Such and so good were these ministers ot God, who gave up their uoble lives lor the lost cause. The Sumner Ncandal—The Cause «»f ike Separation ol Sumner and His Wire, A public man sometimes becomes so public that liis private affairs command a publicity which it would be an affectation of the press udt to notice. Hence I send vou the following -- Not two years ago the long known bachelor, Charles Sumner, Became a Benedict. A highly educated and in many respects au accomplished man, of good manners and better appearance, naturally enough, he stood high among the la dies of Boston, and he had no difficulty in win ning the hand ol a widow (from one ot the F. F. ol Boston) who sacrificed no inconsiderable joint ure in marrying him. The honeymoon had all Iheapparent chatin that honeymoons usually have, when .Mrs. Sumner went with her hus bund to Washington, and new scenes ensued.— Among the accomplished men composing the Diplomatic Corps in Washington, was Baron Holstein,of Prussia, whom Lite Prussian King had attached to the Prussian Legation there “to spy- out the land." Naturally enough he courted the acquaintance of Charles Sumner, the Chairman of the Committee on Foreign nttairs in the Scn- v fit ate, who at a dinner party introduced his wile to the Baron, (and who was placed beside her at dinner. An acquaintance ensued, and a friend ship followed, such os naturally and honorably springs up between the sexes with kindred tastes and aspiration. The B trait attended to the la dy in matinees and soil,vs, and in other public places, and occasionally escorted her from the Sou ate, where both hid been to hear the Senator speak. Mr. Sumner hemming iisplcascd with this acquaintanceship— lor it cannot he properly called an inti macy—wrote a l-*tirr to Barott Holstein, iu which, while complaining of it, report says he insinuated something not honorable to the wile. The B&rou wrote Imek a letter, in which, iu sub stance, lie said there was no cause of ofieuse whatever—be had been polite lo the Madame,us he was to other ladies of similar accomplish ments, and nothing had ever happened which propriety or good taste forbade. But if the Sen ator was not satisfied with that, he was ready to give him any satisfaction as a man ol honor de manded. This correspondence was the beginning and end ot part first; but Mr. Sumner, report says, then became cool to bis wife, and the lady aud the Baron became more reserved in their inter course. Then Mr. Sumner, as Chairman of our Committee of Foreign Afiairs, wrote to the Prussian Miuister of Foreign Affairs, the distin guished Bismarck, tlmt if lie (Bismarck; would recall the Baron lie (Sumner) would bo obliged. The idiot Bismarck yielded lo the potential po sition of the American chairman of Foreign Af iairs, ami the Baron was recalled to Berlin. Mrs. Sumner next became acquainted with this correspondence, and naturally enough, was indignant beyond all power ol description. In dignation naturally rested upon that part of the correspondenre which, it was alleged, touched her honor. The end ol all this is, Hint Mrs. buumer Los gone her way to Fill ope—tiieircom mon establishment in W'lcdiingluu being given no. and another is taken by the Senator for the winter. 1 lime is some scandal afloat beyond nil this, relating both to the Senator aud the lady—such as may Is; expected |rom early denouements in -urh a marriage affair—but the basis of Hie re- ‘ What I ports in Boston arc sueli as I send you. hav- —------ ■- ■ ...
