48 fWafcots' gtlfgcjt# TBOB BDteL TIip following pretty Duet is extracted from a new Opera, uoxv in preparation at one of our Theatres. Wo uinicrstnpd it to he from the fertile pen of Geo. ?. Moiaus, Esq. editor of the New Vorlt Mirror. A'. V. paper. WILLIAM. The day is now dlttvnlng, love, l ied is the night— I go like the morning, love, Cheerful and height. Then iidiett, clearest Ellen, When evening is near, I’ll visit thy dwelling, hot-line love is here. ELLEN. Oh romc where the fountain, love, Tranquilly flows, Beneath the green mountain, love, Seek for repose. . Here the days ol our childhood, In love’s golden beam, 'Along the ino.-i and tfie wildwood. Passed on like a dream. I must away. * WILLIAM. Oh grant me thy smile, love, , Tis ho|ie’s brilliant ray. With evening aspect me. KM tv. To the moment ne true, And mc.y angels protect tlice. EOTII. Sweet Ellen; adieu. Dear William, adieu. DELUSIONS OF HOPE. Like a foam on the billow, When it swells o’er the deep; Like a tear on the pillow, When wc sigh while we sleep: Like the syren that sings, We re’ercan tell where, Is the toftd hope that brings Tlie night of despair. Like the star-light of gladness When it gleums In denth’s eye; Like the meteor of madness In the spirit's dark sky; v Like the zephyrs that perish With the breath of their birth, Are the Impel that wc cherish While prison'd on earth. Wont of good Husbandry.—At the Cattle show at Concord, N. H. premiums were a- TV u-iieil lor tlie host Farms. In relation to one of them the viewing committee, in tiieir re* pu:\, make the following remark:—“This farm aj (tears to be cultivated with great cure and much judgement in agriculture; but the com* Jiiii've are of opinion, that the owner is in faith In one essential particulat; and they hope that iudi'cci allusion to it w'dl ho sufficient foi hint to correct the cno". There is no cotn- modity on a farm so useful and so pleasing to the farmer—nothing in this life, on which he can so safely rest Ins hopes of comfort in fu ture years, as a company of healthy, robust and promising boys. A farmer rarely su cceeds well without a wife. A solitary journey is al ways a tiresome and cheerless one.” Respectable. Aneesfry.—Do Vcrto, in his history of the Kn glttsof Malta, relates, that a Mahometan leader" of an insurrection being questioned in the presence ofltis army as to the grntiT.eness ofltis descent—drawing his sword, exclaimed, “Hero is nty father and mother, and here (scattering n handful of Gold among his Soldiers)—are all my relations and proge nitors.” The genealogy of the chieftain was highly approved of. Bad Singing.—There was something of novelty, it is true, but not less of reason, in tlie proceeding of a lato esteemed minister of New England, who, at the close of a badly sung ps 'lm, read another to the choir, saying, “Yon must try again, for it is impossible to preach af ter such singing.” Gen. Lee, being one night at Albany, drink- Bg w ne with an old Scotch officor, when ho be ep n to bo mellow, told his companion that ho had one fault, which he begged him to overlook, which was to abuse the Scotch when ho was in liquor. “In truth,” replied the officer, “I shall roadily forgivo your fault, if you will over look mine—-it is whenever I hear any pet son impertinently abusing Scotland or Scotchmen, drunk or sober, I canno. refrain from laying my cane soundly over his shoulders. Now I will roadily pardon your fault if you will pardon mine.” This seasonable hint made the Gen. verypo- lito the remainder of the evening. It was well observed by tho sarcastic Greek, that laws resembled spider’s webs, which great flies broke through, while small ones were en tangled. We soo this every day. A lawyer, in a lato action for battery, told the Judge, in legal phraseology, That the de fendant beat his client with ti certain wooden instrument.called an irpn pestle. Mr. J. Day, (lie optician, who complained at a Police, Office, on Mopdav, of being ta ken in by an English Greek, should have seen through the latter’s designs. Sir Waller Scott is now living at private lodgings at Edinburgh, and working hard at the pen, that ho may pay in full every one of his creditors. At Molksham Wilts, whose population a- xnnunts to about 4,000, there are now, 2,000 dependent on the poor rates for support. Mr. FtU, a Leicester magistrate, was block ed off the bench last week, by a publican's wife, for refusing to license her husband.— This is a mostunf ccnccd action. Six coaches run between Edinburgh and Leith; they perform 62 trips from each place daily, by which means 664 passengers may be conveyed to and from either place each day, 3,984 a week, and£07,l68 a year.
