NATIONAL HOTEL.
I'HOPIlUTOn.
A protracted MEETING will commence ill
the First Presbyterian Church this evening.—
The Hev. Mr. Wood will officiate to-niglit.
The officers of the Young Mens’ Library
Association were regularly installed Inst night
iu the Council Chamber, nt the City Hall. The
youug gentlemen have taken hold of the matter
iu earnest, and its success is now beyond ques
tion. A grand concert Is on the tapis to raise
means to commence a library. Success to so
piaiseworthy an undertaking.
Personal.
Gen. Howell Cobb readied the city last even
ing. We learn that be enjoys excellent health,
and is rather hopeful than otherwise at certain
indications abroad. The General has a host of
frie"(!s in this city.
Negro Infanticide Cane.
Out at the race track, where reside a lot of ne
groes, a newly horn child mysteriously disap
peared, the mother nnd all hands disclaiming
any knowledge of its whereabouts. Investiga
tion, however, discloses the fact that it was
thrown in a well by a negro woman, and that it
was done with the mother’s consent. The per
petrator of the awful crime was yesterday ar
rested, and now remains in confinement. The
mother continues very ill, and was not dis-
lurbod.
Stolon Goods Uecovered.
Wc learn from n member ol the police depart
ment that the goods, consisting mostly ol cloth
ing, lately taken from the house of Mr. Robert
Crawford, were yesterday found in a negro
shanty on Calhoun street, near Decatur. The
matter was investigated, hut the perpetrators of
the robbery wero not found. The negro women
in whose possession the clothing was found stale
that a crazy woman, well known around town,
carried them there. Articles stolen from the
Rev. Mr. Shaver, as well as from others, were
found at the same place. We would suggest a
thorough cleaning out of all such nesfs. Crazy
women are not usually so successful in thieving—
they have accomplices.
The Jonesboro’ Concert.
Our readers are reminded that the Concert,
under the auspices of the Jonesboro’ Ladies’
Cemetery Association, will take place this eve
ning. Such of our citizens as may leel disposed
to make a pleasant little excursion, hear some
good music, and contribute a small mite to a
worthy object, can do so by taking the Macon
train of 7.10 P. M., which will reach thero in lull
time. They can return home by 4 A. M. on
Saturday morning. From the programme before
us, we are of opinion that tho entertainment will
ho a good one.
"The Athens Watchman claims that Order 40
does not aflect that journal, and tells county of
ficers to continue their favors. We congratulate
the Watchman on being able to retain its pat
ronage, but the company we find it iu is another
matter. There are six of them, and the list
stands: Samnnah Republican, National Repub
lican, (Augusta,) American Union, (Grittln,) Daily
Opinion, New Era, (Atlanta,) and Athens Watch
man. Wc are rather of theopiniou, Col. Christy,
that one of these times you will regret to have
your ably conducted journal so classed I But
that is none of our business—chacun a ion gout!"
The above paragraph is clipped from the At
lauta Intelligencer, ot the 23d inslant, and we
need scarce add, lias rather amazed us. We
cannot imagine what the Watchman has ever
said, or its editor and proprietor done, to
our Atlanta friend in classing us with the Radi
cals. We have never occupied ultra ground on
any question, and, least ol all, have we exhibited
any signs of going over to the Radicals. We
claimed, and still claim, that General Pope's or
der referred to does not aflect us, because we
have not thrown obstacles in tho way of recon
struction, or obstructed civil officers in the dis
charge ol their duties by malting threats against
them.
Taking the plain and obvious meaning of the
order referred to, we cannot see how it can he
so construed as to prevent civil officers from ad
vertising in our paper; and we caunot for one
moment believe that the order means anything
else than appears from tho face of it. Why,
then, the Intelligencer should class the
Watchman with the Radical press is a matter
which “ passetli our understanding.”
As that paper is read by great numbers who
never see ours, we scarcely need akk our Atlanta
cotempornry to do us the justice to state that we
lay no claim to puHtica! fellowship with the
Radicals.—Athene Watchman.
Then, brother Christy, "nary a time” can y.ai
hope to retain the official patronage y»u now
receive. “Fellowship witli tho radicals" can
only secure it to you, and wc arc “amazed” at
your being so fur bebiud the age as to expect,
favors without that “ fellowship.” This journal
has not opposed reconstruction, hut lias favored
a convention, and advised the people to register
and vote for it, hut as it could not affiliate with I
indicate, hug the African, ride rough-shod over {
the Constitution, and auliscrihe to all sorts of j
monstrous doctrines by which the liberties ol Un
people are being crushed out, its patronage was
takcu from it. Order 41) even disregarded a
written and regularly aigned up contract which
secured to this journal the advertising and print
ing of the pity of Atlanta—a contract quite as
sacred as that embraced on tho face of a pro
missory note in the pocket of any gonllcmn'u. it
is not reconstruction but radicalism which you
are ex|>ected to support, Colonel. Do that or
you are "gone up," and we aie satisfied you will
not
The 81. Elmo.
For courtesies received from this popular Sa
loon, which has recently changed its ritnpuiK-
T'okship, wc have to return thanks. The gentle
man who now presides over it, is determined
that it shall he an orderly, well-conducted estab
lishment, and that none other than pure, unadul
terated refreshments shall he administered to Ids
patrons. To the weary and thirsty business
men of our city, we comineud tho “ St. Elina "
as worthy of patronage in its line of business.
Mk. Pike is ever on hand "lo do the agreeable,”

pleasant to all who call upon him. -
