, on tho third was begun the work of
tbo pickB and shovels on tho basement, anil in a
few days more, we suppose, will be seen the
foundation of the new edifice. A last age, this.

The Stono Mountain excursionists Imd a de
lightful time yesterday, os we are informed by a
lady who was present. Tiie more nimble tooled
of the party scaled the mountain heights, while
others were content to hall nt the hull-way
house. A lunch was spread at 15 o’clock, ullcr
ill-mussing which, the “light fantastic" was right
merrily tripped to tho strains of excellent music.
New Clatern.
An excavation is being* made near the engine
house ot Fire Company No. 2, for a new cistern.
The idea is an admirable one, as a measure ot
safety, for In that locality is situated much valua
ble property, and the water facilities should he
abundant in tho event of fire. The workmen
were vigorously delving in the old red cly yes
terday, and we suppose the new cistern will be
finished very soon.
Atlanta Tire Department.
The committee lately appointed to revise tiie
Constitution and By-Laws of tho Atlanta Fire-
Department, will havo a meeting this evening at
the engine house ot Fire Company, No. 2. The
growth of tiie department, and the change in
machines from the old hand engines to tiie steam
ers, necessitated a re modeling of the rules and
regulations that formerly were in vogue.
