"Now, gentlemen, you see the three eni\l>, two

Here is the old familiar scene of the racetrack
ami circus ol years ago, "tliree-caral monte,” w itli
its usual crowd ot gaping verdants, with ha-ra:

uiruetl and the accidental twist ot the corner of
ilia' real card has mysteriously beconte a most j
kiliully inteutlonal carl on tire corner of oue of
Uu* liiack oucs. The money is lost ami tlic same
old game goes on, while it is hard to tell which
..I the two, victim or “capper," shows llac most
rueliil face over wliat secuis their cimimon loss.
.Inst bcvonil is a billiard table, with paTliaps

' the game is maile. Will some gentleman roll
ilie balls?" A pause aud “ Coulo wins," by the
line voice, ami a few minutes after licgiiiu the
same monotonous recitative to make a new game.
Opposite this is a dirty-looking tellow, behind
i table on which is spreads painted cloth,uiaark-

and various additional marks, which he explains
a* lie goes along: " Te Huflana lixldcry, shen-

devil ol a teamster or emigrant is caught in iiis
toils, and finds too late that it is only another
phase of the method of cheating a man out of
his money which be may see around him.
A little further along on the right is a roulette
wheel, just beyond It a dozen men sitting rouiul
a table, while one deals "einyt-un,” while ou the
opposite side are half a dozen faro banks, crowal-
cal with betters, and a glauce at which will no
doiilil satisfy very qiliukly your curiosity, lor tlio
first tiling that catches your eye is a couple ol
revolvers lying very suggestively near the baukcr,
hut ostenstvely used as paper weights for his pile
of money. A look at his face and at the pistols
convinces you that should you detect any trifling
little liberty taken with the cards while dealing,
it would be prudent to keep to yourself any
mild suggestion of unfairness which might rite
to your lips, as you saw him rake in the little
aile you have “coppered on the ace” or “bet flat

[Prom the LaCrosse Democrat,
■aihnman Outrage ou a Negro.
August 38th, 1807, a negro deck hand on the
learner Northern Belle, of the White Collar
Line, one of the boats owned by W. P. David-
son ak Co., was, by order of the aforesaid David
son, President of the liuc ail stenmlmats, or one
of his immediate under officers, most inhumanly
puni.be.1 ns follows :
On the up trip from LaCrosse to St. Paul a
caddy ol tobacco was stolen. Suspicion rested
upon a negro cabin Ixiy us flic thief who hail
taken it. After the bout had goue to St. Paul
and tin: officer in charge had talked witii David-
sen, soon after the boat hail left |X)rt, a rope was
placed around the neck of the man, lie was
suspended from a stanchion and with a great
r«|>e inhumanly hi'iaten on the body .for some
lime and left hanging !
lie was cut down lay a steward of the boat
Indore life was extinct—the boat came down to
Alina, where tlae black mun employed on the
steamer left, Inking witii them the halt murderuii
man, and the steamer came to this port without
her cabin crew.
It is said by the officers inflicting the inhuman
punishment that Mac atrocity was hy order ol
Davidson, from whicli there was no appeal. To
m ike the punishment more human, the “partna;i"
or biiiikmiitc of the cabin Isay wus compelled to
do the beating under penalty ol death!
'V. F. Davidson, President of the While Col
lar boats, is a blatant Abolitionist—a “loyal”
hypocrite who professed great love liar the black
m an—so loyal that during the war he would not
allow newsboys to sell this paper on his limits
unless we would change the tone ot the pn|H-r
and make it ciuiorse Lincoiu’s administration —
•he man who discharged white luhorers, brought
several hundred black men here from the South,
ami marched them through the streets behind u
hand—who cheated the ignorant ones amt ol liiair
hard-earned wages, and left them uncarcd for to
'lie in the |aest bouses here, and up river, of small
pox—wlm pays money to support churches to
secure church influence, and who lias often de
nounced the whipping of black men South.
We give the statement ot (acts witiiout other
comment than this. It this inhuman beating
bad been inflicted on a negro in Texas, or any
other portion of the South, Davidson anal others
ot that party would have howlcal for a week
ova-r the outrage, and demanded a general cam-
bscatioii.

WA8HING MACHINE!!
SPECIAL NOTICE TO THE LADIES.
I T ha* long freen felt and acknowledged that a Washing

heretofore offered to the public. Such a Machine is now
offered without fear of competitiou.

ftl. It take* at lead oue third less soap, and will pay
for Itself every year in the saving of clothing, as it act*
so delicately ou the fabric* that bauk bill* can be washed
without breaking—something no other machine cau do.
We manufacture these AMacfiines iu thi* place, and sliall
sell them at
TEN DOLLARS,
the same price they are sold for iu New York. There is
no Washing Machine on the market that cau be bonght
lor even twice the money, aud uo Machine that will com

trial and use, that, iu consideration of it* cheapness, thu
durability of thu Machine, the ease aud quickness of mo*
tiou, the small amount ot soHp required, and thu protec
tion of the clothes, would recommend it toagenerotu
public.
