••The Holy Opera.”
1 lie newspapers, altered and profane, the Eug

attention to tlie invasion of our churches by
"peratic singers. Even our sober-minded triemls
r the Philadelphia Presbyterian, under the sig
nificant head of" Shameful," and on the author
in' ot some other paper, says:
A few Sundays ago, in one ot the New York
Presbyterian churches, the piece of the regular
"rima donna we* temporarily eupplied, during
her absence, by another. The new voice was
the subject of conversation, ae some of the wor
shipers beguiled their homeward way, thus;
“ Who wsa she?” “ Who cau she be? ” The
answer wee; ** She is a young, timid girl, quite
in accustomed to such a congregation. Did you
ii"tico bow she trembled?’ It came out the :
next day that the timid young girl was one ot
the performers iu the Black Crook.
riie " Black Crook ” is something or other,
we knew not what, that is going on nightly in
■ ne of our minor theaters, and it is said to be the
Mi.jst indecent of spectacles, but just suited to
'iw present taste, of theater-goers. They have,
