FOR TIM: Tr.I.ROItAPlt.
I saw n mniden pain anfi lair,
The lily graced hep snowy brow.;
The rose that bloomed in b.autv there,
Alas ! alas! whore is it now 1
-Disease had marred its bounteous glow.
And blauSiicd the brilliant hnc of youth;—
The strains of glee, once tvotit to flora
1'ioin soeroes pure as hollowed truth,
No more were there. Hcrfee.ble voice
Was raised in holy fervent prayer;
Whose balm secured to, her heart rejoice
And beam celestial sweetness (hero:
When, from her lips that sacred inline—
“My Father 1 . <>, thy will he done !—
Breathed forth, methought its holy flutnc
A type ot parity divine.
llotv truly mild is maiden’s eye
To licavco upraised in pious prayer!
When upward her pure glances By,
Ethcriai eloquence is there. ■
To souls like, this alone is given
True pleasure for tint good designed
On earth, to teach the sweets of Heaven—
fairest celestial joys of mind.
The heart so formed by skill divine—
Tire holy love of heaven revealing,—
Around its kindred hearts entwine
Jn calm delight of mental feeling.
AiiMtl, such Dowers too soon decay—
A moment blossom, fade, and die—
As transient sunbeams pas,, away,

FAITHLESS NELLY GRAY;
A PATHETIC UAlil.AP.
Ben Battle was a soldier hold,
And used towur’salunns;
But u cannon Bali look oil'his legs.
So he laid down his arms I
Now as they bore ldr.i off the field,
Said he, "let others shOot,
For here I leave toy second leg,
And the ‘Forty second Foot!’"
Tile army surgeons made him limbs;
Said he, “They’re only pegs;
But there’s as wooden members nui
As represent my legs!"
quite
Now Ben .he loved a pretty maid.
Her name v.ns Nelly Gray;
So he went to pay her his devoirs,"
When he’d devour’d his pay!
But when lie call’d on Nelly Gray-,
* She made him quite a scolf;
And when .lie saw his wooden legs,
Began to luliu them olf!
“O Nelly Gray! O Nelly Gray!
Is this you love so warm f
The love that loves a scarlet coat
' Should be more uniform!"
Suid she, “I loved a soldier once,
For ho wus blithe and brave;
But 1 will never have a mail
Whh both legs its the grave!
Before you had those timber toes.
Your love 1 did allow;
But then, you know, you 3tnnd upon
Another fooling now!”
“O Nelly Gray ! O Nelly. Gray!
For nil vo,w . r .
At duty’s call 1 left my legs
In Budajos’s breaches
•'Why then,” said she, “you’ve lost the feet
Of legs In war’s alarms,
And now you cannot wear your slices >
Upon your feats of arms!"
“O fulsc and fickle Nolly Gray!
1 know why you refuse;
Though I’ve no feet, some other man
Is standing in my shoes! . _ .
I wish 1 ne’er hod seen your face;
But now a long turcwell I
For you will he my death—alus!
You will not be my Nell /”
Now when he went front Nelly Gray,
His heart so heavy got,
And life was such a burthen grown,
It made him take a knot!
So round bis melancholy neck,
A rope he did entwine,
And, for ids second time in life,
Enlisted in the Line!
One end he tied around a beam,
And then removed his pegs-;-
And ns his legs were olf, of course
lie soon was off bis legs.
And there he hung till he was dead,
As any Nall iu town;
For though distress hud cut him up,
It could not cut him down!
A dozen men sat on his corpse,
To find out why he died;
Aud they hurried Ben in four cross roads,
With a stake in his inside! .
