This gentleman, with his family, reached our
city yesterday, where ho comes to make it his
permanent home. For the present lie remnins

Disbanded.
The splendid band of the 10th U. S. Infantry,
for some time past stationed at Macon, has been
disbanded, the members, or many of them, being
in this city yesterday en route for their homes.
Oar citizeus will remember the delightful music
discoursed by said band on Hie occasion of the
lion piet to Gen. Pope.
To be Removed.
Council, at its meeting on Friday night last,
very properly directed that all wooden awnings
on the side-walks be at once removed.
Prom Honduras.
We learn that Col. E. P. Watkins has arrived
Irorn Honduras, and on yesterday reached Grant-
ville, where lie will remain a day or two before
coming to this city. A gentleman who saw the
Colonel, and talked with him, states that his
health lias improved somewhat, and that he lias
almost entirely recovered his voice. His re
searches in Honduras were of a most extensive
character, penetrating the country, as he did, a
distance of eleven or twelve huudred miles on
horseback. He will be welcomed back to his
home most cordially.
Mr. and Mrs. Goldsmith returned with him,
and are now at Ncwnan.

Hole! Drummers.
We have the highest possible regard for the
feelings and wishes of the several gentlemen who
are at the head of our hotels, but we hope the
City Council will not jpant the petition made by
them at the meeting on Friday night. Hotel
drummers the world over are known to be an
intolerable nuisance to the traveling public, so
much so, in fact, that very many cities, like At
lanta, do not permit it. If the practice of solicit
ing patronage for this or that hotel, upon the ar
rival of loaded passenger trains, could be quietly
and properly conducted, no objection would
exist; and we know of many excellent gentle
men, long attached to hotels in this and other
cities, who would conduct tho system precisely
iu that way. In no instance would they be guilty
ol improprieties, but on the contrary would be of
much service to strangers, and especially to la
dies traveling alone, but abuses would creep into
a system of indiscriminate hotel drumming, and
tvu hope our City Fathers will not rescind the
ordinance which now prevents it. Strangers
visiting the city must be entertained at some one
of our hotels, and if llie gentlemen who offer
rest aud refreshment to the weary traveler will
iustitute a rivalry as to which establishment shnll
lie the most attractive, the wayfaring mau will
certainly find them.
“The Live Drug House.”
This establishment Is all that it claims to be.
ss will he seen by the announcement elsew here.
Its proprietors, Red wine & Fox, evidently com
prebend tho drug “ situation," and are building
up a trade that reflects credit equally upon them
selves and the commerce of the city, in that line
of goods. We would direct the attention of
country dealers to their stock of drugs and medi
cines, and would remark that bills of goods enn
lie put up ou terms that will give sulislaction iu
every instanca
The prescription department is still one of the
most popular in the city, and is kept open both
■fight and day.
The “Arctic Soda Fount" still bubbles aud
sparkles, and is dally thronged by ladies and gen
tlemen in search of its cooling draughts.
The United State* Hotel
This establishment is now fully open for the
accommodation of guests, as will bo scon by the
announcement of the proprietors, Messrs. Whit
aker & Sassccn. The building has been refitted,
rejuvenated, relurnisbed, repainted, at a heavy
expense, and as the rooms are large andoiry, all
guests of Hie hotel will enjoy every comfort.—
The rates tor Irauaicut customers have been
placed at $8 ptr dsy, while equally great ^In
ducements, as to price, will be offered to perma

Furniture—Deo. P. Frazer.
We desire to direct especial attention to the
furniture house of tho above gentleman, located
on Marietta street, in this city. By his adver
tisement elsewhere, it will be seen that tlte stock
now offered for sale is both of a varied and ex
tensive character, and that his prices have been
lowered to suit tho times.
Mr. Frazer is agent lor tlte Georgia Furni
ture Factory, of this city, an establishment now
in successful operation. To this branch of Mr.
Frazer’s business the attention of dealers, and
others, in the ndjoining counties is especially di
rected.
A Good Cigar.
To thoso who smoke, it affords us pleasure to
say that a superior Havana cigar can be procu red
at tho drug establishment of Redwine & Fox,
corner Alabama and Whitehall streets. Gentle
men who arc partial to the weed, can be supplied
with a cigar at that establishment whose fra-,
grance it will bo hard to excel. Wc have tried
and pronounce them super-excellent.
Uleun, Wrlglit Sc Carr.
The extensive warehouse of these gentlemen
was photographed yesterday by Mr. Lane, tlte
artist. A few of their friends were invited to be
present on the occasion, wbicli wus enlivened
by the explosion of several bottles ot the "Widow
Clicquot." Tlte picture will be a handsome
one, lor certainly there is no more imposing mer
cantile edifice iu tlte city.
