Cotton,
The recent very great decline in cotton is as un
expected as it is moat clearly without just cause
or reason. We bad anticipated a alight check—
perhaps a alight falling off in price—when tho
glowing aceounts of the crop prospects which
were ao ioduatrioualy circulated here in August,
reached Liverpool and Manchester. We were
well convinced at that time that our planting
friends were over-estimating tbe product of the
crop, and giving too much promiuence to the. at
best, but fair prospects which tbe month oi Au
gust seemed to indicate. These accounts, high- Mix-d >r Ydlow
ly colored as they were, have been very greatly | Baton—shoulders
exaggerated in the interests of spinners and
speculators, and, combined with other causes,
have produced aucb a decline in prices as to
leave tbe price to-day barely remunerative to the
planter.

Under Ike present circumstances, there seems
ta us lo be bkt one coarse for the planters to
pursue to force tbe price up to a remunerating
figure. Tbey should hold their cotton until at
irost the later and more correct estimates ot the
growing crop can reach the European markets
and produce the proper effect there. By holding
the crop now, they will give additional force to
the gloomy accounts which bare gone forward
