Tub pins milk cow ot Robert Crawford, Esq.,
said to bo the best in all Georgia, was killed a
day or two ago in tlio woods adjacent to the
Federal barracks. It was a vandal act for which
Mr. Crawford cannot account, as she was left
untouched.
Firb Company No. 1 were engaged yesterday
utlernoon In putting the new alarm bell in tlio
belfry of their engine house.
Samuel Smith, an unfortunate idiot boy, the
son of Rev. N. W. Smith, of Jonesboro’, Clay
ton county, wandered awny from home on last
Sunday, and has not sinco returned. He was
last heard from Monday evening about halt a
mile this side of Rough aud Ready, traveling in
the direction ot this city. Great anxiety is felt
lest, in his almost helpless condition, he should
ramble otl' and pcriBh. Ho is about live leet live
inches high, with auburn hair and blue eyes.
Any information concerning his whereabouts,
left at this office or sent to his father at .Jones
boro’, will be thankfully received by his dis
tressed parents.
The Atlanta Opera Hoimo.
Jiblglug fro A what has passed from timo to
tlmo through the papers North and Bouth.lt
may bo of somo interest to tlio public to know
that our Opera IIouso Is now under prosperous
headway. I’lio indications now amount to nn
absolute certainty that by or before tlio middle
ot September, tho handsomo aud stupendous
structure will lie comfortably under roof. Messrs.
Ileoly, Horry & Hayden, men who are known to
have stamina as well as enorgy, have undertaken
to get tlio building ready for tlio roof at once,
l'lio third story is now half way up; aud the
fourth and last will ho added immediately.—
Hence, wo can see that tho probabilities aro that
wo will by tho end of tho year liavo an entirely
home-mndo building,- whicli will bo not only one
of tlie largest in tho South, but one of tho hand
somest.
Tho Opera House building, being one hundred
by ono hundred and fifty foot, covers flltcon thou
sand squaro feet. Tlio fronts on Marietta autl
Wadlcy Streets aro massivo iron structures, said
to ho superior iu design to anything south of the
Ohio river. Tho castings for these fronts were
mado entirely in this city, by tho foundry of
Messrs. Hoge, Mills & Co. Tlio stone work is of
the celebrated Stone Mountain granite, which
lias no superior iu tlio world for building pur
poses. Tho brick work is wholly iu the hands
of Messrs. Ilcely, Berry & Hayden, who ns build
ers have no superiors, and who liavo possibly
done more brick work in this city than any
other firm. Tlio wood work, we believo, is in
the bunds of Messrs. Scofield & Feck.
When this ahull liavo been completed, which
now seems sure to bo within -the present’yenr,
Atlanta will bo provided with all tlio place", of
amusement that will bo needed for many years
to come. Sucli tilings are necessary iu all cities;
and to make them what they ought to be, they
should bo adapted to tho higher purposes of tlio
legitimalc drama. Sinco the war we have been
debarred a high order of amusements, simply by
having no suitable hall. This one completed, it
will suit any purpose, being adapted to the appli
cation of any stage machinery, from tho lowest
comedy to the highest drama. Hence we may
hope lo have with us during the winter some ol
tile “stars” who arc delighting the citizens of
other communities.—Ladies' Home.
The fixtures of the late Brown & Wildman
bunking house were sold at auction by the Sheriff
yesterday, in accordance with an order from
tlie Superior Court, issued by His Honor John
Follies', The magnificent bankiug counter, cost
ing originally $1,100, was sold to Col. J. M. Ball
lor $103. The iron safe which cost $1,000, was
sold to Frank P. Rice jtor $300. The other fix
tures went at correspondingly low figures. The
sale was made by W. L. Hubbard, Deputy Sheriff
The Mineiial Spiuno improvements are be
mg rapidly pushed forward under the euergetic
management of George Johnson, who is deter
mined that the place shall be fixed up in n man
ner worthy of the health-giving fountain, where
invalids may be restored to vigor. If not uow^
the day is not far distant when the hygenic pro
perties of the spring will he fully acknowledged
not only here at homo, hut by persons lrorn
abroad in search ol health. We are glad to
know, therefore, that the piece will ho made at
tractive by suitable buildings, and that tho
grounds will be tastefully laid ofi and decorated
with shrubbery, shade trees, etc. Mr. Johnson
will bo enabled, by means of tho brook that runs
hard by, aud the waters from the spring, to
.have a beautiful pond on the premises. On the
lltriuk of this lie will plant the “willow," nud
:.u oiiih1 it arrange cozy little summer-houses aud
TU-hors. His plans are admirably concocted, and
we may reasonably expect to see Hie place made
very attractive under his supervision. A little
time only is wanting.

