THE MINSTREL.
TO a THE HACOX TELEOItAPIT.
TIIE MAID OF THE SPRING.
The sun was glowing fiery hot,
The ground was parch’d and dry;
The trees n shade afforded not,
As through the dust jogg’d I.
When tripping from n winding path,
(Perilling with hushes durk.
O'erlmng t
lass ramc singing forth,
a blithe as any lurk.
A prcttjy
A wooden pall was on her crown,
Filled from the fountain pure;
The cooling drops ran trickling down,
Amidst her tlaien hair.
And, floating like a little ship,
A mimic sea upon,
A pretty gourd was cruising round,
Within the burnish’d can.
“My burning thirst let me allay,
My charming bluc-cycd maid'*-*’
I her addressed—''“Indeed you may,”
The damsel smiling said.
But Love was perch’d upon the bowl,
And drew his fatal dart;
And ere my thirst was quench’d, I felt
ills poison reach my heart.
For while the dripping cup I drained,
My eyes were feasting too!
On charms that Venus would not shame,—
O what a neck of snow!
“My thirst you’ve slaked, nh, cruel girl,
But raised a hotter fire!
Through every vein I feel it burn,
With ungovernable ire.
“Those pouting lips must quench the flame,
Enkindled by your eyes;
As “seanents’s oil" their victim
That else by poison dies.”

SONG.
SCPPOSEO TO EE WRITTEN BY MBS. HUZZY.
“Nay, twine the heuth-flower wild for me,
It best Will suit my blighted lot;
For I am flung neglectcaly 4 *
Abroad, where fostering iovins not;
And roses on my aching brow
Too soon would lose their blushing glow;
While on my throbbing bosom laid,
The lily’s bloom in death would fade!
Enwreath the folds ^Beauty’s hair
With the white jet'mine stars; their snow
Will gleam in purer seeming there,
And grace on loveliness bestow.
Their delicate frail life will be
Breath’d forth In sweet iuxuriancy
On the rich tresses, where they lie
Embalm’d in their' own od’rous sigh!
To the young seraph Hope be given,
In homage to heT soft eyes' hue, •
The violet bud, which stole from heaven
Its matchless depth of starlight blue.
Entwine, the lyre of song to shade,
The scented myrtle’s shining braid;
But weave for me that flower alone
In wildness on the desert thrown!”
