THE MINSTREL.
The Lirrrpool 'Mercury say;. the following lines
are ascribed to the late Clen. Washington:
- \ THE IRISHMAN.
The savage loves his native shore,
- Tho’ ride the soil nnd rhill the air;
Well then may Erin's son adore
Their Isle, thut nature formed so fuir;
What flood reflects a shore so sweet,
As glorious Iloyne, or pastoral Haim?
And who a friend nr foe can meet,
So generous as an Irishmanl
His hand is rash, his heart is worm,
Hut principle is still his guide;
None more repents a deed of harm,
Aud none foi gives with nebler.pridc;
Ha mqybe dup'd, but won't he dar’d;
Fitter to practice than to plan,
lie ably earns nil poor reward,
And spends it like un Irishman.
If poorer strnnae, foryou he'll pay,
And guard you cafe where you may be;
If yon’re a stranger while yon stay,
His collage bolds a jubilee?
His inmost soul he will unloelt,
And if lie may your secrets scan,
Vo or confidence he sporns to mock,
For faithful is ah Irishman!
By liono*-bound, jnsvoe or weal,
What e'er she bids he dares to do;
Tempt him with bribes, or if you fail.
Try him in fire, you'ii find him true;
He seeks not safety, let his post
He where it oii.;ht in danger’s van;
An If tho field of fame he lost.
'Tn ill not be by an Irishman.
Erin! lov'd land, from age to age,
He then more blessed, more fam'd and free!
Slay pence he yours, and should you wage
Defensive wars, reap victory;
Way plenty bloom in every field,
’ And gentle breezes sweetly fan,
And generous smiles serenely shield
The hrrast of every Irishman.

HORRIBLE—IF TRUE.
We have another prime horror, with which
to regale our readers—and would to heaven the
details of the transaction were a outer of
question. But alas! for human nature,'they are
established bv decision of a court of justice, and
of the truth of the s’ory, there can be no pos-
iiblo doubt. We heard the particulars some
time since, from 8 highly respectable ami
meritorious officer of the United States’navy,
who was at the time on the coast of Cubs, arid
•we have now before us a letter cofirmiug the
glory of our friend, front another gentleman of
the navy, who was in Havana at the time -the
affair transpired. F rum the recollection of the
Statement of our friend, as well as from the let
ter, wo shall present to our readers a brief
account of the heart-sickeding story.
In the summer of 1824, several of the chi
tons of Havana missed many of their little
negro children, nnd the impression was gener
al that they had been kidnapped, and sent to
the plantations in tho interior. Tito attention
«f the police was callod to tho subject, but tlio
Sfigilaneo of the constituted authorities was not
table to effect a discovery,
■ sr. A little negro girl was sent by her mistress
to a cook-shop, at which were sold meat pies,
s Usages, &c, remarkable for their delicacy.
Tht! shop had no rival in tlio city—it was pa-
„ tronized by all classes of people—fronts tho
govornor down to tho soldier.
The alarm was given on'finding tho little girl
did not return in duo time—she was uncoil to
tlio shop alluded to—and somo gentlemen who
lind seen hor enter, deposed that sho had not
come out. A guard was drilorotl to soarch tho
shop, und hopes wore entertained that a nest of
kidnappers was about to be discovered. In
searching tho lihttsc, a trapdoor was found,
. through which the party decended into n long
end gloomy vault, strowod with human bones.
In this subterranean Golgotha, a miserable old
aggro was discovered chained to a post, nnd
employed in chopping, with rlcvers the flesh
of tlio unfortunate girl, preparatory to its being
sorved up in pastry, which hud acquired for
tlio shop so distinguished a reputation. The
old man stated, that be had been confined, nml
thus employed for throe years, in which time
many of his fellow creatures had passed through
his hands. Tho shop kcepors wore arrested,
tried, nnd four of them executed—a fifth con
demned to perpetual imprisonment.
