Tiikre was about the usual attendance at the
regular weekly court of His Honor tho Mayor
yesterday morning, tho cases being generally of
an unimportant character. Tho docket was
cleared without any difficulty. The fact has
lieen patent for some time, in the absence of
crime, that the morals ot the city have improved,
and it is due the police department to sily that
we owe much ot it to their vigilance. It is to be
expected that in as general a thoroughfore as
this, lawless characters, while in transitu will,
give us some trouble, but even that class have
been scarce of late. Our crime record will com
pare favorably with that ot many smaller cities,
if newspapers are correct critcrions by which
such matters may be reckoned. Others than
ourselves liavo remarked this, and wo claim to
he faithlul chroniclers of passing events, and
presume that tho journals ot other cities do the
same.

4|illrk Time from Chattanooga via Nuvun-
nuli Co New York.
The Charleston papers liavo been luxuriating
on tlio fast time made between that city aud
Atlanta, aud have claimed in a modest way su
periority and great advantages offered by the
Palmetto town as a shipping point for our West
ern cities, in their consignments of merchandise
North.
We don't intend to exult, or, to use the better
word, brag, over “our place," but give below a
lew facts which will do all those interested much
credit, as well as showing our neighbors that
Savannah is tully alive to her interests.
A train of cars loaded with wheat, consigned
to New York, left Chattanooga ou Tuesday at
6 15 a. m., and arrived here at 6:25 p. m., Wed
nesday, and the wheat will leave here by the
steamer Gen. Ilarncn, to-day.
Tlio train came through by ordinary course,
as there was ample time to make all connections
but it necessary, however, the time could have
been lessened.
Tliis expeditious work is mainly duo to tho
eucrgetic aud live Macon & Western Road aud
Central Railroad. Let us have more of this, and
we will see whether Savannah does not hold her
own iu her present race with competitors.—Sa
