eminently proper one, and that it will he cheer

Another Outraao on tko Suburb*.
An outrage of a most aggravated character
was perpetrated atioul t) o'clock, on Monday
evening, at the “blue store" of Mr. Gwinn, at
the extreme end ol Peachtree street. A stalwart
negro man entered the store in a quiet manner,
and alter remaining a few momenta as if exam
ining the goods with a view to purchase, in
dicted several severe blows upon the head of the
negro boy iu attendance at the counter, pros
trating him to the tloor. This was done at a
moment when the boy’s hack was turned to him
The proprietor, Mr. Gwinn, observing this trans
action, made ail effort to reach his pistol, which
was in a drawer near at hand, hut was so vio
lently assaulted liy the same negro that lie was
unable to get possession ot it. The two, negre
boy and proprietor, thus seuseless on the tloor,
the loose money in the change drawer was
abstracted hy the scoundrel, and the per
son ot Mr. Gwiun searched for more.—
The sum ot $10 or $50 was obtained betore the
negro was compelled, by the alarm which was
raised, to make his escape. A roll ot money
amounting to $100 in another drawer was not
disturbed. The weapon used by the negro was
an iron bar, and the wounds received by Mr.
Gwinn and bis boy were o! a severe though not
dangerous character. The negro is well known
in that locality as Austin l.uckic, and bails from
Columbus, though for some time past be lias
been living out on the above named street.
Medical attention was promptly furnished by
Prs. Alexander & Orrne, and we learn tlmt the
condition ot the assaulted parties gives hope of
their early recovery.
Four arrests ol negroes in tlmt neighborhood
were made on yesterday by Lieut. Tim. Mur
pby, of the police, and are now confined in the
calaboose. They are believed to have some
knowledge of ttie transaction. The negro Ail
stin Luckie is yet at large.
Court of Ordinary—July Term.
JIKFORK JODUE PITTMAN.
An interesting case lias been under considera
tion in this court for several days. A caveat was
entered to the will of Mrs. Mary Green upon the
grounds that the testatrix labored under the im
pression that her son Joseph Green, then in
Knglaud, was dead; also, upon the ground
insanity and uncertainty. There have been ex
amined several witnesses, which consumed the
whole of Monday and part of yesterday. The
case Will be resumed this morning at 8 o’clock
Messrs. Tidwell & Fears and A. W. Hammond
representing the caveators, and Messrs. Bleckley
and R. J. Cowart, the other side. It is expected
that the Anal argument will he lmd between the
counsel this morning.
Whitehall .Street.
There are three uew business houses now un
der headway on this popular street, one of which,
Mr. Ryan’s, rapidly approaches completion. The
basement ol Mr. Lawsho’s was commenced on
Monday, while on yesterday a corps of workmen
were enguged in removing the debris from the
old drug stand of Massey & Ilerty, which was
destroyed hy lire last year. These tliroo pro
jected buildings aro to be elegant ones, and will
prove fit ornaments to the fashionable locality
on which they will he placed. We make note
nl these facts as an evidence of the improve
ments now going on in this city. Other evidences
ol prosperity in the way of new buildings ate
all around us, notwithstanding there is a clamor
about tlio scarcity of money everywhere, and
oilier places ure standing comparatively still.
Attempt at Holtlicry.
There was an attempt at robbery about 11
o’clock, on Monday night, at the store a few
doors below the old Masonic Hall building, on
Decatur street, There was produced some sen
sation, hut the plan was frustrated, nnd no dam
age done.

