North Bud Sunday School.
The orphan children of the above school lie-
ing in want of books, etc., Maj. Connor lias
kindly consented to give an exhibition with Itis
famous Magic Lantern to raise means for tliut
purpose. Fowler's Hall, at the junction ol Ma
rietta and Walton streets. 1ms been selected as a
suitable place, and the exhibition will take place
to-night, commencing at the usual hour. The
varied aud pleasing character of the illustrations
produced by Maj.Connor’s lantern will lie renu-in-
liered by all who attended the recent exhibitions
given by him, and we hope the little orpliuus will
not be forgotten to-night, but that a large audi
ence will aid litem by assembling. The tench
t rs in charge of the North End School have la
bored zealously to make it a good one: and
while they have been partially successful, there
yet remains much to be accomplished. Books
are wanted, and there are iu hand no means to
purchase litem ; but if the entertainment of to
night is well attended, the little ones will have
ail the books they want, and the school go on
successfully. We hope our citizens will respond
to this call from the orphan.
TnE firm ot Pease & Jack, proprietors of the
• Empire Restaurant,” on Alabama street, has
hecn dissolved by mutual consent, Mr. Pease re
maining in charge of the “Empire." and Mr. W.
F. Jack returning to his old “stamping ground”
on Whitehall street, the popular establishment ot
his brother, O. W. .lack, Esq., where henceforth
he may be found. The ice cream feature of tlie
•’Empire” has been discontinued, but Mr. Pease,
known far and wide as a prince among rtetnu-
r tUun, will still be found ready to tickle tlie
palate of the veriest epicure in all this laud. His
saloon is not only famed for tlie neat and orderly
manner in which it is kept, but its patrons have
had served to them every delicacy within reach
by Express, or otherwise. The ladies'depart
ment of the “Empire Restaurant" lias been all
tbe rage with our belle* and benux during the
summer, where was served to them tbe choicest
of ices, creams and fruits by the attentive pro
prietors and their polite assistants, and we regret
that the season necessitates its close. Tlie retir
ing partner, Mr. W. F. Jack, will for a short
season, however, be able to serve the ladies with
ice creams, etc., at the establishment of his
brother on Whitehall street. Both establish
ments are well worthy of success.

Tlie market opened in September at. 33 cents
for upland middling*, and under the disastrous
crop account kept steadily advancinir, until Octo
ber 1 fitti, when middlings touched 43 cents. Du
ring the next month, on a lower range of gold
and a partial suspension of the crop alarm, the
price tell as abruptly os it had risen, and 33 cents
was again the price on November lStli. During
the next six weeks, owing to a variety of causes,
prices rallied to 33 cents, whiclt was tbe current
price January 1st, 1867. For thenexttwomonths
prices were weak, and the market despondent in
tone, and March opened witlt midtilings at 31e.
From this point prices steadily declined uiiiil
April 20th, when a panic seized tlie cotton mar

panic; on the 30th after middlings Imd sold at
24 cents. The reaction came and an advance ol
4 cents per pound was made in one week. Front
May 1st to June 10th middlings ruled at 27 cents,
alter which date the line crop accounts reduced
quotations, aud prices fell oti to 20 cents. Atmnt
the middle of July prices took an upward ten

mistaken estimates of supply and consequent

sounder views would prevail during tlie year
then opening, and that the misfortunes ol the

hopes, however, we were disappointed ; the same
mistaken ideas led to the same unfortunatu re
