THE LOVES OF THE NIGGERS.
BREACH OF PROMISE OF MARRIAGE.
NEW rALTZ, ULSTER COUNTY, UNITED STABS,
Phillis shooiunaker v. Cuff Uogeboom.
This was an action fora breach of the. mar.
riagu promises tried before Squire De Witt,
Justice of the Peace and Quorum. The par
ties, as their names indicate, are black, or, as
philanthopists would say, coloured folk. Cou'nw
seller Van Schaick appealed on behalf of tho
lady. He recapitulated the many verdict*
which had been given ofiate in favor of injur,
ed inocence, much to the honor aud gallantry
of an American Jury. It was time to" put an
end to theso faithless professions, urfhese cpld.
hearted delusions; it was timo to put a curb
upon the false tongues and false hearts of pre
tended lovers, who, with honied accents, only
wooed to ruin, and only professed to deceive.
The worthy Counsellor trusted that uo irijuti-
ous impressions would he made on the minds
ol" the Jury by the colour of his client.
"’TU not a set of features, *
This tincture of the skin, that wc admire,"
Sho was black, it svas true; so was the honor
ed wifo of Moses, tho most illustrious and in
spired of prophets. Othello, the celebrated
Moor of Venice, and the Victorious general of
hor armies, was black, yet the lovely Desde-
mona saw “Othello’s vissago in his mind.”-—
In modern times wo may quote his sable Ala-,
jesty of Hayti^ or,' sinco that country has Be
come a republic, the valiant Boyer. He could
olso refer to Rliio, King ot the Sandwich Isl-
an S op copper- coloured Queen and Mauanje
Fob/, so hospitally received and fed to death
by their colleague the King of England- 1 —nay,
the Counsellor was well advised that the bravfit
General Sucro,'the hero of the Ayacucho, was
a dark mulatto. What, tlion, is cologr in. esti
mating the griefs of a forsaken aud ill-treated
femaleT—She was poor, it is true, and in am
hurnblc sphere of life; but love levels all di»»
tincrions; the blind god was ho judge, and no
respecter of colours; bis darts penetrated deep,
not skin deep; his client though black, was
flesh and blood, uud passed affections, passions,
resentments, and sensibilities; and in this case,
