Special Through Ratos for Wheat.
Special attention is directed to the “ special
ough rates ” on wheat, as embraced in the
vertisement of R. A. Anderson, Esq., agent
Ithis point of the Macon & Western Railroad,
| whom application, or to Capt. G. J. Foreacrc,
r further information should be made.

Imilding is thoroughly re-painted, it will present

map or the City.
Wk learn that Maj. J. F. Cooper, our accom-
ished City Engineer, is now engaged in prepar-
g a coiTcct map of the city of Atlanta. A
fork so much needed at this time could not have
lecn assigned to abler hands, and we shall look
sr its appearance with much interest. We are
alormed that it will be executed in tho very
ilghcst style of the art, and that a sufficient
umber will be issued for all who may want

Iron and Ham*.
W. M. Williams & Bro. have received a large
it of round, square and flat iron and steel, to
liieh the attention of parties in want of such
nicies is directed.
They also have in store, in addition to a gen-
ral stock of produce and groceries, seventeen
rrc»ot choice Sugar-Cured Hams. Sec notice.
"The St. Elina.”
A. F. Burnett & Bro. have opened in connec-
ton with their ice house, at the •* Original John
inith ” corner, an elegant Baloon, where all the
ood things of life may bo had, including lunch
very day at 10J o'clock, when soups will be
ervtd to visitors. Tho well known character of
lie proprietors is a suro guarantee that tlio new
stablishment will be well ordered, and no effort
n their part spared to make it a popular place
( refreshment in the warm summer months,
'ho many friends of Lee Smith will find him at

he tl-xpres* Company PoascaNory War
rant Case.
The decision of Judgo Smith in this case was
Ivcrse to the Express Company, and in favor of
Ir. Champe, at whose Instance tho possessory
-arrant was issued. The Express Company, be-
eving the decision of Judge Smith to be not in
ccordance with law, are determined to appeal
[to the Superior Court rather than yield the point,
though it was stated to us yesterday that there
was a prospect of tho matter being adjusted
without further litigation, Mr. Champo having
received an order from the New York firm which
Innthorizcs the Express Company to refund tho
money and receive in return the package marked
C. O. D.
We recognize in this circumstance a very strong
proof of the careful manner in which the South
ern Express Company guard the interests of their
patrons. Mr. Dunning, as agent of the company,
knew nothing of the merits of the controversy
(so to speak) between Mr. Champe and the New
York firm from whom the goods were ordered.
Mr. Champe was doubtless aggrieved in having
other goods than those he ordered seDt to him.
lie is a reliable gentleman, and not apt to mis
represent matters, hut that was none of the Ex
press Company’s business. They had Iteen in
trusted with a package, and were bound to return
it intact to the owners, or the money in lieu there
of. This they proposed to do by resisting the pos
sessory warrant, and declaring their purpose to
have the matter discussed in the highest court in
Georgia rather than the Interests of their patron
should stiller by a want of fidelity on their part.
Long live the Southern Express Comjtany. They
arc- faithful public servants.

The Mineral Spring.
Workmen are engaged iu putting in a thor
ough state of repair tlio above place, once the
popular resort of invalids, and others, during the
summer months. A scat bouse, designed to af
ford visitors temporary entertainment, will be
erected within a stone’B throw of tho spring. It
will ho furnished in handsome stylo, and made
otherwise attractive in the way of refreshments
such as ico cream, etc. it will be found quite
the idea for parties at morning or evening, to
while away nn hour after the fatiguing walk to
reach the spring. These improvements are be
ing made by Mr. George Johnson, who will have
charge of the premises, and who will bo found
quite attentive to visitors, and especially so to
the ladies.
Of the qualities of the waters we need not speak,
u careful analysis of them by a gentleman of
high scientific attainments, Dr. A. Means, hav
ing already established their pure chalybeate
properties.
Our Country Cousin* I
Business was somewhat enlivened yesterday
by the presence in the city of a liberal represent
ation from the rural regions. Our good country
cousins can spare a day now and then from the
severe labor* ot farm life to bring in their pro
ducts, and to make the few purchases that their
limited means will admit of. All of them speak
hopefully of the coming crop, whilo wheat is
already a fixed fact, and will soon be harvested
For several days the demand for scythe-blades
lias been greal, and tor a brief while there will
be a lively Haying ot the golden crop that is to
make glad households where gaunt famine, once
a stranger, has oi late been a bat too frequent
guest '.
Southern Mutual lusurnnce Company.
The nineteenth annual meeting of the stock
holders of tills reliable and highly respectable
Insurance Company was held in this place on
T uesday of last week. Tho former very efficient
ollleors wero re elected lor the ensuing twelve
mouths, viz:
Hon. Y. L. O. Harris, President.
A, Chare, Ken., Secretary.
Major John Crawford, Book Koepor.
From the annual report it appears that the
company has bceu doing a sate and prosperous
business for the last twelve months.—Athens
Watchman.
This reliable home institution is represented
in this city by Pntiilo & Hancock, insurance
agents, and wo take pleasure in commending it
to parties who have property to insure.
Music and Pantomime.
We learn that it is in contemplation, by a
number ot ladies and gentlemen of this city, to
give at an early day at the Broad Street Theater,
nn entertainment of a musical and pantomimic
character. The affair, and wo may remark that
it premises to be the most unique amateur per
formance ever oflered to an Atlanta public, has
been conceived and placed on loot purely to sub
serve charitable purposes, the entire proceeds to
be given to the destitute. Rehearsals have been
had, and the exhibition will take plnce next
week. We shall probably refer to it again.
P. P. Pease A Co.
The attention of both the city and country
trade is directed to the varied stock of goods
now offering on the most (avorablo of terms at
the above popular Alabama street commission
house. Enjoying as we do a personal acquain
tance with the gentlemen of that firm, it gives
ns pleasure to commend them as entirely trust
worthy in all mercantile transactions. Refer to
tho advertisement for a list of the articles they
now have in store.
A bottle of genuine Clicquot, a sample of the
same used yesterday in christening “Tho St. El
mo,” was sent to our sanctum last night by Bur
nett & Bro., for which those gentlemen will ac
cept our thnnks.
