“ALL FOOLS' DA Y.”
TO MV MISTRESS.—April I, 1827.
Gentle, modest, beauteous, fair one,
On whom I often gnze with rapture;
To what sweet dials shall I r.ompareone
So much above the strain of laughter?
Yet, on this jocund day, when nil
Arc privileges! to quia their friends,
A lover may thy charms recall .
In some rare dish his fancy lends.
Thy honied words, llint softly (low
In sweetest music to my cats,
Shall he a pie—not stiffed with straw!—
Hut apples, if you will—or peurs.
Tile erust so pleasant to the taste,
So cron and rusilv broken through;
I.ifce wom.m’s vow when mndc in haste,
Delicious, hut as brittle too!

The brilliant lu«tro of thine eyes?
A Syllabub uf Sudst No; though rare,

TIfE LAST PARTING.
There is a time when the soul is sad,
And the heart has more Ilian wonted feeling;
When the eye doth lose the lustre it had,
And the tear doth flow, in silence,stealing;
There is n time, to the pure miml given,
To wander from earth, and fix in heaven.
There is n moment—'tis when we stand
ltesidc (lie conch, and watch the piilotv
Of one we love, and grasp the hand.
That soon must rest beneath Hie willow—
THere is a moment—we fain would rise,
And follow the lov'd one lo the skies.
I have seen old age in its last decay,
By the winds of eighty winters wasted,
I have seen gay youth in tile bloom of May,
With all its brightest prospects blasted;
And I have felt within me then,
A wish to forsake the aboJes of men.
We stood, a circle of mourning friends,
For the loss of a dear, fond parent, weeping;
Fhe -miles—it is over—the spirit ascends,
Rut the smile remains, on her pale check sleeping;
Till tho tics of life shall part forever,
I cannot forget that moment—never.
The sun had gone to his ocean bed,
• And the winds in their island caves were reposing;
All was tranquil round, ns the sleep of the dead,
When twilight came over,yet scarcely disclosing
A star to the eye—save the bright star of even,
That shone to direct the departed to Heaven.
Thege is a moment—'tis when we stand.
Beside the conrh. and watch the pillow
Of one we love, and grn«p the hand
That soon must rest beneath the willow—
There is a moment—sve fat:- would rise,
And follow the lov’d one to the skies.

DESTRUCTION OF INSECTS. '
As tho season of vegetation approaches, a
remark upon the application of tobacco wator,
in tho destruction of insects, may wot bo amiss.
In-tho process of preparing tobacco for use, a
liquid is expressed from it, which is very cheap
and highly destructive to animal life. This,
mixed with three to five parts wator, is found
to he an effectual remedy for the aphis, cater
pillars‘and similar insects which infest fruit
trees. - - " „
Tobacco is much more properly applied to
the destruction of insects, than of stomachs.
From the London Mechanics’ Magazine. '
On the application of Brandy to tcet Feet.
—The custom of pouring brandy into boots or
shoes, when tho feet are wet, with a view of
preventing perstms from taking cold, is a prac
tice which is founded on prejudice and miscon
ception, and often proves fatal, by bringing on
inflammation and constant obstruction in the
bowels. This practice is adopted upon tho
suppositidn, that because spirits when swallow
ed, excite an universal warmth, and restore
the circulation of the extremities, they must do
tho same when applied to the extremities them
selves; hut tho reverse happens. Fluids, when
evaporating, produco cold, and the lighter and
moro spirituous the fluid, tho more quickly it
evaporates, aud the greater is the degree of
coin generated. This may bo proved by a
very simple experiment:—If one hand bo wet
ted with spirits, and the other with water, and
both held up to dry in tho air, tho hand wot
ted with tho spirit will feel considerably cold
er than the other. Whatever danger, there
fore, arises from cold or damp feet, it is gener
ally enhanced by ihc practice alluded :o. Tho
best way to prevent danger from wot clothes,
is to keep if possible in motion, nnd to take
care not to got near a fire, or any qtker wnrm
place, sons to occosjon a sudden heat, till some
linte after you havo been enabled to procure
ary clothes. * J. C.

All Colton they inuy receive will bo fully insured
