Poor Sambo !—A correspondent of the Jour

loquy between Governor Brown and himaelf:
• How do vou think. Governor, all this politi

and much sooner than is expected,” said he.—
"But, Governor, the negro will continue to be a
source of political and social discord amongst
us. ’ “No, tir In ten years there will be
scarcely a negro in the country.” "Why, Gov

He replied to the question by asking another.—

Beyly to '‘Atlanta.’'
As I seldom see a copy of the Era, the com
munication of "Atlanta" escaped my notice un
til yesterday. He says that alter " speakiog
disparagingly of the other gentlemen,” "he takes
particular pains to bedaub Maj. W. B. Cox with
his slime."
Now, Mr. Editor, let U3 examine what I did
say about Major Cox, and see if every word ot
it is not true. I Mid be occupied the "honorable
and responsible position ol Commissary of Sub
sistence under that boneet man Jim Cummings,”
ibut yon left oft this latter part.) I stated that
bis losses, and sacrifices, and dangers, to which
his position exposed him during the war, caused
him to leave it a “poor man.” He certainly was
a poor man when the war commenced, and I
didn't think a man could make a fortune on
fllSO per month in Confederate money. It is
true that he may pay more taxes than “ Dis
gust,” but “ Disgust ” would be very much dis
gusted if be bad passed through four years of such
a war, and represented more property than he
did at the beginning. “Disgust” would perhaps
lie able to pay a great deal more into the City
Treasury, if he understood the mysteries of
"spiritual combining.” I sa'ul that Major Cox
had been voted a splendid cane by the citizens of
Atlanta, for his popularity and that bewitching
smile. Is not this so? I think it la When
"Disgust" penned his article, he certainly did
nut intend to "bedaub" Major Cox. The article
was written “more in sorrow than in anger,”
and if Major Cox could only realize the deep
mortification which his vote has caused his ad
mirers and friends, be would lose no time in
coming out from among the “Philistines.”
“Atlanta” says that Council will vote “ten
acres to bnild a monument to anybody on the
promise of a million,” and ought to do It My
God! has it come to this, that our h >nor is to be
prostituted for the sake of having money expend
ed here, and that, too, by Yankees ? Is Atlanta
a Southern city or a Yankee metropolis? and if
building monuments to Lincoln is to draw Yan
kees, don’t you suppose it will drive away South
ern gentlemen? God knows, there are few
enough here now without warning away all who
shall desire to come, by such low and servile
prostitution. I know nothing to equal this bold
and unblushing acknowledgment on the part of
"Atlanta,” except what is related of a ceitain
city editor. Capt E. McB. T called on him
nod said: “ Doctor, I got Into a row ; my name
must not appear in your morning report; I like
your paper; here is ten dollars, send the paper
lo my house.” The Editor turued to his fore
man, tad said: “ Leave Captain's name out ot
the report. 1 will leave anybody’s name out for
ten dollars.” Bo, let it be said of the Atlanta
Council, that they will build monuments to any
body if the mouey shall be “ expended here.”
“ Atlanta ” says that my attack was “ sneak
ing and cowardly.” Here, once for all, let me
kksure “ Atlanta ” that the gentleman who wrote
over the signature of “ Disgust ” never does any
thing “ sneaking” or “cowardly.” He is entire
ly responsible to all who may deem themselves
"(tended, and bis name U cheerfully at the dia
lusal ol any who may desire it, cither tor “ le
gsl or personal satislaclion.” Dikoust.
