kins, a friend of Mr. McAllister, and 1 reply at
ones. I am sorry your friend did not flud it
convenient to coao to this place, as I would
take pleasure in forwarding his views. It la,
perhaps, oae hundred and fifty miles front here
to San Pedro, when the oniony of Americans la
established, and a very rough road, or rather
path, over the mountain*.
Uonduraa la a ataall republic, about the size
of the State of New York, having a territory ot

ttorderiog oa the Bay of Uouduraa and the Unr-

from the beat of the climate. Towards the
Weal and Southwest the country ia very moun-

grain can be raised annually. One planting
suffices three years for cotton, and two crops are
produced in IS mouth*. Soger cane lasts from
20 to 80 years, without re-planting. Mountain
rice, coflee, indigo, and, in font,' everything that
grows in the tropica fiourlsbet here -, and tap
fruits last all the year rottct Peachea and ap
ples are not good, but oranges, lemons, plan
tains, ben annas, and flty other apecies, are for
superior to any you etiuw UffW In the United
Slate*. Orangea aall at aix lor a cent, and piuu
appiea at Ms for twelve cento. Chickens, tur
keys, Ac., are abundant, but not so cheap. Beef
and mutton arb paaslMy pood and very cheap,
and it I were a young man, I would desire noth
ing better than a home here, provided t had
some of my Mends with me. The country
abounds in gold and silver mines, the latter of
which araaaid to be the tfoheat in the world,
and nothing it required to make Honduras the
most ptnsgBWil angaiqi on the foce of the globe
bat a people cif some little energy; but they have
none. There is not a w^on or can in the coun
try, nor a rand that yow would think any animal
without eiam could travel It obma four times
u anch to tfaagport goods from Onto* here, as
ft doaa from England to Atlanta, and a journey
oi two handled mile* with loaded mules re
quires about a month. The colony at San
Pedro is in a moat pleasant location, quite
warm, but very gtab, with plenty of Water,
power, in reach of the coast, over a level sec
tion of country, which win .present facilities
tor good roads, with little or no expense. Mj\jor
Malcolm, Mr. Watkins, and Mr. Briers, are here
now, and all teem sanguine and foil of hope:—
The people of the country, so far aa 1 have heard
an expression of opinion, are peaceably disposed
towards colonists; and foe government officials
ore all anxious for foe proaperity of the new
city. I can hardly adviae you to come, if you
are doing well where you are. Your present bu
siness would not pay here; sad it would take you
a year to learn the language sufficiently well to
enable you to do anything in foe way of trade
with native citizens. But it yon wish to go into
other butioeaa, that is, raising cattle or males, or
to embark in agriculture, yon can soon make as
much money as you want I would adviae any
young man who it not afraid of a little hardship
to come.
Five years steady industry, and no man need
strike a stroke in the way of labor afterwards —r
The mines, to a man who understands that bu-
siness, present, perhaps, a chance to become
rich in lest time than any other way, but there is
more risk. A few days since a gentleman left
with me two pieeet of silver, taken from the
mines near here, which have but recently been
discovered and opened. Two hundred pounds
of this ore yielded thirty two merks of pure sil
ver, or about three hundred and twenty dollars.
A merk of sliver is worth in England or at the
United State* Mint about ten dollars, tboqgb
universally it is but eight. The Impossibility ol
transporting machinery to the mines renders
operations in that branch of basinets much more
expensive than it would otherwise be. Men of
energy would soon bar* roads. 1 think I have
answered your questions, but if you or your
friends desire any information, I will cheerfully
afford it, if in my power.
I am, sir, yours fraly, B. H. ltousskau.
