Greono Hillock, who tlicil oil the 20tli in- litatii, at liia birtU place, Guilford, Connecticut, lived ao long that lie had seen moat of the triend* of Ida youth drop down ationt him. Yet some of these are preserved, to whom the news of hi* death ha* come wish the peculiar poignant pang tbit only the aged feel when such companions jieriah, aud which the aged cannot hope for lime to wear away. The larger number ot hiscoun- iiyrneu knew Mr. Halleck, and will not fail to cherish hia memory, wan American pool. These also retain a vague recollection of bis having been at one time in charge of John Jacob Astor’s business attain. But these do not know much of the individual character, the personal charm, tho social spirit, of the man once a member of that goodly company which included Irving, Coop er. Paulding, Lang and Drake, and had been a welcome guest at the home* of the worthiest merchants and public men of the early part of this century to the present time. He waa born seventy-two year* ago, July 8,1795. He entered ns clerk at the bank house of Jacob Barber when he was eighteen years of age. There he made the connection with Mr. Astor, which Idled un til alter that gentleman's death, who named him a* one of the truateeaof the Astor Library. This position he continued to hold, although, in 1M9 he retired from all active biulnepa and went to live in Guilford. In 1818, his lines to “ Twilight,” the earliest in date ot hia collected poems, ap peared in the New York Earning Pott. Duriug the two succeeding years ho assisted Joseph R. id man Drake in contributing tn« -atnaumm series of " Croaker" papers lo the same Journal. The ill health ot Drake compelled the discon tinuance ot those papers, and hit death in the billowing year was commemorated by Halleck in the poem, beginning: Green be the turf above thee. Friend nr my better day. t None knew thee bat to lave thee. Nor name the# bat to praise. The poem of "Fanny”—a satire on tho follies, lashion and public character* of that early day— waa completed within three weeks in 1819.— U created almost as great a sensation in metropolitan society as Byron's "English Bards Qi W> and Scotch Reviewers did in London and Ed- ! • wr * l > lnhurg. Copies were demanded aud circulated iu manuscript after the original edition, which was not immediately republished in Amario», had bee . exhausted.
