Oi.t* Maiuh.—A sprightly writer expresses his opinion of old maids In the billowing manner: I am Inclined to think that many of litn satiri cal aspersions east upon old maid's fnll more to their credit than is generally imagined. Is a woman remarkably neat in her person 7 She will certainly lie nn old maid. Is she particularly reserved in her intercourse with the other sex ’ 1 She has all the sipicamlshncss of an old tnnid. Is she frugal in her expenses and exact in her domestic concerns ? Shu is cut out for an old maid. And it she is humane to the animals about her, nothing can save her from the appel lation of an “old maid.” In short, I have al ways found that neatness, modesty, economy, and humanity are the ncvcr-fnlHng characteristics of that terrible creature—“old maid.” MImouIlullwousi A<1 vci*t iMoiticnts. M Iseetlaneotts ArtvertlaoiuentH. HARDWARE AND IRON. As the three vi'srs°oi niiHWtiing begun to expire, the lieaiitilul inmig lady tumid herself besieged at ‘Thu Knr- 'esl' bv numerous visitors. Ot these three were favorites with the lair Mrs. Skelton, ol whom Ur. Thomas Jefferson was one. The tradition tuns that the pr. tensions ol the rivals wore do- riiieil either by the musical accomplishments of the veiling counsellor, or by the tears ol his op ponents. The tale is differently related. One version is, that the two imtortunate gentlemen encountered each other on Mrs. Skelton’s dnor- |,tu hearing Mr. Jefferson’s violin and voice accompanying the lady in a pathetic song, gave up the contest thenei torth, and retired without enu ring, convinced that the affair w as beyond their control. The other story is that all three met nt the j.Mt, ami agreed that they would take turns.— Mr. Jefferson entered tirst, and the tones of the Inly in singing with hi r companion deprived the listeners ol all hope. However this may be it is certain that the tieautitul widow consented to become Mrs. Jefferson; and on the 1st of Jnntm- ty, 1777, there was a grand leslivai at the "For est." Friends and kindred assembled front fur ami near; there was frolicking ami dancing al ter tlie abundant old fashion, and we liml Irom the bridegroom’s note hook that tho servants ami tiddlers received their fees Irom his especial picket. It snowed without, but within nil was mirth and enjoyment, in the light and warmth of tho j great log tires, roaring in honor of the occasion. | Soon after the |ierforinance of flic ceremony the , bridegroom ami his bride sc", out in bis carriage ; fur Monticcllo, where Mr. Jefferson had com- i mrnced building in 1709, just belore the* destine- ! lion by tire of his patrimonial house ot “Shad- , well."' The journey was not to end without ad- j ventures. As they'advanced towards the moon- ; tains the snow increased in depth, ami dually they wore compelled to leave the carriage and j proceed upon their wav on horseback. Stopping to rest at iMenticim, the seat of Col. I Carter, where they Immd, however, no one bin an overseer, they left it at sunset, resolutely bent j upon reaching Monlicello helore night. It wus eight miles distant, and the road, which was rattier a mountain bridle path tlntii an liooesi highway, was encumbered witli snow nearly three leet deep. We may fancy lliesensatious ol the newly married bride at Hie chili np|iear- ance of the landscape as she passed along the snow; bat she was a woman of courage and good sense, and did not care lor inconvenience, j It was late when they arrived, and a cheerless White reception awaited them—or rather there was no 1 reception at all. The tires were all out, tlieser- 1 mills had gone to bed, and the place whs us j dark and sileut as tin* grave. Conducting Ids | wile to the little pavilion, which was thu only I part of the house habitable at the time, Mr. Jci- lersou proceeded to do tiiu honors. On a shell behind some bonks, part of a bottle ol wine wus discovered, and this lurmed Hie supper nf the ' bridegroom and the bride. Far horn being an noyed or discontented by the rcceplion, however, it only served lor u topic of jest and laughter.— The young lady was merry and light hearted as a binl, und sent her deal voice ringing through the dreary little pavilion us gayly as she had ever done in the elieel lul drawing-room ol “The i Forest.” Thus tho long hours' nt the w inter night lied away winged with laughter, merriment aa 1 song. The vigil was a mirlhtul incident | rather than atrial of tln-ir eipianimity. They; were voting, and they had j list been married.— When hands art) clasped and hearts heat close iog< iher, there is very little gloom in darkness, aid winter nights are not (add. This little moral sentiment will not, 1 hope, be criticised as too romantic for the “dignity ol history.” 1' doubt- ! less explains how a young lady and gentleman, both used to every comfort and luxury, found tin-gloomy little pavilion in the midst ol three b et of snow, neither .i irk nor cold, in that Jan uary night long ago 7 /» COILS MANILLA ROPE.