A largo and enthusiastic meeting or our fel
low citizens of tho Republican party, throc-
' iiirlhs of whom were gentlemen of African de
scent, took plneo at tho City Hall last night.—
I pon motion, Col. Farrow was called to tho
■hair, and W. 8. Uasslord, Esq, requested to net
as Hecrelary. Tho chairman in a few brief
remarks, stated that tho objcctnf tho assemblage
was to np|>oint delegates to represent Fulton police officer,
county in tho Republican Muss Meeting to ho
held in this city on to-morrow; whouby motion,
it was mndo tho duty ol the chairman to appoint
a conimittco ol tour to select suitublo persons for
delegates. Tho chairman announced tho bil
lowing gentlemen, who retired to dischnrgo the
duty assigned to thorn: Win. Markham, Esq.,
Mr. Green, Col. Spaulding and Andrew Jack-
son, Esq. Alter the conimittco lmd retired to
another room, Robert Ynuccy, Esq., aroso and
invited tho Rev. Mr. Turner to lavor the meeting
with a speech, when that gentleman was voci
leronsly called for. Mr. Turner slated that 1m
was taken unawares, and not being prepared to
make a Speech, begged to be excused, hut hoped
tlmt his friend, Mr. Simms, who was just from
Boston, and doubtless lmd something fresh to
say, would address the meeting; whereupon the
gentleman Irom Massachusetts was loudly called
lor.
Mr. Simms felt a due sense of pride, he said,
at the compliment paid him, but objected to the
manner in which his brother Turner wna dis
posed to "dodge the question,” and insisted tlmt
lie (Mr. T.) should first be heard from. Upon
the lnllcr'gentleman iigaiu being called for, head
vanced to a position in front of the Chair and
addressed the meeting in a briel and eloquent
manner, being frequently and loudly applauded
At the conclusion of the address, tho committee
returned nnd reported the names of ten persons
as delegates to represent Fulton county in the
Fourth ot July Mass Meeting of the Republican
parly of Georgia. We regret our inability to
ive the names of the ten delegates, our memory
failing us at this writing. They were, wo lie
lieve, about equally divided between colored and
white gentlemen. The selection was entirely
satisfactory to tho meeting, save that it was
deemed proper to add two more names, which
was done by proposing arid accepting W. H
Watson, Esq., and Austin Wright, making twelve
delegates in all.
Mr. Simms, from Boston, was again called for
loudly, and responded in a speech ot some length.
This gentleman's style of oratory was of a highly
pleasing character, replete as it was with happy
illustrations and humorous anecdotes!
The next motion was (or the appointment o
mi Executive Committee lor Fulton county,
which was objected to hy Capl. McBarrou Tim
money, who stated that a committee of that
character was already in existence, of which h
was chairman. Here some discussion ensued
which was participated iu by William Markham
Esq., Colonel Spaulding, the Rev. Mr. Turner,
and Cuptniu Timmoncy, the latter gentleman
stating that tho Executive Committee of which
he was chairman was appointed hy the League,
and tlmt the authority was derived Irom some
organization at Washington City. Mr. Murk
ham stated that the committee to which the gen
tlenmn referred might he a very proper one, and
doubtless was, hut tlmt this meeting lmd nothing
to do with Leagues, if indeed, such things existed
at all, and it was fit that this meeting should np
point one of its own choice. Mr. Turner hoped
that the committee would be appointed, and iu
a somewhat omphalic speech gave the motion
his zealous support. The discussion concluded
by overruling the objection ol Cnpt. McBarrou
Timmoncy, when a committee appointed hy the
chairman retired for the purpose of making a
selection. Alter a few moments’ absence they
returned nnd reported the following gentlemen
as the Executive Committee ot Fulton county
IV. S. Uasslord, Esq., C. P. Cassin, Esq., Dr
Badger and W. 11. Watson, Esq. We are not
entirely certain that we report this commute
entirely correct, as wo have to rely wholly upon
our memory of the names ns the Secretary read
them out.
The Rev. Wesley Pretty man then invited the
chairman to lavor the meeting with some of
his counsel, when Colonel Farrow, in liis usual
(ulicitous style, promptly responded, remarking,
however, that his physical condition was such
tlmt he would not ho able to do justice to the
occasion, but felt it to ho his dHty to say some
thing. Our engagements were such that w
could not hear tho gentleman through, and are
therefor denied the pleasure of milking a further
reference to his speech. We regret being able
to givo a synopsis only of un onfasion so lute
eating!
