<C Stntin*1 of Augusta propounds, among others,
the following queries,to Db. H. V. M Mrt.t.ten,mo
ot the delegates trout this Senatorial district iu
the hybrid concern called a Stato Convention, re
cently assembled in this city, and to others in
tiiat body who voted for the adoption of the re
solution of thanks to Ueneral Pope, introduced
by Dr. Miller.
“ We ask,” says our Augusta cotemporary.—
' Dr. Miller and his white associates (we mean
those who are not doubly dyed iu Radicalism) il
they approve the wisdom which so Gerryman
dered the Slate as to givo the negroes control ol
Sfl out of 44 diatricts, and the power to elect 104
out of the 190 delegates to the Convention ?
Do they approve the “ wisdom and justice”
of the removal from office of Augustas Reese as
Judge of the Ocmulgee District, and the ap-
liointment In his place and stead of N. Green
Foster V
Do they approve the wisdom which selects for
the Mayoralty of ouu of the largest cities in the
Slate a man who, by the return of a grand jury
of his own selection has been guilty of perjury V
Do they approve the wisdom and justice ol
the infamous order which requited all the civi,
officer* in the State not to oppose the Sherman
Bills or lose their offices?
Do they approve the wisdom aud justice of the
order oppointing ignorant negroes and carpet
bag Yankee* as registrars in the different coun
ties of the Stale?
Do they approve the wisdom and justice of the
order requiring the Judges of all our courts to
draw equally from the black*and whitesin mak
ing up their Jury lists?
Do they approve the wisdom and justice of the
order requiring ail the civil and military officer*
in the State to publish their legal advertisements
only In the scalawag and negro paper* T
Do they approve the wladom and Justice of the
yarioui orders removing from office gentlemen
.whoie only offence was found in their refusal to
bow the knee to Baal and give their support to
the Sherman-Sbellabarger Bills?
Do they approvo the wisdom and Justice ol
the arreati of hundreds of white men who, with
out legal accusation or warrant, have been drag
ged from their homes, covered with mannehs
and placed In felons' dens ?
~ Do they approve the wisdom and justice and I
moderation of the order which prohibits the
Slat* University from receiving the payment of
a debt due it by the Stale unless the trustees will
remove the lion. 1). II. Hill lrom his chair its
professor of law ?
Do they approve thu wisdom and justice aud
moderation ol his attempt to exile some of the
purest and best men in the State, and mu/.rle the
Freae because it would not approve the terms
offered in the misculled Reconstruction Bills ?
Wo repeat, docs Dr. Miller and the twenty
odd white men in the piebald Convention who
are styled by courtesy Conservatives, approve
these and a hundred like acts, which we could
mention if wc had timo and space? If they
approve and thank Dictator Pope for these and
similar act*, wc tell them that they do not speak
the voice of Gcorgiu. We know some no n in
that "body of death" who, in former years, were
esteemed gentlemen and patriots. Among ite m 1
we wer* wont to include Hie sptcad-eagle of the i
mountains." * * * * * *
The foregoing interrogatories ure timely and
pertinent. Will Dr. Miller answer them ? Can j
he do ao, satisfactorily to the people ol the Slate
ol his own race and linougc; to the press of the
Htate which ha* been so outraged by General
Fope'a " Order 40 to III* own convictions in
regard to that "oroer," as expressed Iteforn he
took hie seat as a delegate of the body iu which
liu introduced hit resolution of thanki to General
Pope ? “Wo pause for a reply."
The I'ncoualilulluital Convention.
Thia body has adjourned until the Bill day ol
January. Better for the people of Georgia, it
had adjourned forever. Called together uuder
the " unconstitutional military acts," for the
avowed purpose of framing a Constitution for
the Bute, their work could have been done in
ten days, aa well as ten weeks. They met on
Mouduy the 0th Instant, and have, therefore, been
in neaalon twelve working daye; and what have
they done T Absolutely nothing. The Aral week

the Convention haa la-on in w-ssiou, a score of
ordinances or more have been rcjHiiU'd, with the
prolcMed object of giving rclicl to a people al

We copy it from the LouitcUlt Journal ot the

stem logic, aud much that will force the reader
to arrive at the inevitable conclusion the writer
of the article docs, that “ General Grant belong*
to the radicals," (hat their "title to him ia clear
and unquestionable.” Thi* the people of the
South—we mean the u'.Kite people of the South
—should begin to understand. The whole coun

game he ha* been playing i* now exposed ; he
ha* unwarily shown hi9 hand , he holds no in

National Democracy ot the North and West in

There are other financial matters So lie settled
by Congress; the national hank question, the
contraction question, and, above all, tho question
ol taxation. Congress is compelled to listen to
'.lie demand of the country for measures ot econ
omy and retrenchment iu public expenditures,
ami to a reduction of the whole amount of reve
nue, external and internal, to three hundred mil-
linns of dollar!*, or, nt the most, three hundred
and fifty. That this can be dono with greet ad
vantage to public nnd private interest, there is uo
room lor doubt.
For the present, all financial measure* are in
suspense, lint after the holidays it may bo ex
pected that their consideration will be resumed

The Valley of the Shadow of Death.
A correspondent ot tlic Cincinnati Commercial
writes from the Headwaters ot Yellow Stone
Montana Territory:
“Out ot this plain, or vollny, rather, which
extends over on area of fifty miles issue a million
sharp jets ot bluish-while flame, interspersed
witli fitful puffs of pearly vapor, which sail up
ward in endless turbinated convulsions, until,
reaching a high altitude they dissolve aud be
come blendea with the fluctuating cloud which
hang* over tbe valley, os if te shield it from
mortal eyes. The plain ia dotted with innumer
able tumpa, from whouoe these vapory aud fiery
columns are emitted. In their formation they
resemble miniature volcunoe*. Fire spring* like
these may be found in Chius; and the geysers
ot Iceland are but raaulta of voleanio action ol
the same nature, though of greater force and
power, than the Hot Bpnnga in tbe valley of tho
Yellowstone. One cannot help thinking that
fiercest Are* rage somewhere below the external
envelope of the plain to thus fan and force flame*
above the surtace. A gentleman and a meant,
connected with our party, ascribe* these igneous
streams to gases escaping from a "veiled boll.”
Another speciality of volcanic action may be
observed by a cloeer investigation of tho conical
•tills which loom up lrom the surface in every
direction. Though there are no deep craters In
their summits, it is au easy matter to detect a
gentle hollow in each, more or lees deep, covered
with crumbling particles of lava-like rock. The
base amt sides Are also thickly strewn with the
like porus deposits—some ol very large size, like
enormous cindcry cakes, the refuse of a foundry
furnace. A sulphurous odor is iu the atmos
phere. reminding one of our companion* of hi*
experience ni a choke-damp.
Htirromuling the entire plain are lofty calcif-
urous rocks, eroded and skeletonized by notion
ul ruin* or shifting bodies of witter, which now
hear thu apiieiiruncu of inverted pyramids,
prism*, nnd various other configuration*. Bu
sbies preparing iletritut, which lay piled In heaps

corroded and dismantled the roe* that ono

which luy scattered around in the most intle-
