"TO THE MAID I LOVE BEST."
Tone—The meting 0/the tculert.
There is nothing so soothing to heart or to mind,
As the smiles of affection from the maid I love dear,
As the charms of her beaut v and sweetness combined.
And the promise she’s made me, “all this I shall share."
Why then should I languish in doubt or in fear,
Or w hy “If I hare not a friend" should I care,
If the dear little girl that I love from my heart,
Has promised so fuithful, “from me she'll not part."
Then away with dull care I'll be pensive no more,
Well pleased, in herprosenco, her charms I’ll adore,
And when from herdwellingof peace, I depart—
May angels of heaven, their blessings impart,
And shield and protect the “dear maid of my heart."

Cbm. Porter was at New Orloans a short
time since, xvlicro preparations were making
to give him n public dinner. It is asserted
in sonic of the Virginia papers, that the A-

Maj. Lain*.—The President of the French
Academy of Sciences, at a late silting, stated
that the rep.ort of tho death of this enterprising
traveller, was unfounded. Information had
been received from the English Consul at Tri-
S oli, stating that Capt. Clnppcrton and Major
.uing had mot at Tombuctuo, and wero living
there quietly. It does not appear by what
channel ho received this intelligence.
Roanoke Wine.—In Virginia wine has
been made of a native grape, known in that part
of the country by the name of the Fox Grape.
Most other species come to maturity too early,
winch makes it necessary to express the juice
when the weather is hot, and the wine almost
unavoidably turns sour. The Roanoke grape,
however, is preferable even to the Fox grape,
as it is larger, more fruitful, aud of a superior
flavor.
It h is been imported from tho north eas
tern part of North 'Carolina, and grows spon
taneously on Roanoko Island. Tho vine is
hardy, long lived, and produces abundantly,
even at an advanced age. It probably will
last fifty or sixty yoars, or even much longer.
In the district whore it is roared, tho vine is
Sever pruned, and cattlo aro permitted to have
access to them. Tho leaves are smooth, ir
blossoms in Juno; the fruit is round, whito and
«wcor, and suited for tho tabic as well as tho
wine press. It is thought it will vio with tho
finest grapes of France and Spain—Indeed
tbnso acquainted with it speak of the flavor of
tiie wine as peculiar, and different from that
of any odier wine.
Tlio Roanoko grapo ripens the Inst of Sep.
ternber or tho first of October. A single acre,
wi ll managed, would yield four or five hun
died gallons of wiuc. It is thought that it
would flourish in the western and middle states
where it would probably become ripe lata in
October, or early in November—a season most
favorable to making wine. Tho wino has be-
S n to rise fast into importance, and cuttings of
0 vino can bo obtained in any quantity by
thoso disposed to cultivate it. A merchant in
Virginia has lately received ordors for fourtcon
barrels of Roanoko wine from n little town in
Kentucky.—Almost any soil might bo made
congenial to this grape, by tho addition of
light manure.

The correctness and accuracy exhibited by the Pu
pils in their different Studies, far surpassed the san
guine expectations of the Trustees end a very respec
table Audience. The display of their advancement in
Science afforded ahighlyplcosing gratification. From
the present prosperous success of this Institution, the
long experience, and high standing of the Rector as a
critical Linguist and Mathematician, the Trustees
cherish a confidence that this Seminary may justly
claim a share of public patronage. The next Session
will commence on Mo'udny the 23d inst. under tire di

A. M. and the Female Department under his Daughter,
Miss 8ksanna S. Rhea. The healthiness of Fayette
