The PnopiuKTOB of the “Iktblmuehcbk”
Inis appointed Mr. V. T. Harnivki.i. Agent to
niuvoss this city for ttie purpose of extending
iis circulation and procuring advertisements for
11.1 columns. We commend the gentleman to
our city Iricnds, and trust tlmt his mission among
them will prove a sticcesslnl one, and redound
1.1 the material benefit of them and of this office.
Atlanta, August 7,18G7.
The Minion Telegraph.
We lake pleasure in notifying our merchants,
and olliersot our fcllnw-cUizcus, that Mu. F. F.
Tahbk, a gentleman acting as aOent for the
Macon Telegraph, is now in this city canvassing
m the interest ot that most excellent journal.—
We commend Mr. Tabkh to the kind courtesies
ol our city friends, many of whom, especially
our merchants and oilier business men, will find
it advantageous to advertise in the Telegraph a,
its circulation is large in a section of onr State
-Southern and Southwestern Georgia—that
trades largely in Atlanta.

*Ve regret very much to learn that our fellow-
citizen, Col. W. W. Boyd, has been laboring
from functional derangement of the heart
for some days past. Ills brethren and Lodges of
the Masonic Fraternity, over which lie presides
as “ Deputy Grand Master," are advised that in
consequence ol this indisposition, Col. Boyd has
not been, and will not lie aide to pay them the
regular visit for a time at least. We trust
that his health will soon lie restored, nod dial his
valuable services to the “Fraternity’’ at a dis
tnnee in die State may he resumed at an early
period.
Clly Tax Payer.,
The gentleman who presides over this branch
of the city’s revenue, Jo. 8. Smith, Esq., a laid
lid and vigilant city official, announces in an
oilier column that the time allowed delinquent
has been extended to the lirst of September, nlt<
which period the amount will he doubled upon
all who have failed to make their returns for
real estate, street and poll tax. As summary
measures will then, alter September, be resorted
i to for its collection, it is by far the wisest policy
to go promptly forward and give die matter die
necessary attention. The law says that deliu
quents shall he double-taxed, which penalty real
estate owners will ilud rather heavy in their pre
sent impoverished condition; while the doubling
,,t street and poll tax upon another class will be
equally severe, the former being $3 and the lat
ter $1, or If neglected uutil alter September, $8
for the whole, instead ot $4.
In this connection wo lmve a word for our
colored fellow-citizens, who arc henceforth to
have an equal voice in all municipal matters.
The tux laws now apply to them precisely
they do to the whites. According to registra
don, there are 1B21 of them in die city who are
liable to pay street and poll tax, and Mr. Smith
the collector, informs us that only twenty have
given in their returns, leaving sixteen hnndr
and one yet to go forward nud discharge the
monied obligations they are due the city. Tills
we presume they will do, ns their participancy
in die coming municipal elections is involved, it
it is expected that our laws are to be obeyed.
As many of them aro not aware that sucli pay
ment is required at their hands, means should
he used to apprise tlieinol the pecuniary re
-ipousibility attached to the franchise privilege
they aro henceforth to enjoy.
ftlr. Holland’* Lecture.
The lecture of this gentleman, on Monday
evening, at Trinity Church, was largely attended
tiy the most intelligent of our people. The lee
liner's style of oratory is of a highly pleasing
character, and his command of language com
plete, his thoughts and ideas in every instance,
nl most readily, being dressed up in a manner
as tasty os a woman would arrange into a bo-
qnet a choice hoop ot ttowers. Ills theme—that
,,l “Jerusalem"—'was a fruitful one, and it would
he perfectly inexcusable in one who had been
i,.re—hud trodden soil so sacred, and looked
upon scenes of which the world lias read for
ilteen centuries—not to be able to interest an
audience, tie did interest, but there was too
much elocution lor a lecture—too many digres
sions from the subject, and not enough of the
descriptive.
We learn that the net proceeds of the house
were $141 50, which goes to the Fair Ground
Sunday School. Mr. Holland is richly entitled
to the thanks ot this community.

Tlie Coriiueoi.iii of 1887
The following Iroin the St. Louis Democrat
II he read tiy tho whole country with more
than ordinary interest :
The country laughs with an abundant harvest
Throughout the greater part of Illinois, this
State, and Kansas, the crop already partly liar-
csteil lias been very large; the promise of the
top nut yet gathered in, not only in these States
but to the north want, is very bright; nnd from
the South nnd East all reports concur in repre
senting the yield as exceedingly nbimdnnt. Spe
dilators in grain count their losses, and consu
mers already rejoice in a Inti ot prices. The
ouutry is richer already, and teels it. Some
estimate that the crop of 1807 alone would more
than half pay the national debt.
It is not merely in the actual iucrcaso of wealth
that this bountiful harvest will do good. It will
make life easier lor all laborers and consumers.
To the poorer classes, especially, the aliundauci
of provisions, bringing low prices, will lie pecu
liarly grateful. But this is not all. Agriculturi
is the basis of all our prosperity. When this
fails, everything stagnates. The blood in nil the
veins and arteries of business Hows feebly. With
a bountiful harvest, it hounds gladly through the
pulses, fresh, vigorous, and full of Hie, the strength
returns, and activity becomes it necessity.
Millions uf dollars have been locked up wail
ing for this harvest. Business of all kinds lias
wailed ; enterprise of the utmost importance has
lic-en cheeked; financial depression lias prevail
ed; Mr. McCulloch lias looked gloomy, and tl,
receipts from internal revenue have fallen oil
nearly forty per cent. Everybody was sailin^
under close canvas expecting a squall. The
storm cloud lias passed. The Wall street lm
rometer, with rising stocks, predicted fair wea
ther. The sky is clear again, and every one feels
that business must now revive. Confidence, the
parent of prosperity, returns. The farmer re
cives a handsome sum, and puts no small part
ot it into circulation at once. The money starts
machinery that had stood idle; revives trade that
had been dormant.
The crop, once harvested, must be moved and
manufactured ; tho great army of people engaged
in transporting from producer to consumer, or
preparing the food lor consumption, already an
ticipate a brisk business. Prices fall, and profits
now become possible in ninny branches oi busi
ness tlmt have stagnated because of the cost ol
living. So the magic intiuence extends tlirougl
all the arteries and veins ol trade and commerce
just as the sunny glow ot the rich wine dances
through the blood, even to the tips of the fingers,
until every part ot the body feels the genial slim
ulus. And wo only hope that the country, in
stead of bending its new energies to the work of
increased production, may not rush wildly into
speculation.
