Tim City CotiNCir, at its meeting on Friday
night last refused to rescind the ordinance which
prohibits hotel porters drumming for palroungc
at Ihe general passenger depot, upon the arrival
nt trains.
Ai.t. wooden a winds now in u so in the city
will he allowed to remain until the first of Octo
ber, after which the owners will he required to
remove them. This was the decision of Coun
cil at the meeting on Friday night last.
Jlllitnry Court martini.
A military court martial is now being held in
ibis city, in the Willingham building. It takes
ciignizanco of cases anywhere in the Third Mil
itary District. Among others,we learn that two
officers from Mobile are now here, and will be
tried.
Revolt at tile Penitentiary.
The Macon Telegraph, ol yesterday, says pas
sengers from Millcdgeville report that some
thirty or forty convicts, white and black, made
an attempt to escape from the Penitentiary ou
Thursday. They were fired into by the guard,
and several killed and wounded. Most of the
party were re-captured. We hare no further
particulars.
REGISTRATION.
It is die patriotic duty of all white male resi-
dentsof the First Ward who are not disqualified,
to go to the City Hall to-morrow and enroll their
names upon the registration books. Failure to
do so involves a loss of the right to vote, and as
every adult male negro in that Ward will cer
tainly go forward and register, it remains for
the white population to place themselves, if pos
sible, in a position to maintain tbe supremacy at
die ballot box.
11 Cnmalln.”
The elegant steam fire engine, “ Castalia," the
special admiration and pet of Fire Company
No. 1, was engaged last week in pumping out
die rock quarry of Pat Lynch, which was inun
dated by die late rains. The job was completed
about 10 o'clock on Friday night, for which the
company was paid the sum of .$100. Quite a
nice little item for the treasury of “ Castalia,”
and one that speaks well for her industry.
Literary Addrcna.
it is nunounced that Rev. W. P. Harrison,
Pastor of Wesley Chapel, in this city, will de
liver the literary address at the approaching
commencement of the Montgomery Female In
stitute, at Laflrange. No better selection could
Imvc been made. Being otic of the finest schol
ars, and perhaps the best linguist in the South,
’Mr. Harrison is also an eloquent and instructive
speaker, and lias a tact for imparting information
which very lew men possess. Without a doubt,
lie will make a superb address.
«
DON’T NEGLECT IT !
The Board of Registration will open their
hooks lor the First Ward at the City Hall to
morrow morning, at 8 o'clock. The importance
ol registration cannot be over-estimated, when
we state that a failure to do so disfranchises the
individual. Let every man clothe himself witli
the power to vote, and then quietly bide his time.
It does not require much sagacity to see how our
future elections will go if onr white male popu
lation are indiflercut to the important duty now
devolving upon them.
Mercer IlnlverMlty.
'The commencement exercises of Mercer Uni
versity, at Penfield, will commence on Sunday,
the 7th of July, with the commencement sermon.
«>n Monday, the 8th, the Sophomores will de
claim; Tuesday the Juniors will speak; and on
Wednesday the graduates will deliver their ora
tions. We nro glad to learn that the Institution,
under its energetic President, Rov. II. II. Tucker,
is in a flourishing condition.
The address before the literary societies of the
I'niversity will be delivered by the Rev. S. G.
Ililiyer, and an original poem before the same
will lie read by our townsman, A. R. Watson,
Ksq., literary editor of the Ladiei Home. We
learn that a number of persons from this city
will be in attendance.
_————
GO AND REGISTER!
Evils and perils too alarming to contemplate
menace us, if our people do not arouse them
selves to tlie importance of registration. Many
of our best men are fettered by apathy and slug
gishness, which must be shaken off. The issuo
must be met, aud it may be fuirly and squarely
done by going to tbe City Ilall to-morrow and
registering. The books for the First Ward will
be opened at 8 o'clock.
Tlie Georgia Slate Lottery'.
Under the loregoing heading, our young friend
Mr. Gus. A. Boyd advertises in this paper
dint lie has opened an office on Whitehall street,
Markham’s Building, for tlie sale of tickets in all
the schemes of that home institution, the "Georgia
State Lottery," for tlie benefit of the Masonic
Orphan’s Home. In calling tlie attention of our
readers to this advertisement of our young iriend,
we have also to notice that tlie Managers of this
htate Lottery have determined to push it forward
m order to carry out, as speedily as practicable,
•be benevolent object of tbe legislative act which
authorizes its drawing. Hence, in addition to
•be monthly scheme on the “ Havana Plan ” nnd
flic daily "Supplemental," daily “Combination
Lotteries" will henceforth be drawn, the capital
prize being $5,000, aud the price ot tickets only
$1- The first drawing of this last named scheme
will take place on to-morrow. To persons at a
distance who may desire to purchase tickets in
any of the schemes of this “Georgia State Lot
tery," we give this assurance, that there is no bo-
no frond about it—that its Managers are
gentlemen of tlie highest respectability ami re
"pntikihUUy, no one of whom could he tempted
with gold to connect himself with any fraudulent
•a bogus enterprise. The tickets in all the schemes
arc sold at their rated prices, tlie drawings su
perintended by sworn managers, and tlie priz-cs
promptly paid. This is all that can be required
“I any lottery, and that the “ Georgia State Lot-
*ery " does this, there is no need to ascurc our
own citizens, and we idler the assurance only to
iiiqairt confidence in it at a distance.

UrUectlon* on Spring.
«T M KLODTA.
[There Is a gayoty shout tho Spring with which I have
nn sympathy; Its perpetual revival of tear and bloom la
too great n contrast to the Inner world, where so many
fueling, lie barren, amt so many hopes withered.1
The glad, tho Joyous Spring Is hero,
With sunshino, birds and (tow’rs;
Tho vine, that Into wero bare and sear,
Are changed to leafy bowTs.
Alt nature acomoth bright aud gay.
Merrily glides tho brook,
Tho glad, tho boamlng sun’s warm ray,
Rhinos ovor crag and nook.
Tho mock-bird atngcth all tho day.
From tree-top and from how’r;
Ala. t tho music of Ida lay,
llae lust Its soothing pow’r.
Nor Spring, nor bird, nor flower, ro.e,
Again can cheer my heart;
Oli I life, to others bright and fair,
To me how drear thou art.
I wander out while yet the air
la fre.li with breath of morn,
Aud Btrlvo to drive away dull care.
Yet cannot. I’m forlorn.
I cull the rnro.t flow’r that blowB,
With which to dock my hair,
Ala. I tho brightness of the rote
But mocks at my dospr.ir.
Then from my flowing locks I tear,
The symbol gay and bright,
I cannot wear It In my hair,
It pall, upon iny Bight.
Rather tho cypress, gtoomy, dark,
Should, ronnd my brow entwine,
An emblom lit with which to mark
A heart »o lone a. mine.
Ala. 1 for me tlicro la no Spring,
Sly hope, all withored lie;
Flowers may bloom and birds may .lug,
But I must ever sigh—
Sigh for the happiness that’s fled—
For JoyB that come not back—
For feelings, pleasures, long since dead,
And scatter'd o'er life’s track.
Sweet Spring t I take no part in thee;
The long, long dayB seem sad,
’ Tie winter qf the heart with me,
When thou mak'st others glad.
