Several InstancM of fine milch cows being
slaughtered, and the moat exposed for Bale In
thcclljr, havo transpired recently. This Illicit
tralllc Was carried on to a ruinous oxtont last
summer, and our citizens should be apprised of
the fact that it has been again commenced.
There Is an ordltmnco, wo believe, requiring the
hide of slaughtered cattle to accompany the
meat when offered for sale, and If it were rigidly
'orced the practice above referred to may to a
!»t extent be stopped.
Early Cherries.
Our little friend Frank Brown, whose fond
ness for newspapers makes him almost a dally
and welcome visitor to our sanctum, and whose
Intelligence, by the way, 1b very remarkablo In
one ot his tender years, has lain upon our table a
cherry tree branch heavily weighted with that de
licious fhitl It Is the earliest and finest sped
men we havo seen, and was taken from the
highly cultivated garden of his father, the Ex-
Governor.
t The enlargement of St. Philip’s Church
‘ pldly progresses and will soon bo complete.—
le two new wings will add greatly both to its
ppearance and capaciousness, the congregation
aving so much Increased of late as to render the
8 latter absolutely necessary.
A Challenge.
The Gate City Base Ball Club send forth a
challenge to the Base Ball fraternity of Georgia,
to play a single match game for the 11 champion
bat.” The boys are all experts in the healtbfhl
game, and are confident of their ability to retain
the championship which they now claim. Of
course, the challenge will bo accepted by some
one of the clubs in our neighboring cities.
The weather perpetrates so many antics
I this locality that a paragraph on a theme so pro-
f lifle is admissible about every other day. Only
| two or three days ago wo wero called upon, us
I faithful chroniclers of the times, as newspapers
j are wont to say, to make mention of the “cold
I suap,” and to tell how overcoats, shawls, &c.,
I wero in domand. The aspect was emphatically
[wintry, and tho prospect was^hat the coal traffic
fwould be resumed with much of tho vigor
! that characterized it in January last. But
[presto! change! The ice business knocks tho
S pins from under the coal trade, as the warmth
[ of summer comes down upon us with an inten
tly equal to that of July. Tho atmosphere of
f yesterday was delightful, the mountain breezes
‘ were cool, and fragrant with the flowers of the
j, Wildwood, and in the shade there was no cause
i for complaint, but the aim’s rays beanie, upon us
[•with a force almost overpowering to man and
t beast. The sudden transition from cold to heat
was forcibly felt aud remarked upon by all who
wore compelled to meander around town in tho
early specimen of the summer solstice ftirufshed
by “ old Sol.” on ylsterday.
“ Live and Let Live.”
Wo invite attention to the advertisement head
ed as above of Dr. J. W. Price, the proprietor
ot the “ Bellevicu Hotel ” in this city. It will
be seen from it that the Doctor is moved in
theso hard times to “ live and let live," and has
therefore reduced the price of regular board and
transient custom at the “ Bellevieu,” where most
excellent fare, tho best the market affords, and
other excellent accommodations lor his guests
are provided. See the Doctor’s advertisement
for his rate ot charges, and then glvo him a call
Langston, Crane & Hammock havo received

Personal.
We were pleased to receive a call yesterday
from General John B. Gordon, a gentleman
who richly illustrated Georgia valor on many a
hard-fought field in Virginia, during the late
war. The General is now a resident of Bruns
wick, Georgia, where he is engaged in the lum
ber busness. His numerous friends in this city
are proud to welcome him, and we trust his brief
visit may prove agreeable.
Murdered Soldier.
The remains of a soldier bclongiug to this
garrison wero found in tlio vicinity of Lite ceme
tery on Sunday. We learn that it was iudenti-
fied as the body of private Sink, of Company
K, 38d United States Infantry, who liad been
anissing lor several days. By what means, or by
'Whom, deceased came to his death is not knowD.
'The condition Of tho body when it was found
indicated that it had lain there for three or four
■days, and that it had been carried from the com-
■mon highway and deposited in an isolated spot
3n the bushes not far from the cemetery. The
presumption is that the deed was perpetrated for
-purposes of robbery, while deceased was passing
from the city to the barracks, which arc located
juet beyond the cemetery.
Burglary.
A somewhat notorious negro was arrested at
an early hour on Sunday morning while en
deavoring, by means ol an auger, to gain entrance
to the store of Mr. Peel, on Marietta street. He
was making very rapid progress, and if the po
lice bod not interfered, his object would have
been accomplished in a few more minutes. Ho
was taken before Judge Gaulding and properly
disposed of.
The Whitebait Street Fire.
!/ . Tho case in court arising from the above cause
is now In process of investigation. The whole
.of yesterday was consumed in the examination
.of witnesses. Much interest is attached to the
icase, and a large number of persons are in at
tendance. It will be continued to-day.
Mercer University.
Tbe removal of this institution to Atlanta hav
ing become a fixed fact, the President of the in
stitution, ilev. Dr. Tucker, and Rev. D. E. Butler,
President of tho Board of Trustees, are in the
city for the purpose of selecting a site for the
building. A conference yesterday took place
between those gentlemen and a committee from
the City Council. We have not been apprised
of the result of their deliberations. Tho advent
of an institution so time-honored into our city
will be hailed with pleasure by our citizens, who
will give it every encouragement.
Military Directory.
We publish above for tbe convenience ot the
public at large, a complete military directory ol
this military district and post. To persons
having official business with either of the seve
ral military gentlemen attached to headquarters,
the name and location may be obtained by rele-
rfence as above.
An Hoar Profitably Spent.
It was our pleasure and profit on Sunday eve
ning lust to bear one of those polished discourses
which haA added so largely to the popularity
of that finished orator and Christian gentleman,
Rev. W. T. Brantlv, pastor of the Second Bap
tist Church. A simple text from the Bible, Beem-
iugly selected at random, without previous re
flection, afforded him a theme to dwell upon so el
oquently that bis audience were held spell-bound
duriug the hour consumed by him. A brief par-
agraph will not admit of more than a passing al
lusion to the rare excellencies of that sermon.
It was the rich outpourings of a mind deeply
inteut upon pointing out to the longing heart
«he true source of light; and his illustrations of
the transitory and unsatisfactory character ol
Alie pleasures afforded by the world were indeed
, beautiful. Wlthlu our grasp may bo all that
wealth am glvo, together with fame and posi
cUon, but “to ashes upon our lips" will they fall,
Bid he will be thirsty still, like Tantalus, whose
uups are not filled at the great fountain! The dis
course .qf. tbe reverend gentleman was chaste
and elegant—it was eloquent and persuasive—
and abounded in beauties that will linger in the
memory of all who heard it. Wo shall be pain
-frilly mistaken if the seed thus sown, on the
Quiet Sabbath evening to which we refer, fell
upon barren soil, and will yield no return.' ‘
Chattanooga.
'The Union,ot the 21st instaut, says: “Chat
ttnooga must he a hard place. The citizens
were composed of such a hard set ot cusses that
Brownlow bad to send a Metropolitan Police to
take charge of them and attend to the election
of city officers. Finding that wouldn’t do, he
next sent a company of loyal militia to attend to
the election of Stale officers. Finally, last Sat
urday night it became necessary for the United
States army to step in and take care that the
loyal militia and police both didn't break tbe
law. Ain’t we the devil f "
