The Telegraph says:
We yesterday met Joe for the first time, at
the Brown House. We must confess to disap
pointment at the preconceived notions as to his
I'xiks. Instead of finding him a man well ad-
vauced in years, and of Aldermanic proportions,
we found him well bnilt and with little ot tbe
appearance of age.
Joe is a full-blooded negro, very black, and
with all the peculiar facial character of his race
—thick lip* and flat noae. His countenance is a
pleasing one, and we ,were much pleased with
his modest and retiring manner*.
Notwithstanding bis oratorical powers, Joe is
not a good conversationalist, and seems rather
diffident aboot throating hia view* upon those
with whom he is brought into contact, and only
gives bit idea* upon the topic* of tbe day when
interrogated.
He nvore a Convention, but ia in favor 4>l
sending none but good, sound, conservative men
thereto. He doe* not wish to aee hia people
made dnpee of by the Radicals.
Strange to say, Joe is a Northern man, having
been born in Pennsylvania. He claims Nash
ville, Tenn., a* hia home. He did yoeman’s
service in the cause of truth in that State, and
has done much to disabuse tbe mind* of his peo
pie of radical errors in Alabama in the past
month or two.
He will endeavor to do so for tbe colored peo
ple of Macon this afternoon. Hear him.
