The tiual arising out of tlio late fire on

had been announced. It Trill transpire on Mon

A •» nook Auction " AffAlr.
The auction sale yesterday of a number ol un
claimed packages in the Southern Express Com
pany, produced considerable merriment A lew
lucky bidders realized something from the blind
venture, but of course the majority were “ taken
in.” For instance, there was a scramble for a
substantial looking packing trunk that run up to
$15, which upon being opened was found tocon
tain a miscellaneous mass of shoio bills / A neat
box, having the appearance of being valuable,
found a large number of bidders, and was eleva
ted as high as $13. Upon opening it, the owner
found himself the fortunate possessor of several
thousand blank amnesty oaths! A similar box,
only much neater in appearance, was wildly
clamored for to the tune of $13, and found to
contain a neatly printed lot of blank Confederate
hospital discharges I A veritable old bachelor,
whoso name w« withhold upon his promise to
reform, was the purchaser of a neat package of
dolls, and several articles of elegantly wrought
baby clothing, for which he paid $10. A few
persons “got their money back” in useful arti
cles, but several parties were very badly “ sold I"
The sale occupied the entire forenoon, and was
conducted by Shackelford & Sons, in front of
their establishment on Alabama street.

office, presents a very threatening appearance.
There is a large fissure in the wall, and a gene
ral crumbling appearance on the Pryor street
front, and they recommend that said wall be ta
ken down without delay. 2d. The wall of Hip.

n?® U«oo of Use I
morninspB Imuq of the ire that occurred at the Warfe
hose of dtfo, B. T. Chapman, vrb caahaUy bbwrved as wo
were present at tho Are, that tho auppreislon of tho
iUmoB, in tome degree, waa attributed to the fact that
the bales of cotton in which the Are orlgiuatod were
bound with tho Arrow Iron Tie. Hlnco thon, our atten*
tion has been callod more particularly to tho anlijcct by
several of our moot experienced cotton merchants aud
planters, and we have gained additional information upon
the utility and efflclency of these simple metallic wrap
pers In the evont of disastrous Ares.
The irou band certainly holds the cotton more cora-
paotly, and gives a bettor shape to the bale, and makes it
more easily handled. It is an efficient substitute for tho
rope, yvhich has been more used, aud can be obtained as
readily, and at as llttlo expense, and more doxteroualy ap
plied in It* purposes of wrapping tho cotton than the
rope. In the event of Are, it is certainly of far greater
advantage, and tends to prevent the extension of the
flumes.
In the instances referred to of Colonel Chapman’s
Warobonee, the bales Ignited wore surrounded by other
bales that were conAned by these Iron bands, which held
the particles of cotton together in almost a solid mass,
and prevented the spreading of the flame or its ascension
to 1 the roof, which saved the building from conflagration.
When cotton bales are confined by ropes, and the ropes
are burnt, tho fabric flies out and admits the air, which
giveB vitality to tho flames; for It la the oxygen in tho
atmosphere that supports combustion, and the elemeuta
ot cotton are themselves combustible matter. It rapidly
spreads Us flames, throwing off large qaa^tities of sparks
and inflamed portions of cotton, which arc waited, from
Its light texture, by the wind, like chafT, in any direction
that It may bo drawn
During a Are which occurred in our seaport city, 8avan
nah, |ast February, out of over one hundred and fifty
bales of cotton that were being consumed, we authorita
tively learn that six bales only were saved from a total
loss, which was attributed to their being enclosed by iron
bands. On tho 30th of April last, at another lire, amid
five hundred bales of cotton, eighty of them only were
rescued; and prominent merchants state the fact that it
was owing to its being bound with iron bands. In this
Instance some of the bales were on Are and burnt only
on the outside.
Wo mention these circumstances because thoy fall un
der our immediate observation, and that planters who
have their cotton in the country, away from insurance of
fices, may consider the snbjcct for their own information
and advantage.
Wo also mention the fact, in connection with the fire
at Colonel Chapman’s, that it was fully thirty minutes af
ter the alarm was given before a stream of water was
thrown on the burning cotton; and it is further believed
that if all the bales had been wrapped with Iron bands
the loss would have been much less.—J/iicon Journal

Cotton.
Tbe superiority of this invention has been ac
knowledged everywhere, as it saves money in
freight, insurance, waste, theit and fire. It also
saves time and labor, and costs no more than the
ordinary rope. Those enterprising merchants,
Pratte, Edwards & Co., on Forsyth street, are
the agents for this city, where we would re
commend parties to call and examine tor them
selves the wonderful merits of the new cotton
hand and tie. See advertisement elsewhere.

Free School at marietta—A Good move,
In calling attention to the communication be
low, we take occasion to say the enterprise is
more than ordinarily praiseworthy, and com
mends Itself strongly to all who feel an interest
ia tho improvement of the poor children who
are unable to, procure even the rudiments of an
education through the usual channels. We can
not speak too highly of the motives of Mr.
Mansfield, and those associated with him in tills
good work, and trust their laudable efforts will
be liberally sustained, and that many similar
schools will lie started in other portions of the
State. In no other way could more good be
done.
We have met with a gentleman from Marietta
since the communication was written, and learn
that the school already numbers somo fifty
pupils.
Marietta, Ga., May 22,18C7.
Dear Brother Whitaker—I propose
open to-morrow, 23d instaDt, the “Marietta Free
School," for the purpose of ottering the facilities
ol education to those white children whose pa
rents or friends cannot supply the means to buy
books and pay tuition. I have found teachers
willing to donate their services for the present.
It is expected that this school will be sustained
entirely by donation. We have no school bouse,
and begin the sesstMl in the church. We shall
supply books to those wboiiave none.
It ia not my intention to make a personal ap
peal to any one for contributions. I simply de-
! to notify the public that such a school Is open
nd that contributions of mouey or clothing sent
me at Marietta, will be devoted to the Interest
f this school; and we shall enlarge its capacity
good in proportion as means are at hand to
the work. There wilt doubtless be forty or
