Two females reached this city yesterday
morning on the train from Augusta, and a more
helpless or unfortunate pair wo have not seeu
for many a day. They wero furnished with
transportation to Atlanta, aud are cither the pau
pers of some other locality, or there is some
villainy attached to their history. They are
aged respectively 25 years, and good looking.—
One has lost iter mind, aud is approuching ma
ternity, her history being uukuown, and her com
panion evincing no disposition to disclose it.
The unfortunate creature is little less titan a
maniac, and raved most frantically in the cala
boose, whither she was taken to he cared for.—
Her companion seemed attentive, but has no in
fluence whatever over her. It is suggested that
she is the victim of some base wretch, and that
the woman in whose charge she now appears
has been paid to escort her beyond the gaze of
tho author of her wrong. It was thought pro
per to send the pair back to their starting point,
and if posihle ascertain if some foul wrong has
not been perpetrated. She was to have been re
turned on the Augusta train of last evening. If
sho is simply a pauper, and is sent here in that
guise, this community respectfully protests
against other municipalities foisting such persons
upon us.

most enterprising and reliable merclianls. Ills

Heason, and as extensive and fashionable, includ
ing domestics and staple articles, as any other in
Ihe city. A long experience in the Dry Goods
trade in all its branches, enable^ him to please
Iho public and gratify their tastes as well ns

A number of prominent ladies in this city,
with the assistance of several geutlemcn, are ar
ranging an entertainment for Tuesday evening
next, at Davis' Hall, for an object that at once
appeals to and will enlist our sympathies—tlio
improvement of our Confederate Cemetery.
Tito ladies are endeavoring to invest that enter
tainment with every possible attraction, and'we
almost feel authorized to promise in advance
that it will be overwhelmingly successful. It
must not he otherwise, for the cause is too grand
a one to admit of failure. The entertainment
will have three distinct features—a musical soiree
—a sumptuous feast—aud fairy pantomimic
statues by tlio club of amateurs. Tho music is
to be both vocal aud instrumental, and will form
a not inconsiderable item in the evening’s pro
gramme. The supper will be exclusively man
aged by the ladies, and just such a ono was
never before gotten up in this city as will he
prepared for this occasion. The list of names
on that committee [see programme] warrants
such a conclusion. The performances of the
amateurs wero highly creditable on a previous
oecasiou, when their pantomimic fairy scones
were produced, and they will not fail in this in
stance to both amuse aud entertain. Altogether,
the affuir will bo made worthy of the ennobling
purpose tho ladies have in view, and we bespeak
for their efforts that warm encouragement our
citizens are ever ready to give to a good cause,
flefer to the advertisement elsewhere for par
ticulars.
Inlcrcxlug Ceremony!
laical items sometimes escape us, and the fol
lowing is one of them. A letter-writer to tlio
Dahlonega Signal, in giving an account ol the
manner in which the “ever memorable" was cele
brated in this city, makes mention of the follow
ing incident:
» * * “ In the procession you could see
shovels, spades, picks and axes; for what pur
pose those tools were on hand, no one conld im
agine at tho time; but as tilings progressed it de
veloped itself. These tools were used to dig a
grave, and in the evening a coffin was placed in
it and buried—the meaning of whicli was, that
slavery was dead, and buried forever.” *
This, we are informed by an eye-witness, did
certainly take place, and the grave was dug
within a lew leet of the speaker’s stand at the
City Hall, into which was lowered an ordinary
sized coffin eonUiniug a whip and a cowhide!—
Our informant states that the scene was most sol
emn and impressive. We would suggest that a
monument be erected over that grave to keep
company with another that is contemplated
hereabouts.
Vastest Time ou Record.
By the following note from Mr. Campbell,
Agent of the Macon A Western Itailroad, it will
he seen that the lreight route North, of which
that popular lino of railway forms a part, is

Dr. Thompson lias placed upon our table a
•singular malformation in the vegetable world, a
description of which we frankly admit our ina
bility to give. The reader may form some idea
■of it, however, when we say that it consists of
what proposes to bo an ear of corn, but is in
reality a mass of small ears, several hundred in
number, the whole grown compactly together.
It is a vegetable rara avis, and no mistake.
Correction.
Atlanta, Ga., July 24, 1807.
To the InteUiyeneer—In your publication this
morniugof tho resolutions passed by tbe Young
.Men's Library Association on Monday evening,
an error of the printer permitted the word “ lit
erary ” to supplant the word “ library," thus ob
scuring the real object of tlio meeting, whicli
was the establishment of a public circulating
library in thin city. A. R. Watson,
