Thews was anothkh grand ball at “ Liberty
Hall” on Tuesday evening, nud the pleasures of
the occasion were not marred by any untoward
occurrence until the close, when two enamored
swains got into a dispute ns to which of them
had the right to escort one of the ebon demoi
selles in attendance to her home. The ditlcrencc
of opinion on a nice point of etiquette drew the
two into a warm discussion, the discussion drew
them into blows, when the police interfered and
drew them into the calaboose, which stands
quite near “ Liberty Hall.” The damsel is said
to have complacently witnessed the passago at
arms between her two Cavaliers, and at its con
clusion disappeared in the darkucss unattended.
His Honor, we suppose, will adjust the matter
tor them on Friday next.

Atlanta nn Another Neon It.
It appears that n certain political element in
our midst arc making for Atlanta no very envia
ble reputation abroad. For instance, a corres
pondent writes to the New York Times as fol
lows, and wc are pained to admit that there is
some truth in bis statements. Kadical leagues
tlo indeed flourish here to the extent ol ouc to
every municipal ward, and many of our good
citizens would lie astonished to know how pow
erful they are becoming in tho hands ot a set ol
unprincipled white men—many of them “ to the
manor born," and others the veriest scum that
the late sectional strife brought to the top, nnd
which our otherwise highly respectable commu
nity is now besmeared with. The correspon
dent says:
The confiscation preachers, lay and clerical,
are making alarming headway with the colored
brethren, and more particularly in this go-ahead
town, where enterprise, license and lawlessness
form a blissful and inseparable trinity. Here
flourishes the hend-ceutcrs of Radical leagues,
with branches in every nook and cranny ol the
State. Here the most persistent efforts are made
to prepate that “just and true field for tho exer
cise of republican statesmanship" which Mr.
B. Butler is anxious to secure; and here, too,
the distinction which terrified Mr.Wado so much,
lias made both black and white Radicals quite
aghast with horror. Tittlebat Titmouse’s pro
mised act of Parliament, “A hill In give every
body everything," would be regarded here us llie
embodiment of republican statesmanship, if it
proviso'that "overybody” meant one who votes
lor the Radical parly were added.
High Rent..
Tliero is a general feeling in Ibis city that
the present stringent times demand a reduction
of rents, and we think not unreasonably, for our
merchants are doing so little that the burden falls
heavily upon them. Other mercantile commu
nities have moved in the matter, and in C’olum
bus the following was addressed to the landlords
ol that city:
The undersigned tenants have determined
unanimously that the present rate of leuts paid
for business houses is excessively higher than is
justified by the present condition of financial and
commercial affairs, and it is agreed that it is only
necessary to respectfully call the attention of
property holders to the necessity for it, in order
to secure such an abatement as would be equita
ble.
That rents have been too high cannot he ques
tioned, and it certainly needs no labored argu
ment to prove that business men are less able to
pay high rents now than formerly. If any have
r, doubt of this, we would refer to the great re
duction in income; none but property holders
having any to report.
The present is dark indeed; but the future
shows nothing but gloom to the merchant. \V ith
no profits for a yoar, and no hopes of auy in the
immediate future, wc muet curtail our expenses,
among the most important of which is house
rent.
There aro vacant houses which wo could se
cure at much less rent than we are now paying,
but wo have become identified with the houses
we occupy, nnd desire, with lower rents, to pre
serve that identity; hoping, with this prudent
precaution, to pass safely through the approach
ing financial storm, or that, perchance, it may
happily blow away, and we may again he able
to pay the rents which have been recently so re
munerative to our landlords.
Hoping to prevent Hie confusion which would
result from a general removal from our present
locations to cheaper houses now vacant, and
about to become so; and, before adopting any of
the other propositions which have been suggest
ed to secure lower rents, wc the undersigned ten
ants, would respectfully request our landlords
and the properly holders in the city generally, to
make, before Hie first of August, such equitable
agreement with their tenants, for a reduction in
rents for the coming year as will be just to the
landlord, ami, at the same time, not burden
some to tho tenant."
New American Cyclopmdlm.
A new book of this character is being edited
by Geo. ltiplcy and Chits. A. Dana, anti pul
lished by 1). Applclou A Co., of New York, anil
will doubtless prove one of the most useful
works ol the age. Every ono that reads, overy
one that mingles in society, is constantly meeting
with allusions to subjects on which farther infer
mation is both needed and desired. In conver
sation, in trade, in professional lifo, on the farm
in tho family, practical questions are continually
arising which no man, well read or not, can nl
ways satisfactorily answer. If facilities for re
ference aro at hand, they are consulted, and not
only is the curiosity gratified, and tho stock of
knowledge Increased, hut perhaps information
is gained and ideas arc suggested that will di
rectly contribute to the business success ot tho
party concerned. Bucli a book is tho Encyclo
paedia to which we rclor. It is a complete
library in itself, anil will lie sold by suhsi
only in this city, by the Rev. Win. Ill
who will call upon our citizens, or who will r<
reive subscriptions at the slore of tho Messrs.
Richards, op Alabama street, llelcr to the ait
vertisement tor farther particulars.
