County Court.
.bulge Smith organized the regular senli-annu-

learn that a full docket will engage his attention
and that several interesting eases will come up
Inr consideration. Common law cases will he
taken up tills morning.

A 9|>ccial meeting ol tills company will take
place this evening, at 8 o’clock, at the ball of
Mechanic, No. 2. A full attendance is desired.
Pemonal.
We were pleased to meet, a day or two since,
wiih General R. W. Johnson, brother of our
esteemed fellow-citizen, Dr. John M. Johnson,
with whom he was spending a few days, en
mute to Mobile. General Johnson is at present
judge Advocate General on the staff of General
| Thomas. We hid him welcome to the hospitali
ses of the Southern people. Like a true soldier,
with the ccsaalion of hostilities he buried what
ever animosities may have been created by the
war, and feels a lively interest in the prosperity
and happiness of the Southern people.
Weight* and Measure*.
The requirements of the City Council in re
gard to weights and measures were being rigidly
tsamined into yesterday by the Chief Marshal,
L P. Thomas. The labor of making them uni
torm in the various places where traffic is carried
involved considerable trouble, and the dis
closures at several placeB were not altogether
creditable to the proprietors. We would recom
mend them to look sharp.
Firemen and Citizens’ Ball.
A ball will bo given by Mechanic Fire Com
pany, No. 2, at the City Hall, on Thursday even
ing, June 20th. Arrangements are being made
> have it pass off in excellent stylo. Firemen
are requested to appear in uniform.
Fine Onion Specimen.
All onion weighing fifteen ounces, of the
“Yellow Danvers” species, was placed upon our
table yesterday by C. H. Spear, Esq. It was
raised in the gulden of that gentleman from seed
I pluated in September last, and the set put out
early in January. The proprietors of gardens
would do well to make a note of the fact, for
certainly the specimen beforo us is unusually

Ladles’ Shoe Store—Kddleman A Bank*.
These gentlemen have in the past, and nrc
I now adding largely to the commerce ol this city
in the line of shoes, boots, &c. Thoy have built
up a heavy trade for themselves by offering llie
never-failing Inducements of the best of goods
and moderate prices, and the result is, that At
lanta has become an attractive point for country
dealers to purchase their shoes. Other gentle
men have been engaged in the Bamc business in
ibis city, but it is due to Eddlcman & Banks to
say, that they are the most extensive and most
extensively known of any dealers in that par
ticular line of goods.
We desire to direct especial attention to the
mammoth stock they are now offering for sale,
and to their new attractions in the shape of la
dies’, misses’ and children’s shoes. The line
serge Congress Gaiters are the most beautiful
ever brought to this market, and will he sold
cheaply. For particulars refer to the advertise
meat elsewhere.

7b the Intelligencer—I sea from your Suuday
morning’s Issue, that you have seen proper to
advise tho City Fathers not to alter or modify
tlmt portion of tho city ordinance so ns to allow
hotel proprietors, or their agents, to toKcit or ask
passengers to become tholr guests, stating that It
Is “known to bo an Intolerable nuisance the world
over.” Then you aro plonsed to say that we, or
I, aa hotol proprietor, have nBked to become a
public nuisance. In reply, we have neither ask
ed nor do we wish for such a privilege. All wo
want at the hands ol tho City Council, or lata
makers, Is tho same privilege that you, or any
other business man, lias in representing his or
tlielr business. I would refer you to that section
ol tho city ordinance, No. 279, where it says
“that no hotel or boarding houso proprietor, or
his agents, shall ask or solicit, at the general pas
senger depot, any one to go to his or their house,"
under penalty ol being fined one hundred dol
lars and cost of each offense, or thirty days’ im
prisonment in tho calaboose or common jail of
the county, at the discretion of tho court.
Now, sir, I would like to know, if, alter a care
ful reading of tho above ordinance, there is one
man In the whole State that would not see that
my rights, aa a citizen of tho United States aud
of Georgia, have been taken away from me by
this arbitrary city laiof Have I no rights ? Have
I not tho right to represent my goods or business,
by which I make my living ? Do not the Con
stitutions, both Federal and Slate, guarantee this
to every citizen ? Is it unlawful to keep n hotel V
If, in the eyes of the City Council, I become a
nuisance, or disorderly, there is a lato to which I
am amenable. I, Bir, regard this ordinance as
oppressive, and subversive of the principle ol a
free government; and, l think, it comes in direct
conflict with the grand Constitutions, botli
Federal and State. All that I have asked at the
hands of our Honorable Mayor and Council, is
Hint they so alter or modify tho ordinance al
luded to, as to allow me the privilege of asking
or soliciting passengers, in a quiet aud orderly
way, not above an ordinary tone of voice, to be
come my guest. This, 1 think, as a citizen, I
have a right to do; and, as I have said before, il
I, or any one, become disorderly and boisterous
an outraged community have their recourse,
which is the law. Respectfully yours,
Titos. E.Whitakrr.
