liesfo Jtfrlok,
Wo make the following extract from tint fetter
of a gentleman residing In Houston, Texas, to
ills brother in this city. It will bo found em
phatically rich:
" A negro man hud hired himscli to Mr. A.
for $tS per month—and at the expiration of ten
months sued Mr. A. for $150. A. admitted tho
contract as alleged by tho negro, and admitted
that ho (tlie negro) had worked for him tho
length of timo for which tho negro claimed
wages. The cuho was submitted to tho negro
jury, under the charge oi tho court, and to tho
astonishment of all present, they brought iu a
verdict in favor of tho plaintilT for $110. Tho
Judge told them ho did not sco how they could
render sucli a vordict; that tho negro plaintiff
was clearly entitled, tiy tho admission oi Mr. A.,
to $150. A large, dirty, greasy negro juryman
raised up in tho jury box, and with much gravity
informed ids Honor that $11 per month was all
the negro's services were worth; that he knew
tho plaintiff to be a trifling, lar.y scoundrel, and
that the jury would not allow him any more!
0 temporal 0 more*! Tho white man (Mr
A.) of courso has no cause for complaint at tho
vordict But this is a sample of their ideas of
law and facts. God protect me from such juries!
At tho close of tho first week of court in lions'
ton, tho negro jury were paid oil at tho rate of
$2 per day for their services as jurors. And on
tho Monday morning following, when court
opened, the negroes literally beseiged tho court
house to get 'upon the jury. One old crippled
negro stopped the Judge on his way to court and
begged for a place on the jury, urging his crip
pled nnd almost liolplcss condition ns n reason
why lie should be selected ; and further, pro
posed to take tho job of sitting on the jury by
tho year. When the Judge inlormed him that
tlie court would he in session only three or four
weeks, ho seemed to think this was only an art
ful dodge ol liis Honor to avoid closing tlie con
tract, nnd Ingeniously propoted to take the job by
the year at one ilolbir per day ! This is tlie pure
and imdcflled channel through which verdicts
noiv flow."
Ai.l the bar-rooms in Charleston, save those
attached to hotels, are to be closed on and alter
the first of July. This, we learn, was done by
the City Council at the instance of General
Sickles.

Their conduct was otherwise of a most out-

Soundly Thrashed.
A soldier ol the garrison, oi a belligerent turn
mind, entered the Whitehall street branch ice
house ol Burnett & Bro., yesterday afternoon
md attempted to create a disturbance with the
small hoy in attendance there. The keeper of
the saloon next door interfered, and in endeavo-
; to make tlie soldier desist was so violently
abused that lie was compelled to administer a
genteel thrashing to the intruder, who, at tlie
■ inclusion, very stoically retired to the street
pump near by, and washed away tlie “ crimson
life-tide” that flowed in profusion from ids face,
lie then made hid way to camps a wiser and bet
