THE GREEK SONG OF TUlt'MHL
Rv Wiit.iAM n. s IMXIS, Ji;.v.
In I'li* fri'o mountain nir nur limner is streaming,
The valleys arc criming with many a sntitnl,
Bright arins in the lilii" sl>v iiflleav'n i»r * gleaming.
And the tnud-tongued l’ambourgi* is thuutl'riiig
run id.
Jin lunger the dark rnhe nf silence and anguish,
OVrspreatSs with its mildew the home of the pnsf;
But the hearts of th.c mighty I ^ destined to languish,
Have kindled to freedom anu vengeance at last!
Triumph! the slave wears Ids fetters no longer!
Vengeance! f ir murder, indign'ly, hate.
Glory! the triumph is not (o the stronger—
Freedom lias fought with the red arm of Fate!
By the ldood we have lo«t. by tile blood of our fathers,
"Thu remembrance of Glory in nges lung (led,
One triumphs We'll keep, till eternity gathers
Her harcest of years, or descends to the dead!
No 1 ttiger in sorrow oar maidens repining,
Shall sigh the bright ,| iwning of being away.
But with eyes nf pure light, like their own blue sky
shining,
S'lfill meet o ir retur.i from the fight, ever gay.
Ill theirhow’r lit eve. by a tyrant oppress'd not.
Shall they weave tlni bright garland of song for the
brave;
And tell how the heart that by freedom is ldess'd not,
Tim’ —leased from its fetters, is still hut a slave.

THE BROKEN HEART.
She sank by si iw degrees away,
As gentle flw’rets droop and die,*
When severed from tlm parent spray;
tbit yet within her laded eye
There was expression, non though high;
So much of lienv’n with earth was mix’d,
That as she yielded up her breath,
Death seem’d to have no triumph tiiere,
For, old she triumph'd over death.
'She fell, ns falls the lonely dove,
Wh-n sever’d from its beauteous mate;
Vet thinking more of him whose love
lieu made her own heart desolate.
Than of her own bright visions crossed,
AH for which life is valued, lost.
She sank by slow degress away,
So calmly from her sorrows borne,'

Co'hin Chins.—The women arc, in trcncr-

gent, laborious, nmH'ullow all sorts of occupa
tions. In the B izars, nml in the large cities,
•here are 50 women to one man! ami it is re
in ok able, that in general, there are born 5 times

ns'ngle word has often several meanings—tho
Vo-d Mtt, lor instance, signifies at the same
time, a mother, tho chin, the sea, a goat, tho
devil, a spirit, &c. Corruption reigns iu all
classes, from the lowest to the highest not ex
cepting the king htm-elf. Lawsuits, notwith
standing appearances, are generally decided in
favor of those who make the greatest presents.
C tpinl crinto is pan shed hy decapitation. It
is surprising to observe, with what indifference
criminals go to punishment—they commonly
smoke their segar, as if they were going to a
party of pleasure. Criminal wotiieu of high
rank, are trampled tinder foot hy elephants.—

China.—The Ministers Scu Tsun-Yih, and
Yuen Seen, reebndy dared to declare to the
Emperor, Tavco Kwang, that administration in
the excessive expenses of tho Seraglio of his
majesty would amount in ono year, to more than
the sale of tho income of the Stato in ten years
—the ministers added, that by a wise economy,
talents and virtues would bo encouraged, and
concluded in those words:—“Thu Ministers of
his Majos'y, were they to he condemned to
lose their heads, or to bo cast ditto a kettle of
boding oil, would not shrink front doing their
duty.” His Majesty, penetrated with the de
votion of his Ministers, deigned to declare,
th tt thoy woro vory faithful, full of lovo for
their country, and worthy by their virtues, to
bring to min.-i, the great Ministers of ancient

St. Patrick's Dai/.—This festival was ce
lebrated on Saturday with much cordiality and
jay.- Public dinners were given at the different
hotels, aud at Nibht’s a large party of seventy
or eighty sat down to a superb banquet. How
excellent the wines and ltow pleasant the com
pany must have been may be gathered front
the fact, thur the sounds of revelry, song and
speech making, saluted our cars as we passed
the doors, at a fearfully late period of the even
ing; and in various quarters of the town, inha
bited by the sons of Erin, the evidences of
hearty (though temperate) enjovtuent were a-
bundmly manifest. It is creditable to the
feelings and also to the judgment of our Irish
citizens, that on this (ilieir greatest) national
anniversary, amidst a general rejoicing, there
wore no signs of disturbance or quarrel.—New
