We hear but one expression of opinion from
all localities in regard to tiie corn crop of this
section of country, viz: that it is now beyond
the reach of drought, and will be bountiful. In
referring to it tis “ bountiftll,” it should be under
stood that we mean so tar as the ground lias been
cultivated. Our agricultural friends have not | j j^Noy'lfie,''“Macon"'
been able to procure the labor necessary to ex
tended operations, and hence will have little or
none to place on the market for the use ot non
producers. If all the contracts for field labor,
made witli freedmen iu January last, had been
tnithfully fulfilled, many—very many—fields oi
ripened grain would have greeted us in the au
tumn that now are only yielding ill weeds. But
tilings are not as they should he, and our poor
farmers—nor have any of us—the power to ap
ply a corrective, and so let us thank God for
ivliat we have, aud hope for a more prosperous
future. Unquestionably there is much to mnke
our hearts glad even in this midnight of our
gloom.
Several tine milk cows have recently been
shot on the road lcadiug out by the military bar
racks, and in that vicinity, by persons ns yet un
known, though trom partial investigation it is
believed to have been the work of negroes who
are cultivating patches of ground, around which
the fencings are imperfect. Tho cows from the
city go there to grazo, and in some instances
have doubtless iutruded upon the crops, with the
above result. Besides the fine cow of Mr. Craw-
lord, which was killed dead, several others have
hobbled home literally ruined by buck-shot. It
is certainly perplexing for the farmer to have
his premises invaded by stock, hut lie is by no
means justified in taking such summary mea
sures to abate the evil, especially when his fen
cings are of a character to invite intrusion, The
killiug of stock under the circumstances is a
high handed outrage that should be severely
punished by law, aud we hope the guilty parties
will he dealt with os they deserve. The loss of
a fine milk cow is one that tew families iu these
hard times can allor i to bear.
