Kev. J. W. Buhku, of the largo hook-store anil
printing establishment of Burke & Co., ol Ma
con, called at our sanctum yesterday.
Wb learn from parties living in ditlureut di
rections, that the rain which fell here inces
santly almost the entire day yesterday, was gen
eral, and reached many localities hitherto much
in want of it. From Maj. Juo. Hockenhull, of
Dawson county, who called upon us yesterday,
we learu that there had been no tall of rain upon
his place for nearly two months, though Irequent
rains had fallen in the county generally, and
that tlie crops were promising.

Tlie evidence lu this case was concluded yes
terday afternoon before ilia Honor Judge Smith.
At the conclusion of the examination of witnes
ses, and before the court passed upon tho merits
‘ ol the cose, the prisoner proposed through his
counsel that, while he was conscious of having
beeu fully justified in all that ho did, ho prefer
red that the matter should go up to t)ie Superior
Court, in order that a lull jury ot his country
men should determine as to hia guilt or iuno-
cence, and proposed that lie give bond iu the
sum of $5,000 to appear before that court. This
was promptly accepted by tlie court, and Mr.
Loyd was released from custody.

cutod counterfeit $10 bill on tho Flour City Na

The Christian Index-New and lutoront-
lufC Feature,
This large and handsome sheet, we are grnti
tied to learn, continues to grow in popularity iu
this and the adjoining States, and deservedly so,
fur its proprietor and editor omit neither expense
nor labor to give interest to its columns. A new
feature will bo introduced iu tlie next number,
tiud one that cannot prove other than vastly at
tractive. A company ol distinguished gentle
men from the Southern States are now traveling
in Europe, and will contribute Irom time to time
u series of interesting letters to the Chrutian In
■ ilea. The letters will he written from various
Juteresting points in the Old World, and will
-embrace the result of observations whilst tra
•versing places of historic interest—ol men and
women—ol churehes—and ol matters and things
.generally, as seen through American spectacles,
.Many ol these sketches will appear over the sig
nature of “ Kiffln,” tlie nom tie plume of a dis
tinguished divine well known in the South.—
They will continue for several months, perhaps
longer, during which timo the columns of the
Christian Index will bo found especially attrac
tive. It is perhaps unnecessary to say more to
.convince all who may want a journal of that
character that this is a favorable moment to en
roll their names as subscribers to a religious
jpaper in every way deserving a liberal support
at tlie hands of our people. Address: J. J
Toon, proprietor, Atlanta, Georgia.
The KellOKK Gold Mine*.
We were shown yesterday by J. J. Thrasher,
Esq., a rich specimen of ore from tlie above
valuable mines, in Cherokee county, which are
now being worked by Mr. Thrasher, and several
other gentlemen of this city. Machinery lias
been gotten into full operation, and while it is
uot as extensive or as effleiut as the wealth ol
t ie mine would warrant, the company interest
ed in it hope to be rewarded by an abundant
yield ol tho prcciouB metal. The sample shown
us, though in a crude state, is, we are assured,
equal to any gold found auywhere in tlie world.
Thus are we again reminded of the illimitable
wealth of our much loved old commonwealth
in mineral resources. The mine to which we
refer is but one ol hundreds in tliiB section either
partially developed, or positively known to ex
ist, and only wanting a restored stato of society
and capital to make them disgorge a boundless
■wealth now hidden from our impoverished peo
ple.
Weal, GuUirle A Co.
We desire to call Bpecial attention to tlie ad
vertisement of tho above firm, than Whom no
gentlemen in this commercial community rank
deservedly higher. They occupy a spacious
store room on Peach-Tree* street, and aro cn
gaged in a general commission business, having
by the strictest Integrity and liberal dealing
growu in |xipularity with all who have trans
acted business with lliein. They will deal ex
teusivcly in groceries, produce and provisions,
and will fill all orders for tlie city or country
trade in a satisfactory manner.
Mr. A. A. Winn, a gcullemau it lias been our
pleasure to know lor yean, is connected with
the house of West, Guthrie & Co., aud will be
found prompt to serve his old Irieuds in his pre
sent lino of huiiness.
It was only a half-interest in the Bell-Johnsou
Opera Hall that was sold at auction lor $14,500
the other day. .
