An Kxcellent male and Female Academy.
We iuvitc tho attention ol parents and guard!
ans in this vicinity, and even at a distance, to
the advertisement of tho Board of Trustees of
the Male and Female Academy at Decatur,
which appears in this morning’s issue. Decatur
is about six miles from Atlanta, and is one of
the most healthy and orderly towns in our State.
There is no point more suitable for academic
purposes than Decatur, nud no instructors more
competent than the Principal and Assistants of
the Academy located thcro. We cannot com
mend the institution too highly, nud have no
doubt that it will receive tho patronage it richly
merits. The terms of tuition arc as low and as
accommodating as can be expected. See the
advertisement ot the Trustees,
A Compliment to tlio “ Intelligencer,”
We are in receipt of a compliment to the Intel-
i.iQENCKit, from the gentlemanly proprietors of
the “ Gato City Garden ’’—Mr. Lewis Lawsiie
and Dr. O. J. Register—which is highly appre
ciated, aud for which wc return grateful ac
knowledgments. Tho compliment consists of a
large bnsket filled with a variety of the finest
vegetables we have seen during tho season,
grown by these enterprising gentlemen at their
garden within the corporate limits of the city,
near to the race track on the Green’s Ferry road.
From this garden, which embraces some twelve
or fourteen acres of ground in the highest state
of cultivation, the new market at tho corner of
Prior and Mitchell streets is daily supplied with
vegetables of tho rarest and choicest description
freshly gathered and fit for even epicures. On
yesterday evening it supplied tlint market with
over two hundred head of cabbages of largo size,
besides a great variety of other seasonable vege
table productions "too tedious to enumerate,” as
advertisers of wares and merchandise often say,
mid which woro disposed of, we take pleasure in
saying, not at extortionate, but nt very reasona
ble prices, bringing them within tho reach of the
poor as well as the rich. This “ Gate City Gar
den” is one of the most valuable institutions ol
our city. As a horticulturist few are the equals
of Dr. Register, under whose special attention
this gardeu is cultivated. In fact, tho two men
combined—Dr. Register nnd Mr. Lewis Lawshe
—are men who know " no such word as fail ” in
their horticultural enterprises, evidence of which
may be seen every morning in market, as well
as at their garden on all occasions. Atlanta is
greatly indebted to these gentlemen for their on
icrprise. We trust they will be richly rewarded
for it.
Mr. Lawshe informs us that he will soon he
ready to supply our citizens witli choice and
luscious grapes, the product also ol the “ Gate
City Garden.” We will bo ready lor them when
they come; as the grape is not only a delicious,
hut a healthy fruit.
Mr. J. B. Cunningham, an old and highly
respected citizen of Griffin, died suddenly in
that place on Thursday. He was sitting in a
chair reading a paper, when his head suddenly
fell to one side, and ho expired immediately
without a groan.
L. S. Eiierhart, Superintendent of Educa
tion, etc., has not left for Europe, as was an
nounced in tho Macon pajiers a few days ago.
So tlie tears of regret shed by the people of that
locality were really without cause.
Allen & Laud have during tho week ending
yesterday, sold and cashed prizes amounting to
withih a fraction of three thousand dollars. It
is current on the streets that parties who invest
at their Agency rarely draw blanks.
The Coiulitutionalut reports registration at
Augusta on Tuesday as follows: 218 whites and
182 colored were registered—total 400. Up to
late 813 whites and 1,228 colored have register
ed, making a total of 2,080.
The Madison Netei says tho registration in
Morgan county, up to the 20th, stunds in the
proportion of two whites to fivo colored.
