We have just been informed hv an inlelli-g.-nt
gentleman ot Henry eountv '.hat he attended tb*-
-ession ol the County Court, held in that county
lost week, and witnesued the scenes to whieli we
eail altentiou.
There were two negroes empanneied as grand.
aud six as petit jurors. A treediuaa woe ar- i
raigned on his traverse trial for peli-. lurceuv. I
and six white men and six colored empanneled ]
to try him. The proof was clear, as testilied to
by intelligent and trustworthy white men, th:u
the accused had stolen Irom a white man. twen- ;
•.v-nve dollars in gold and silver, and when ar- ;
rested, the defendant admitted that he had taken -
,nd concealed the money, and conducted die j
prosecutor and others to the place of conceal
ment. where twenty-two dollars ind rifty cents
of die money was ibund, concealed in a hollow
-■•g—he having appropriated two dollars and
any- cents ot me stolen funds. Not,withstand- j
ng the proof thus positively showed his guilt,
•lie six negroes on the jury obstinately refused to
tied a verdict; and after remaining in the jure
>ox nearly ail night, they were discharged and
miss-trial ordered. Bully tor Order No. j.i and
>4. If the accused had lieen i white man, no
loiibt he would have been summarily convicted ,
The same gentleman informed us that die Ai-
•orney who defended the accused, tor the pur
pose, we suppose, of exciting the colored portion
->t 'lie jury, said that all negroes who had been
tried in Henry and tne surrounding counties,
iiad been convicted, whether guilty or not. We
take this occasion to say, that, if lie did make
this statement, he is wholly ignorant of passing I
events, or else he intended by his remarks to mis- ;
lead the jury by exciting the worst passions ol t
die human heart. There were only two negroes
put upon their trial during the lost term of Hie -
■superior Court ot this county—one for 1 urglary
ind the other tor vagrancy—both of whom were i
lelunded by Doyle A Nnnnally and were uc-
Iuitted upon technical exceptions to the indict - '
nient whilst, a white woman was convicted
We apprehend that lawyers are justifiable in re- |
sorting to all honorable and legitimate means i>
tetend their clients, but we cannot conceive mat |

<l truth. At tirst the President w:ui denounced
ia au usurper—a tyrant—because he thought it
expedient to order Oeneral Sheridan from one
Military District to another ; dow, a journal t hm
has been most prolltic in publishing calumnies
ipun the President—political ami personal—ad
mits dial he has not transcended his legal power
md says the tault is in the law grunting linn an- i
thurily. Again, it was athruled that the Presi- ■
lent sent for Mr. Langston aud urged him to :
■uke i ienerai. Ho ward's place, but In-declined -ill i
this is dcliou. Mr. Langston nulled upon tin-
President voluntarily to solicit the appointment
ol Ministor to Hayti. Another tahriciuion, a
gr'iss aud wicked and mischievous lie, is, that
the President bail resolved to declare the win He
country under martial law and to prevent, the
meeting ot Congress -. to this is added the libel
ls to his private buhiut, accusing him of intoxi
cation, Jte. The relations between the Execu
tive. anil the commander of the army have also
been wilfully misrepresented. It was announced
with great glee that General Grunt would nut
issue tiie order for General Sheridan’s transfer,
but i lie order has been issued ami hears General
Gram s signature. These are amoug the scores
-if malicious inventions that have til let 1 Radical
journals within a lew days to gratify party ma
levolence , such false testimony is grateful to the
Radical palate.—Ponton Punt.