Mr. .Holland’* Lecture.
The lecture of the above gentleman will take
iplace to-morrow evening at Trinity Church, and
we again repeat that persons who have listened
to his elegant discourses assure us that a ricli
treat is in store for our citizens. The lecturer
wasut one twjo known as the "Boy Preacher of
Kentucky," being a native of that State. His
subject wifi he “(ferus^Jem,” a locality recently
visited by him. Fifry will he charged, the
proceeds to ho given to tho Fair Ground Sunday
School. We are requested to state that the in
terest ot the occasion will be enhanced by music
from the choir of that church, the ladies and
gentlemen composing it having consented to re-
1,earse a lew special pieces for Monday evening.
Tickets may be had at the book-stores.
City Park.
Tlie necessity for public places ot resort is in
herent in the organization of cultivated society.
Our intellectual pleasures are enhanced by tlio
contributions of social enjoyment. Whatever
delights the cyo instructs the miud. A varie
gated landscape, tv grove, a forest, a tree, a llower,
dottiug the green garniture of earth, is a picture
of heaven, blending its light and shade, its deli
cate tints and Us deeper hues, with-the beautiful
world of thought. We need more of tho ideal
with the real. The miud craves relaxation—the
heart yearns for a broader expanse in open fields,
under the blue of boundless skies. Atlanta is
replete with physical life and energy. She is
alive to the wants and necessities of the bodily
man. Let her not neglect the spiritual. The
former is as perishable as it is material—the lat
ter enduring as immortal. We must look to the
taste and culture of our hearts ns well ns homes.
With our places ol business, of public worship,
we must also provide for occasional recreation.
When inclination prompts us to the promenade
—wlieu we would go forth in quest of the beau
tiful, to spend an hour in communion with na
ture, looking abroad upon tlie creations of God,
wc have no resort where the earlh is velvctcd
with greeu, with overhanging groves to lend a
grateful shade, nor flowery walls redolent with
fragrance and bloom, nor singing birds to charm
us with their melodies, nor silvery fountains
sparkling in the light. But Atlanta must have
such a place; she must have a public park ; her
growing importance demands it; her niorul and
intellectual improvement require it; it is a nc
cessity ot her health and happiness.
We understand the city owns twenty-live
acres of land, In what is familiarly known as
the “Fair Ground.” She should, without delay,
donate at least ten acres ot this for the purpose
indicated. Ten acres fronting the street appro
priated in this way, instead of lessening, would
only enhance the value of the remainder. What
11 an appropriation has been made to one of the
Universities contemplating a removal to this
city? Tho park fronting the college, would
render cither the more desirable. Instead of the
one detracting from the other, what could be
more appropriate than their near proximity?
Tlie park could bo fitted up with an eye to
May-day and Sabbath School celebrations. In
stead of our Sabbatli Schools being compelled to
seek contiguous towns on festival occasions, those
towns would gladly unite with us in our cele
brations.
We trust tins subject will elicit that attention
which it deserves nt tlie bands of our authorities,
and that some tangible plan will be set on foot,
joking to tlie consummation of so desirable an
Russell.

Tlio Collation
Served up for the members of “ No. 2 ” by
Hint most popular ol all caterers, our old ac
quaintance, “Joe Berman,” on Friday night
hist, was a most excellent and successful alluir,
to which justice was done by tho “ boys” and
their guests on tho agreeable occasion. The
Committee ol a previous occasion, in the mun-
uer aforesaid, on the part ot this noble and
lerprising Fire Company, manifested both dis
cretion and wisdom, which all who partook of
the collation will hear testimony to. Two or
three hours were passed in the exchange of senti
. nient and song by those who were fortunate
. ein.iigb to bo present, and orotlio hour of twelve
had been sounded, nil had retired to tlieir
1 homes.
We are gratified in being able to state that
•• No. 2” of the “ Fire Department” of this elty
is in a flourishing condition, aud notwithstaml
ing tho times, that its progress is an onward
• me. May it always prove thus, and may the
progress of each individual member of it be
onward in this life, and upmrd when lie shall,

The commission house presided over by the
almve gentlemen has long enjoyed a deserved
popularity, and we are pleased to observe even
iu theso dull times, signs of activity thereabouts
which indicate that a liberal share of both city
and cotmtry trade still flows in that direction.
